If Spanish liberals in 1936 were as anti gun as American liberals in 2021, there wouldn't have been a Spanish civil war.
Fascists in the military would have just taken over the country immediately. Yes, the Republicans ultimately lost. But armed militias were critical to stopping the coup and the only reason they got a civil war in the first place. Had they been as anti gun, the Republic would have just folded with little to no resistance.
The idea that there are liberals in this country that believe a fascist takeover is coming, yet they are vehemently anti gun is just puzzling to me. The assumption that most of the military will be on the "right" side is also wishful thinking at best.
In our current state, we would be completely screwed if this actually happened. I believe the fascist know this as well....
Wheeler is known for having served as a general in the Confederate States Army in the American Civil War, and as a general in the US Army during the Spanish–American War. At Las Guasimas, in the excitement of battle, he called out "Let's go, boys! We've got the damn Yankees on the run again!"
Wanted to post this on Memorial Day, but forgot: A website that profiles (nearly) all professional or otherwise notable baseball players who died serving in the US military. Goes as far back, I believe, as the Spanish-American War. Please take a moment to check it out.

Commissioned in 1890, USS Vesuvius was the first and only U.S. ship outfitted with dynamite guns. Vesuvius’ three pneumatic guns could fire 550-lb high explosive shells at targets a mile away and were used during the Spanish-American War in 1898 to bombard enemy emplacements in Cuba. [3465x1824]

At the end of the Spanish-American War, the Teller Amendment demanded that the U.S. would give Cuba its independence. The Platt Amendment; however, was passed as part of the Cuban constitution. This gave Guantanamo Bay to the United States as a permanent military base. [2048x1124]

Every American war ends up having a memorial built. What do you think the memorial to the war on terror should be?

The Spanish-American War (May 14, 1828-January 17, 1830) | Pax Francia?
Note: For Spanish names, I am not including accents in this post. Sorry.
Prelude
The Spanish have long mismanaged their colonies, placing the local population far below them in strict social hierarchies. They also tried their best to make their colonies economically dependent on the motherland, not even letting them trade amongst themselves. Their only goal when colonizing was to squeeze the colonies for as much money as possible.
The Spanish Viceroyalty of New Spain. The United States is represented in blue. Borders are approximate
The empire kept a tight grasp over colonies until famed general Felix Maria Calleja del Rey was made Viceroy of the northernmost Viceroyalty of New Spain in 1815. As Viceroy, Calleja started to fix many of the issues that had been plaguing the colony in the past few years, such as a large debt and an outdated army. However, he would also be the most cruel Viceroy of the colony yet, ruling like a dictator mad with power, tolerating multiple human rights abuses committed by his commanders. When a rebel by the name of Miguel Higaldo rose up in rebellion in 1820, Calleja crushed the rebellion, executed Higaldo and his commanders, and exiled most of his supporters to Cuba.

However, that was not the end of problems in the colony. Next, an insurgent by the name of Jose Maria Morelos would lead a group of resistance fighters in southern Mexico. Calleja tried sending Colonel Augustin de Iturbide to deal with the rebels, but because of the effort of rebel Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Guerrero, switched sides to become one of the leading leaders in the rebellion. Soon, rebellions broke out all across the viceroyalty.
Calleja would be replaced in 1822 by Juan Ruiz de Apocada. Apocada offered the rebels amnesty if they stood down, but it would be too little too late. The Spanish responded to these problems in New Spain by sending in more troops to secure the colony.

The other viceroyalties south of New Spain heard about the rebellions happening there, and local leader
