Just out of curiosity what do you think the most predictable "Subversive" cliche out there is?

Like the twist that is so common that it isn't even a twist at this point but is still treated like one?

I think the "Armor is actually hiding a woman" subversion is up there, like, if you're watching anything now and there is a mysterious character in a pile of semi masculine armor I think it's safe betting that it's actually a woman.

Subversive and degenerate films such as KIDS, Happiness, Gummo, Pink Flamingos, Possession purposefully aren’t available streaming anywhere. How does this effect the future of art?

Film is the greatest medium of art in our time in my opinion. Pieces of art deemed problematic or offensive are not being hosted on any streaming services, including rental options like Prime or YouTube, making these type of films extremely hard to see in our current media consumption landscape.

In the absence of physical media, which is becoming more and more rare, these movies are essentially being banned by the companies responsible for curating our intake of contemporary art. As physical media becomes less commonly manufactured and printings of these films grow in age and rarity they will become prohibitively expensive to purchase. If no digital streaming options exist they will become next to impossible for people to see in the future if that does not change.

How does this effect the overall culture if art is sterilized of its inherent obscene qualities? If a young person interested in art in 20, 30 years is unable to reasonably see important works of offensive, degenerate art then they could be less inclined to take those risks in their own work. Imagine if Egon Schiele had never seen Klimt, and a whole generation of expressionist portrait artists had never seen Schiele’s work. Which was nearly the case, after being arrested his work was burned and everything we see of his is after that period and presumably somewhat sterilized for fear of reprisal of the law. Would we still have grotesque art being created like Jordan Wolfson or Sally Mann.

Will the linear progression of filth and trash remain intact? Or will it become recontextualized and appropriated into a sterilized and safe form like pop-punk, which allows a socially acceptable amount of grit and self expression while remaining consumer friendly and profit focused.

Art has a long history of serious censorship and this is obviously a lesser example compared to the Nazi degenerate art exhibitions, video-nasties, the various satanic panics, but it’s the beginning of a trend I’m concerned about growing worse as our media moves more and more out of the physical space and into the digital curated subscription model.

In 2050 will I be able to stream Cannibal Holocaust or Julian Donky-Boy in

The Endwalker Cinematic trailer is probably the most accurate and subversive of all the cinematic trailers [Spoiler: 6.0, technically all?]

One of the things I really liked was how events in the cinematic trailer were fairly close to what happened in-game, including the majority of the spoken lines from the characters.

This is the opposite of the other trailers where instead they show events that don't happen at all or are very misleading. As hype has Heavensward's was, you never fight alongside other Dragoons save The Azure Dragoon himself. You never really even see other Dragoons, which is a shame because I thought it would have been really cool to see.

Stormblood sort of counts, although there's not a lot of events shown in it. The first half is never shown in-game, even though it sets it up, so we can assume that's supposed to be how it happens. The second scene though doesn't happen at all, as it was just supposed to show us the new area and that it's under control by Garlemald. And your character looks so different as a Monk and Samurai, I've seen many trailer reaction videos where people just don't pick up that you're supposed to be both characters and many think that Monk was someone new to the story.

Then there's Shadowbringers, arguably the best trailer until Endwalker. The fight with Zenos is another inaccurate representation, and you definitely can't change jobs mid-battle as badass as the fight with the Sin Eater is. But I think misleading most of all, is the implication of the trailer that you will use the power of darkness in your fight against the light. This never happens as your time as the Warrior of Darkness, and you're only ever called that because of your stand up to the light.

During Endwalker's trailer, most of the events shown are very close to the events in-game, but misleading in the way the fight with Zenos was misleading, done more to make it look cooler. Sure Alphie wasn't part of Alisae's fight, and I LOVE how it's actually Gra-ha Tia who stands in. Yes, we're all present during the Forum presentation, and yes Estinien and Vtra's moment is more dramatic in the trailer. I do love how, for the longest time, we were trying to figure out what Estinien says, and it ends up being the name of the dragon itself. Well done. But what impressed me with how accurate everything was, was that almost every line said by a character ends up in the game somehow. Once I heard a couple, I began looking forward to every other moment.

What really impresses me though, is that the trailer leads us to believe that it's Zenos and Fandaniel setting up the final days, only to have

"The Subversive Genius of Extremely Slow Email" - The Atlantic's article about a new 'Slow Messenger' called Pony Messenger

\"Pony is a messenger that delivers once a day\"

>Every day, the mail still comes. My postal carrier drives her proud van onto the street and then climbs each stoop by foot. The service remains essential, but not as a communications channel. I receive ads and bills, mostly, and the occasional newspaper clipping from my mom. For talking to people, I use email and text and social networking. The mail is a ritual but also a relic.
>
>That relic is also the model for a new personal-communication app called Pony Messenger. Think of it as email, if email arrived by post: You compose a message and put it in an outbox; once a day (you can choose morning, afternoon, or evening β€œpickups”), Pony picks up your outbound dispatches and delivers your inbounds. That’s it. It’s postal-service cosplay. It’s slow email.

The article on The Atlantic is well written and even mentions SLOWLY and other slow tech apps and services.

>Ben Grosser created the Minus social network, on which you can post only 100 times. Other technologies of unhurriedness include Dialup (a surprise-phone-call app), Slowly (a pen-pal service), and Mail Goggles (a Gmail add-in to prevent email regret).

Once a day, Pony picks up any outgoing email, and delivers any new incoming ones

And I thought it interesting, worth a mention here in our sub.

Pony Messenger for example allows some niceties I am still waiting to see (maybe) in our SLOWLY platform. Like some Rich Text formatting. They show in-line images for example - images inserted in the middle of the message's text, which can make them more relevant.

How the British state came to see Militant as a subversive threat

https://www.marxist.com/how-mi5-came-to-see-militant-as-a-subversive-threat.htm

Using a recent study published about the inner workings of the British state with regard to the Militant tendency in Britain, this article explores how the Militant began to be regarded as a real threat to the state, and the measures taken to undermine it, including listening in on meetings with a toilet bucket.

>β€œWe crept in, into the little cubby hole at 8 o’clock in the morning with a bucket to cater for our needs, and we stayed there until all the delegates had left, after nearly 7 o’clock at night, and we recorded the proceedings on a small, Swiss high tech tape recorder provided by MI5 for us … We were that near to people standing at the back of the hall and just the width of a small, thin wooden partition, looking through a peep hole.”
