A list of puns related to "Sci Fi Lullabies"
Long time nerd, first time dad, here. I was hopping I could get some suggestions of things to (badly) sing to my daughter with some amount of sci-fi significance.
I'm absolutely cool with in-universe songs, or stuff that is franchise exclusive, but I need lyrically driven pieces in English over instrumental pieces: Duel of the Fates is somewhat outside the scope, here. Don't really care how dark the franchise is, but I need PG lyrics that won't get me banned from the pediatrician's waiting room or what have you.
So far, I have Daisy Bell (IBM 7042/HAL 9000) and Fly Me To The Moon (Evangelion/Bayonetta). Whatcha got?
It occurred to me as I was listening to Sci Fi Lullabies the other day (for the millionth time) that the entirety of Disc 2 is comprised of B-Sides from Coming Up singles. Itβs pretty much another album unto itself, from the same era, so Iβve come to think of it as βComing Downβ.
A human soul and a mechanical body were never meant to be combined, but he was desperate. Through ash and storm, he preserved, his body barely holding together. Even as the world collapsed around him he never left his post. If he waited long enough, he could be there when she woke up.

In the movie since people couldn't have children, pets seem to have become more important. There's so many little details in background that shows how much more important pets have become in this childless world. In the very first shot of the film is an older woman holding her dog inside a coffeeshop as if it were a child instead of leaving it outside. Then there's a business that exists entirely to sell clothes for cats, there's an advertisement for a spring season collection of dog clothes, etc..... It just goes to show you how meticulously planned everything in this movie was.
As someone who really got into 40k 2-3 years ago at around age 20, I was wondering what really drew me into the whole franchise. And what made me a huge fan of the Imperium of Man and how it operates. I found it weird that I oddly liked a faction that was by all means, horrifying, tyrannical and oppressive. Why did I enjoy and become so invested in such a faction that would usually be seen as a villain? And then I compared it to several other franchises that I have seen and played such as Halo, Mass Effect, the Resistance games, Independence Day, Transformers, Marvel/DC shows that involved aliens invasions and more and then it sorta clicked with me.
We were not the victims this time. We were the opposite, we were the aggressors now. The invaders. The oppressors. The exterminators. The villains(even though we are the protagonists in 40k I guess). And we are extremely more unreasonable and crazy compared to the other sci-fi human counterparts.
In franchises like Halo, Mass Effect and Independence Day we are usually seen as being invaded, outclassed, outgunned and being destroyed by aliens who have too many advantages against us. We are always being laid low in so many franchises and usually have to take the path of the underdog to beat the aliens in some unconventional manner. Furthermore, we would usually be seen as the calculating, science digging and inquisitive type that tries to reason and figure out why the aliens are attacking us through reasons and facts.
The Imperium of Man is the opposite. We've destroyed and exterminated both hostile and innocent aliens. We control the entire galaxy, we have the superior firepower and tech. And most of all, we are fucking unreasonable. We all became religious zealots who focus on faith as enough reason to burn worlds asunder all in the name of a dead God. Other sci-fi humans would try to find a way to make peace with aliens, come up with a reason for why they are attacking us, trying to redeem them or try to go for the "we can co-exist with the aliens they are just misunderstood". The Imperium of Man says "No, the time for understanding has long passed. The Emperor has deemed your existence unworthy and we shall carry out his will to remove such unworthiness".
And I love it, its a nice different take on how humanity would act in space. Instead of being the usual level headed, good guy peacemakers who either get invaded by every other aliens or just trying to make friends, we do the oppsite. And thats sort of r

>!Is it just me or did the last episode include a pretty big Easter Egg?? Look at all the names of the Marines who were in the Ring station assault:!<
>!I laughed so hard I needed to rewind 2-3 times :)!<
List of Marines participating in the Ring Station assault to take out the rail guns there...
That is to mean you watched it but in the end you felt it was such a waste of time? Movie or show.
Of course the bigger question is, if it was so bad why did you keep watching. If we are talking shows, thatβs a big time commitment on something you ultimately donβt like.
Well Iβm here because Iβm salty. I just finished watching Invasion on AppleTV+. Itβs odd because I liked the concept and some of the plot lines and the slow start. However Galway through I began to not like my of the characters, and the pacing was terrible. And maybe my eye was more critical after the first half but the charactersβ actions, reactions, dialogue are terrible and not at all believable.
I will say the alien design and concept was pretty cool.
In short, is it just because spinning rings look cool on screen, or is there some theoretical basis in science that gyroscopes would be important to future tech (beyond their current-day usage and purpose)?
Oye, fellow inyalowdas,
It's definitely one of those shows that despite the quality of the production and writing, only a fraction of people I know have watched it. I've watched the weekly episodes on the air date since season 1.
I didn't get on board The Wire train until 2010 and now I rewatch it every couple of years and I plan to do the same with The Expanse.
We all obviously think it's amazing otherwise we wouldn't be here but the fan base is going to grow and grow when the 6th season is finished.
I wish I could erase my memory of it so I could watch again for the 1st time.
I'm confident it will become known as not just the greatest sci-fi show of all time but one of the best television shows ever. Easily in my top 10, probably top 5 too.
Taki for listening
Oyedeng.
I like sci fi, what I've seen in shows and movies. The Fifth Element is one of my favourite films. But the closest I've really gotten to reading a sci fi book was an alien smut romance. I'm sorry.
If none of the books listed are what you would recommend to an absolute sci fi beginner, please feel free to suggest other books, I can almost definitely get them from my library. But I was gifted these books over Christmas after mentioning in passing I'd like to get into the genre, and I'm feeling slightly overwhelmed.
If it helps, a few things I enjoy in the books I read are strong friendships, morally grey characters, romance, coming of age stories, and a few things I'm less fond of are super political-centric stories (a little is fine, I just don't like the ENTIRE story to be about politics), long and detailed battle scenes, and gratuitous descriptions about women. I'm not a prude, I just don't like when the shape of a breast is described for no plot furthering reason lol.
Anyway, thanks in advance! I'm excited to start reading.
edit: THANK YOU so much to everyone who has taken the time to comment, I just woke up and couldn't believe how many people had been so helpful. I was a bit intimidated posting in this sub, the only book sub I'm active in is the romancebooks sub and that place is a cesspool of toxicity and this has been an incredibly pleasant surprise. Thank you all for being so welcoming as well!
My opinion? Earth: Final Conflict, followed closely by Andromeda. They play these shows 40 hours a week on the Canadian Sci-Fi channel and it is a disgrace
For me its Mal Reynolds. That ship was always falling apart, most of the time they didn't get along, they were always broke and they were always getting shot at. But he kept them together. He made sure to put the crew before anything else.
Edit: thank you all so much for the suggestions! You guys are awesome!
