Had this discussion with my girlfriend. Seems like everyone here in Texas knows who she is and can probably sing her music. Is this true outside of Texas, or not as much? I know there is that J Lo movie, but Iβm also not sure of its popularity.
Specifically, Iβm asking about the dialects of the descendants of hispanos (Spanish speakers who have been living in what is now the USA since prior to the Mexican-American War), not the dialects of more recent immigrant communities.
One of the few mainstream country musicians to occasionally sing Tejano styled music is Dwight Yoakum. In my teenaged years, I came up listening to Tejano and conjunto music. Later I listened to musicians like Freddie Fender, Selena, Flaco Jiminez and Los Lobos in South Texas, especially down around Corpus Christi, Kingsville, Raymondville, Crystal City, Harlingen and Port Isabel. I never really embraced Tejano until I was an adult though. I like conjunto better than Tejano.
