Is it worth it to try to drive from Tacoma to Seattle right now or is it still too unsafe?

I work 40 miles away from home and tried to go in yesterday, but my car kept sliding at every intersection and stop sign. I didn't feel safe driving more than 2 miles and there's no flat exit out of Tacoma for the most part. I don't have any snow driving experience and no snow tires (can't afford them).

However my job told us we're expected to be in today no matter what since staffing is already low due to the holidays and a lot of us missed work yesterday. I'm really nervous about the conditions of the road but I also can't afford to lose my job.

Would it be worth it to drive that distance without snow tires? I'm not sure how icy it is right now on the main roads.

Would you rather buy a house in Tacoma or a condo in Seattle?

Currently in the market for a starter home. I can't afford Seattle single family homes-- which means I have to look elsewhere... or stay in the city and live in a condo.

I work in Seattle and realize the commute may take me an hour-ish during rush hour if I buy in Tacoma. But that also means I get to have a front/back yard.

Folks of Seattle-- what would you rather have?

Edit: So consensus say the commute is the worst part about choosing Tacoma. Just for clarification, I'll be in a "hybrid" schedule... meaning I will probably go in the office 2 or 3 (maximum) times a week and the rest will be WFH. Also, some of you have a clear dislike for Tacoma as a city.... why?

Edit: thank you for the overwhelming response and feedback!! I’m sure many people are in a similar situation as I am. Lots of very useful anecdotes here from many people. Thank you all.

β€œDon’t Seattle My Tacoma” will Seattle our Tacoma

Hey it’s the rambly guy and I’m expecting lots of heat for this but I can’t help but be just absolutely floored by the irony of what this phrase represents. Here’s the main crux of the β€œmovement”:

β€œβ€¦More significant, at least 20% of neighborhoods will be rezoned to allow for β€œMid-scale” development. This would mean 3 and 4 story apartment buildings could be built right next to small, modest homes anywhere in a neighborhood zoned Mid-scale. If enacted, Mid-scale Zoning could transform the affected communities. Larger buildings will shade out yards and homes and eliminate privacy. Neighborhoods will become noisier and more congested. There will be loss of open space and tree canopy. Apartment buildings will gradually replace the existing homes.” (taken from the website)

One thing that really rubs me the wrong way is the sheer amount of fearmongering, they espouse so many complaints about β€œparking, activity, crime, noise, the atmosphere, gEnTrIfiCaTiOn, etc.” yet it sounds next to completely baseless almost completely due to the fact that these proposals are based on Transit Corridors, aka the whole point is walkability and proximity to large arterial streets like 6th or 19th, not some home on N 23rd and Alder or whatever. The whole point is to promote activity for local businesses due to foot traffic on already important streets. Also gentrification is mainly a result of not enough lower income housing options for those in lower classes which tends to disproportionately include POC and limiting the amount of housing available only serves to worsen the issue.

Another thing that rubs very wrong with me is the almost purposeful lack of info and transparency because the concerns I’ve heard and read address the problem of β€œlarge 6 story apartments are going to go up near my quiet home and will soon come to yours! how are we allowing this! Our neighborhood will be never the same again!” When in reality, these Multi Family homes are only going up, as stated before, on arterial streets and neighborhoods that have already pre established density such as 6th Ave, N Pacific, Lincoln and (sorry) Proctor and a few more. Thing about these areas is that they never would be the jewels of Tacoma if they were developed the way this organization advocates, delaying and denying density in either housing (small scale apartments and close together homes) or businesses (physical density and lack of parking that promotes walking). I posted a map [here](https://www.re

I'm trying to find women's clothing stores between Seattle and Tacoma where the clothing is made in Washington (or at least the US)

My partner is looking to upgrade her wardrobe and we're trying to locate clothing stores where the articles are made within Washington state or at least within the US.

We're really trying to be ethics/environment conscious while clothing shopping so it's ideally second hand stuff or domestically crafted. We want support local folks who are trying to run a business where we can. Second hand stores are pretty easy to find, but locating shops that focus on their own house made stuff has proven difficult.

Etsy used to be good for this, but it seems like it has really been overrun with dubious clothing shops these days.

Any recommendations for locally crafted clothing between Seattle and Tacoma are much appreciated!

Public library job market in Tacoma/Seattle, WA area, or further north?

Hi everyone! This is my first post here. 😁

I am currently working in a Canadian public library as a circulation services assistant (though we are moving towards public service model). I am thinking about moving to Washington to be with a partner, but wondering what the public library job market is like. I am applying to an online MLIS just because I've heard in the past that the MLIS is important to work in the US, and our Canadian info tech diploma certificates don't really mean anything there. And yes, I am Canadian. Any thoughts? Is this viable? Are assistant position wages livable? Is the MLIS worth it, assuming I get in?

Thank you so much all!

Being child free in the Pacific North West (Seattle-Tacoma) is a way of life. It's the norm not the exception.

Around here people congratulate each other for being child free. It might be because the majority of the population has a very progressive and open minded outlook on the world. There's not a lot of religious beliefs that influence the communities. However there are kids here there are families here and there are religious communities here but on such a smaller scale than the rest of the country. I highly recommend being child free in the Pacific Northwest.

Where to try Steelcase around Seattle / Tacoma?

So, the title says most of it.

I'm actually over in Kitsap, so Tacoma would be easier, but making the trip into Seattle is practical for a once or twice thing.

But the only Steelcase dealer in the area isn't letting people try chairs during the pandemic, and I'm at a bit of a loss where else to try before I buy.

I'm mostly interested in the Steelcase Gesture, but I'm definitely interested in trying others chairs by other brands if there's a place or two in the area to try them out.

Current Minneapolis resident and this is a stereotype here too - that a Minnesotan will happily give you directions but never invite you over for dinner.

Maybe it’s like that everywhere?

What’s your take on making friends in Tacoma area especially as someone in late 30s.

Edit: I am not suggesting people need to literally invite someone over for dinner as we are still full swing in pandemic, it is just an example.

Reviews/thoughts after Tacoma & Seattle shows

I was lucky enough to get to both the Tacoma and Seattle shows last week. Want to share some thoughts about the shows as well as the band in general.

Venues:

  • The Tacoma show was in a relatively small space in an unbelievably strange building. I have spent a lot of time and seen a lot of shows in Tacoma over the years but never at this place. It's a hotel/brewery/concert space with multiple bars/restaurants spread out over 6-8 floors. You could shoot a remake of The Shining in this place and it would be believable. It was also hot as shit.
  • Three nights later they played the best venue in all of Seattle (imo), The Moore Theater. The Moore is where Eddie hung from the rafters in this video. It's an absolute palace and it seemed to take band's breath away (maybe even intimidate?) for the first few minutes of the show.
  • The contrast between the two venues was crazy. Tacoma was the definition of a concert hall. No seats, small stage and outside of the stage completely flat. I would guess the place held 600-700 people. The Moore on the other hand has three levels and is crazy steep. It holds about 1800 and I think Tyler mentioned they sold the place out. Which is amazing for this "little band" we all love so much.

Sets

  • I was a bit disappointed that the sets for both shows was exactly the same. I completely understand the reasons for this (more on this below) but still removed some of the mystery and ability to be surprised by what song was coming next. This is a minor complaint as they killed it both nights.
  • Opening with Neon Medusa is such a ballsy choice. But also the right choice. Probably the hardest song of the night but still danceable. It immediately set the tone of the evening.
  • The highlight for me at both shows was The Years. I used to vacillate between a few different tunes when considering my favorite Midnight songs but that debate is over. The Years is a god damned masterpiece. Live it is an epic, almost U2 in their prime song. I think Royce and his playing style has a lot to do with this. This was also Tyler's best vocal each night. The breakdown that closes the song was super emotional for me. I haven't seen a live show for nearly two years and the final two minutes of that song totally overwhelmed me. This is cued up to those two minutes from the Portland show. Still giving me goosebumps.
  • I like Dance with Somebody but the Bon Jovi tube thing Tyl
