I will like to create something like this in 3D:
I was thinking the other day about how if I went back in time to, say, medieval Europe/Africa/Asia and gave them just the detailed explanation and schematics for building a nuclear reactor, they wouldn't be able to do jack diddly with that information because there are all these pre-requisite technologies and expertise that would be required before they could start splitting the atom. And in all likelihood, there would be pre-requisite technologies and expertise to those pre-requisites. Like, you need specialized tools to manufacture the nuclear rods and containment, as well as specialized tools to manufacture those tools, and so on and so on (obviously, I'm no nuclear physicist).
And it had me thinking, an STC that tells you how to create something is useless if you don't have the pre-requisite knowledge and equipment to build that. So what if, a complete STC, or what we think is a complete STC, is actually an STC of knowledge. By which I mean, it's an AI-powered database that can assess where your society's current technological level is at and it provides you with the next steps to reach the level of scientific understanding Golden Age Humanity was able to achieve.
After all, if true AI could do just about everything better than humans, why not being able to better educate humans as well? Even if your scientific methodology is rooted in mysticism like how the Ad Mech's system is, an AI would be able to work within those parameters to create educational materials to take you to the next level.
So maybe, a complete STC like a database of everything humans had invented isn't really what the Ad Mech are actually likely to find, bit instead an intelligent library that changes the information it contains to suit the people who access it?
I'm trying to get a better idea of the day-to-day workings of a scientific illustrator and I'm curious to know if there is much scope for remote working?
And if so, how easy is it to travel while working as a scientific illustrator? I see that most work is done digitally, so are desktops strictly necessary or can the work be done on a laptop for example?
Looking for an artist that draws in a 1950s/Mid Century illustration style for a personal tiki bar matchbook Iβd like to create. Iβm a graphic designer myself so no need for anything elaborate as I can do most of the other work, just canβt draw to save my life. Just the simple black line work will do.
At least with title, authors, subjects/keywords and year of pub - if also some other scientometric data (citations etc.) - that would be awesome.
Thanks!
Hello- my first ever reddit post. I'm looking to learn about how to become a scientific illustrator. Been drawing all my life and working as a scientist for 15+ years. What I'm really lost about is whether I need any formal "graphic design" training to be taken seriously, where do I start with what to put in a portfolio. and how do I actually get people to pay me to help them share their science?
You know, the normal questions!
I saved a few boxes of magazines for my grandpa's garage when he cleaned out. It contained a mostly complete collection of scientific American from the late 50s until the early 2000s. I am very sure that all of these are scanned in somewhere or at least in library collections, so I was going to cut them up, save the cool articles and frame the iconic ads, then toss the rest.
Does anyone else have any better ideas before I ultimately destroy these? I don't think there's too much of a need to scan these in.
I have been a scientific illustrator for the past 7 years and I really want to round out my skills with a masters in marine ecology (or marine bio). I want to be able to participate in more research, expand my knowledge and just be generally more qualified. Currently I have a degree in fine art and a graduate certificate in scientific illustration. I have a fair amount of marine science experience under my belt from working with researchers/ at research stations, but know I will need to take pre requisite classes to be considered for programs. I have started learning r, which seems to be a valuable skill in ecology. What pre reqs will I need? Where can I take individual courses to fulfill the requirements? Any other advice? I know I have my work cut out for me going after a masters in science with a BA.
