"NZ Wars: Stories of Tainui is the next compelling chapter in RNZβs award-winning documentary project on the New Zealand Wars.
The 1863 invasion of the Waikato was the defining conflict of New Zealand, reinforcing the Crownβs power, entrenching one of Aotearoaβs oldest political institutions (the Kiingitanga) and resulting in land confiscations that continue to shape New Zealand today.
Once again, Great Southern Television and Aotearoa Media Collective bring this important chapter of our nationβs story to life, teaming up with RNZ to create a digital documentary project that vividly illustrates how these battles looked, sounded and felt.
Presented by Mihingaarangi Forbes and featuring Dr Vincent OβMalley alongside esteemed iwi historians Rahui Papa, Brad Totorewa, Tom Roa, Mamae Takerei and Kawhia Muraahi, NZ Wars: Stories of Tainui examines the events that continue to influence contemporary Aotearoa.
Forbes says βthe Waikato wars or as Waikato historian Mamae Takerei describes it βthe war on the people of Waikatoβ changed the relationship between Paakehaa and Maaori forever.βΒ Centred on three key encounters; Rangiriri, Rangiaaowhia and Ooraakau NZ Wars: Stories of Tainui is a bicultural retelling of βthe biggest and most important campaign of the 19th century New Zealand Warsβ.Β The documentary recaps the events which led to the invasion of the Waikato and examines its consequences for future generations of New Zealanders.
Producer Mahanga Pihama says the documentary features βHeart breaking stories that are told by the descendants that will forever remain a part of New Zealandβs history.βΒ Using dramatic re-enactments, interviews, historical records, haka and digital storytelling the project brings to life the first-hand narratives of tangata whenua and tangata tiriti which have been passed down through the generations.
In 2020 the last instalment of the series NZ Wars: Stories of Waitara won Te Maangai Paaho Best Maaori Programme at the NZTV Awards.

"Tainui iwi will this weekend mark the anniversary of the start of the 1863 Waikato Invasion by celebrating 157 years of resistance.
Te PΕ«take o te Riri organiser Brad Totorewa says the focus will be Rangiriri PΔ, where 500 Kiingitanga warriors were overwhelmed by 1400 heavily armed British soldiers.
He says against all odds, the people of the area survived to fight again.
That was the message the MΔori King Pootatau Te Wherowhero sent to Governor Grey.
"'You can send your cows down to us Governor Grey to drink up all our waterways, but my people come from a wellspring deep in the earth. We will not dry up.' What we believe he was saying was that against all odds to survive - the latest artillery of the time in 1863, cannons, hand grenades - (against) our taonga MΔori, our hand weapons, our double barrelled guns, we survived," Mr Totorewa says.
Brad Totorewa says the iwi is also celebrating a $3 million grant from the Provincial Growth Fund to restore trenches used on the site for education purposes, and also its purchase of a 12 hectare block behind the pΔΒ which formed an escape path after the battle."
Te PΕ«take o te Riri Day - 28th Oct which began commemorating the Coloniser NZ Wars Mass Invasions in 2017 was affected by Covid19 and is overcoming intergenerational racism and ignorance.

On September of 2018, a chartered plane dropped Glenn Field and his three german shepherds at Rolfe Lake in Northwest Territories, Canada. The 62 year old man arrived there for camping. In April of 2019, another pilot reported seeing him while flying over the area. The location of the lake in a remote area with no road access might explain the pilot's or the investigators' certainty about the identity of the man. This sighting is the last known one.
In October of 2019, an aerial search of the area was performed and the RCMP visited his campsite to find the wooden tent poles on the ground, suggesting that Field had packed. His campsite seemed orderly and there was no evidence of foul play. His canoe, tent, supplies dogs were missing and RCMP believes that Field wanted to either move the campsite or to go back to Yellowknife, the capital and the biggest city in Northwest Territories.
Some Prince George Citizen newspaper claims that Field could be in Prince George, British Columbia. I failed to find any public evidence or official statements to corroborate this, and it seems based on the fact that this man had ties to the place.
Theories
I assume that flight records were the first thing RCMP looked into, and if Field is assumed to have gone missing in Rolfe Lake that's because there is no evidence of him boarding a plane. Field could have made it to Yellowknife by hiking around 23 miles or 37 km to the Great Slave Lake and canoed from there for 143 miles or 230 km. If that had been the man's plan, he wouldn't have left his tent poles behind as such a long trip would have required camping for several nights. The most likely explanation is that he moved his tent to the new site leaving the poles behind because there was not enough space in his canoe, but the his idea was to come back for them later. Somewhere along the way, Field got attacked by an animal, drowned, got incapacitated or perished due to natural causes, but his remains, his dogs and his belongings haven't been spotted yet because this area is very rarely visited.

"An adjustment payment has been made to Waikato-Tainui and NgΔi Tahu under the relativity mechanisms in their 1995 and 1997 Treaty of Waitangi settlements.
The mechanism ensures Waikato Tainuiβs share of the overall treaty settlement process remains at 17 percent and NgΔi Tahu at 16.1 percent.
Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Andrew Little says the latest payments of 2.7 million and $2.6 million respectively mostly relate to the resolution of some disputes concerning the first relativity mechanism payments made in 2012."
