[TOMT][TV show] Mid 90's American after school special -Punk Teen boy with mohawk befriends girl with disability (uses crutches), teaches her horseback riding

In this early to mid-nineties North American after school special type show, a punk teenage boy who wears a leather jacket, with a dark colored mohawk befriends a young girl with a disability that causes her to walk with crutches. I can't remember why they become friends, but I think it has to do with community service on the boy's part. I think he'd been in trouble for something; he's a misunderstood loner.

During the course of the show takes her horseback riding for the first time. At the end he presents her with a cabbage patch doll who has crutches just like hers. The moral of a the story is you can't judge a book by its cover, and even the most different looking people can be friends. Very, very cheesy.

Does anyone remember this? I've googled this to death. I have no recollection of what channel it was on.

CMV: Grade schools in the U.S. should teach more American history after the 1950s

I think that the American History curriculum in grade schools, especially at the high school level, spends way too much time on the colonial period or the Civil War and not enough on the country’s history post-1950. I feel like this emphasis is a way to constantly remind everyone about the Founding Fathers or the history between the North and South, and to never paint the US in a bad light, which I find to be a form of censorship.

This thought was prompted by a conversation I had with five other people who grew up in FL, VA, PA, and HI about what we remembered from our American History class in high school. Some of us took AP US History, while others took non-AP equivalents, and we all graduated different high schools between 2009-2014. Several of the topics we all agreed that we learned very little about include: the Vietnam War, Korean War, Iran-Contra, the long history of US involvement in South America, Puerto Rico becoming a territory – all issues that either make the US look bad or are connected to ongoing geopolitical tensions today.

I don’t know how history classes have changed over the last 5-10 years. But I remember repeatedly learning the Civil War or Roosevelt’s presidency throughout elementary and high school. I think we, Americans, would gain a better appreciation for other cultures and better understand why the federal government is involved (economically or politically) with certain countries if we learned more about β€˜modern’ American History in school (and not relying on the Internet) at a younger age. Thoughts?
