[EVENT] The 39th Amendment To The Constitution: Reform of Seanad Éireann

In 2013 the government of Enda Kenny attemoted to abolish Seanad Éireann due to widely known issues in the unelected upper house. The referendum on the issue however rendered a "No" vote and the movement to abolish lost steam. Now under pressure from the Greens Leo Varadkar has consented to a referendum on reform of Seanad Éireann instead of outright abolition. The propose 39th amendment to the constitution would keep the upper house at 60 seats but would make it fully and completely elected. The reformed Seanad Éireann would also gain some powers so that it is merely not a rubber stamp to the government of the day, this includes allowing the Seanad Éireann to vote down bills which would automatically send them back to the Dail, appropriation bills however will remain the sole prerogative of the Dail, Seanad Éireann may only approve, reject or defer them. In practice under the amendment, most legislation (except for private member's bills) in the Oireachtas is initiated by the Government, which has control over the lower house. It will then be passed to the Senate, which has the opportunity to amend the bill pass or reject it. Elections to Seanad Éireann would use two round system as seen in France. The 26 counties of the republic will be apportioned 2 seats in Seanad Éireann, the remaining 8 will be elected by the students of the University of Dublin, and the National University of Ireland with each university getting 4 of the 8 seats. Finally the provision is added to add seats for Northern Ireland post unification. Finally procedurally the term of a member of Seanad Éireann will be three years with no term limits, the President can dissolve Seanad Éireann early or dissolve both houses for a simultaneous election if significant disagreement exists.

The bill easily passed the Dail though there was a battle in Seanad Éireann which refused to take up the bill proposing its reform. Despite this it passed Seanad Éireann and now will go to the Irish people for a referendum, the referendum will take place on November 12th if passed the changes will go into effect immediately and elections to the reformed Seanad Éireann will take place on December 1st of this year with the first joint sitting of the reformed Oireachtas set for December 4th.

Fine Gael, the Greens, andd Fianna Fail have stated they will support Yes, as will Sinn Fein. Labour has indicated they will take no position. The only party supporting no is Aontú

[EVENT] Referendum On The 39th Amendment And First Elections To Seanad Éireann

After a campaign where there was little opposition the people of Ireland went to the polls to consider the 39th Amendment to the constitution of the Republic which would make Seanad Éireann an elected upper house, the Fine Gael-Green-Fianna Fail coalition government proposed the amendment which up to now has faced no opposition from any of the main political parties. Voters lined up on a bright clear day to make their voices heard, turnout was good and a clear result was expected. Polls closed and the results came in

To reform the Seanad, the upper house of the Oireachtas

  • Yes: 1,429,981 (66.4%)

  • No: 723,632 (33.6%)

The result was an overwhelming Yes victory and the end of the unelected upper house. The Taoiseach thanked supporters of the amendment and formally advised the President to after signing the amendment into law dissolve the current unelected upper house and call the first election of the upper house. The President agreed

A few weeks later voters went to the polls in Ireland again to elect the first democratically elected Seanad Éireann in Irish history. Sinn Fein and Fine Gael lead opinion polls for Seanad Éireann as they do for the Dail and many expect them to be the largest parties respectively, on polling day another clear day polls closed and the Irish people elected their Senators.

The First elections to Seanad Éireann

  • Sinn Fein: 24 Seats

  • Fine Gael: 14 seats

  • Fianna Fail: 10 seats

  • Green: 6 Seats

  • Independents: 6 Seats

The result was a shock, sinn fein won a plurality of seats in Seanad Éireann by over 10 over Fine Gael. Luckily for the government Fine gael, fianna fail and the greens along with one of the independents were able to form a majority caucus in Seanad Éireann but the Sinn Fein victory was still a shock to many in the political pundit league. Soon after polls for the dail gave Sinn Fein an 8 point lead in lower house polling which pollsters say is likely fueled by the recent row with England. Mary Lou McDonald has stated the result shows the people of Ireland want change and theta they want Sinn Fein to provide it

>##Fórsaí Cosanta Announces Military Expansion, Modernization and Reorganization Program

>By Cherryl Macauley

>In a press release this morning, following Independent confirmation that the Act For The Continued Defence of Ireland passed the Dáil and Seanad, Minister of Defence Edward O'Gorman stated that the Óglaigh na hÉireann (Irish Defence Forces) is now undergoing a decade-long period of expansion, modernization, and reorganization, "in order to provide a better defensive front in these tumultuous times, as the face of both the Republic and the League of Armed Neutrality." In the release, the Minister laid a startling amount of details regarding the Greater Defence Program, of which the publicized document (released by the Fórsaí Cosanta shortly after the press statement) can be found below.

>>#ÓÉ Greater Defence Program

>>It is the goal of the Greater Defence Program to create an expanded, better-equipped, better-trained and better-organized military capable of defending Ireland and its friends capably, even in the face of much larger military structures. In this plan, we shall dictate, put forth by the Minister of Defence and the Directors of an tArm, an tAerchór and an tSeirbhís Chabhlaigh (the Army, the Air Corps, and the Naval Service), the non-exact manner in which this shall be done. Our friends in the Holy Kingdom are being contacted for possible funding and advisory on these issues. This process is expected to take some time, at the longest seven years.

[ELECTION] It's Raining Somewhere Else

[ref]

The 2025 election is underway, and we're truly in a strange time. The EU is having a tough go of it right now, with members leaving, getting kicked out, or falling apart at the seams. A major part of political discussion in Ireland at the moment is the "what if?". Should the Union fall apart completely, Ireland, which has strictly benefitted from the Eurozone, will likely see an unprecedented economic recession. Politicians are currently in debate as to deal with the Union at the moment, with the Sinn Féin demanding a more specific stance on the goings-on of the Union, breaking Ireland's historic neutrality, while the current majority party, the Fianna Fáil, is pressing for greater Irish independent markets. The Fianna Fáil's policies have seen some success already, but it's extremely unlikely that it would be enough to ensure Ireland does not collapse into poverty. Political analysts worry that these encroaching "binary issues" will morph the country into a two-party state, destroying Ireland's historic multi-party system.

Below, you'll find a list of parties in the running, alongside their current stances on issues relevant at the moment. Below that, a list of Presidential candidates. As President Higgins has served his second term, he is no longer eligible, and his stance as an independent has left a bit of a scramble for the parties to take the position.

Party Current Seats (Dáil Éireann) Current Seats (Seanad Éireann) Polling Percentage Taoiseach Candidate Issues Notes
Sinn Féin 37 4 26% Samhain McAlbain Reunification (Nationalist-ish), Anti-neutrality, Referendum supports. The Sinn Féin has grown in support slightly, as the Fine Gael falls out of favour.
Fianna Fáil 37 20 25% Kacper O'Connor "Isolationism", Economic independence, Neutrality Fianna Fáil have grown in support slightly, as the Fine Gael falls out of favour.
Fine Gael 35 15 15% Eric O'Brian Nationalism, Christian-Gaelic values, Neutrality As Irish politics moves away from Catholicism, the Fine Gael has fallen in popularity significantly.
Green Party 12 4 8% Michele Coghlan Green energy, Economic (energy) independence As many Green Party policies [are being fulfilled](https://www.reddit.com/r/worldpowers/comments/ks21n6

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

>##Ireland To Adopt New National Anthem and Flag Amid Unification

>By Caleb McLafferty

>With full Unification of the Emerald Isle well on the path, with Northern Ireland now officially part of the Republic, many politicians in the Republic have been left wondering "What's next?", as all-island Nationalism has been the major driving force of Irish politics for over a century now. With their goals now attained, the Sinn Féin, Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the newly-christened Lámh Dhearg have done but one thing: celebrate the now Unified Ireland.

>In light of the Isle Unified under one government, Taoiseach McAlbain and Uachtarán McAlbain have announced a "change in the face" of Ireland, creating a new national flag and changing the national anthem. The new flag, pictured here, shows the Isle with the Presidential Flag of Ireland imbed, on a "Celtic Green" field, representing that Ireland is now wholly the master of its own destiny, controlled by Irish people. The anthem is to be "A Nation Once Again", a song created during the years leading to the original Easter Rising, with the intent of leading the Irish people in song and rebellion against the English, representing not the current Republic, but the ideal Ireland that the men d
