Presidency of Henry M. "Scoop" Jackson (1963 - 1965)

As Scoop Jackson took office on that tragic day in November of 63, he didn't know what was going to happen. The Highest of Highs and the Lowest of Lows would mark his Presidency - and he would leave the office unpopular on the left and far-right for different reasons. But he would maintain the respect of his colleagues and most of the American people.

Cabinet -

  • Secretary of State - J. William Fulbright (1963 - 1964) + Robert McNamara (1964 - 1964) + William Bundy (1964 - 1965)
  • Secretary of Treasury - C. Douglas Dillon (1963 - 1965)
  • Secretary of Defense - Robert McNamara (1963 - 1964) + McGeorge Bundy (1964 - 1965)
  • Attorney General - Robert F. Kennedy (1964 - 1964) + Nicholas Katzenbach (1964 - 1965)
  • Ambassador to the UN - Adlai Stevenson (1963 - 1964) + Dean Rusk (1964 - 1965)

President Jackson's Cabinet would reflect the turbulent state of his Presidency. After the "March Massacre", Secretary Fulbright and Ambassador Stevenson would resign both replaced by hawks McNamara and Rusk. NS Advisor McGeorge Bundy would take over as SecDef - despite his academic background. When Bob Kennedy resigned to run for President, his Deputy AG - Nicholas Katzenback who was loyal to Scoop became AG. However, the most crushing loss was the resignation of Bob McNamara - who had been Scoop's "loyal" Cabinet member on Vietnam. Now, with his resignation to be RFK's VP Candidate (and eventually VP) - Scoop was crushed. Both on a personal level since he sincerely trusted McNamara and on an advisory level knowing that his Cabinet was now firmly 2nd rate. Undersecretary of State William P. Bundy replaced McNamara.

Voting Rights -

  • Jackson's priority was shepherding the Voting Rights bill out of the House and into the history books. Kennedy's assassination helped provide public momentum for Voting Rights. In the House, the bill would be sent to Rules Committee after the Winter Recess. However, the Rules Commit. was run by Segregationist Byrd Machine stalwart Howard Smith. However, Emanuel Celler (Judiciary Commit. Chair) filed a petition to discharge. At first, the petition seemed doom as many Reps (despite their support of Voting Rights) were skeptical to interfere with the ways of the House. But, public opinion in the North helped propel public support and it became clear that the petition was gonna receive the necessary signatures. Thus, after the Winter Recess, Smith, hoping to avoid embarrassment. On February 10th, 1964 the bill passed in a House vote. T

1964 Democratic Primaries -

I will do the 1964 Democratic Primaries (which are more complicated than you would expect), then do the Presidency based on the Results and stuff from November 22 to the 1964 Election.

Scoop Jackson -

Scoop Jackson, 36th President of the United States

Henry M. Jackson, known by everyone as "Scoop" has had an eventful Presidency since that faithful day when JFK was shot. After much MUCH hard work, the Voting Rights Act passed Congress on February 10, 1964. Jackson focused his attention on getting the Economic Oppurtunity Act of 1964 passed. Thanks to his and Senator Johnson's efforts, the bill did end up passing. The bill created many Government Agencies such as the OEO, VISTA, Job Corps, CAP, and a few others. The OEO (which was the crown jewel of the act) was run by Kennedy in-law and Director of the Peace Corps Sargent Shriver. "Scoop" has a big domestic agenda planned if he got a 2nd Term in his "A Better Future". However, for now - another issue lingers. Vietnam. In late February after the VRA passed, Scoop sent an extra 20,000 "advisors" into Vietnam. Scoop also began sending US Ships into areas around the Vietnamese coast to have a powerplay against the Vietnamese and talk of the bombers getting into action began with Scoop beginning it. What happened instead was something far more dramatic. The former moves caused Secretary of State J. William Fulbright, Undersecretary of State George W. Ball both resigned, and UN Ambassador Adlai Stevenson all resigned. This was called the March Massacre in the press (somewhat like Mac's Night of the Long Knives). The New Cabinet changes would lead to the hawks dominating the Cabinet. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara became the new Secretary of State, National Security Advisor McGeorge Bundy became Secretary of Defense, Assistant Secretary of State William Bundy became Undersecretary of State Bundy and the President of the Rockefeller Foundation, Dean Rusk became Ambassador to the UN. Anyway, back to the incident. Soon After, Robert Kennedy announced his In two days, it was widely reported that North Vietnamese attacked the USS Maddox (though, curiously didn't attempt to damage the ship). Anyhow, Scoop Jackson asked for and got a "Gulf of Tonkin Resolution" giving the President a wide array of powers in Vietnam. Most of Scoop's Advisors, even the technocrat Bundy expected

So, I did lie in the title. I have not chosen impeached presidents, nor have I chosen any Confederate soldiers, or pro-slavery politicians from the Civil War Era. I also removed Nixon as a possible as he resigned.

Here are all of the Presidents of the United States, if the losing candidate won:

George Washington, Independent, of Virginia. Elected 1788-89. VP John Adams. *

George Clinton, Democratic-Republican, of New York. Elected 1792.VP George Washington.

Thomas Jefferson, Democratic-Republican, of Virginia. Elected 1796. VP Aaron Burr.

John Adams, Federalist, of Massachusetts. Elected 1800. VP Charles Cotesworth Pinckney.

Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, Federalist, of South Carolina. Elected 1804. VP Rufus King. (Serves 2 terms)

DeWitt Clinton, Democratic-Republican, of New York. Elected 1812. VP Jared Ingersoll.

Rufus King, Federalist, of New York. Elected 1816. VP John Eager Howard.

James Monroe, Democratic-Republican, of Virginia. Elected 1820. VP Daniel D. Thompkins.*

Andrew Jackson, Democratic-Republican, of Tennessee. Elected 1824. VP John Caldwell Calhoun.

John Quincy Adams, National Republican, of Massachusetts. Elected 1828. VP Richard Rush.

Henry Clay Sr., National Republican, of Kentucky. Elected in 1832. VP John Sergeant.

William Henry Harrison, Whig, of Ohio. Elected in 1836. VP Francis Granger.

John Charles Fremont, Republican, of California. Elected in 1856. VP William Lewis Dayton.

Abraham Lincoln, Republican, of Illinois. Elected in 1860. VP Hannibal Hamlin.** (Served 2 terms, 5 years. With Schuyler Colfax being VP in 1864 & acting president until 1868, and Lincoln from National Union from 1864.)

List of all possible US Senators

Taken from the localisation file "TNO_USA_senator_names_l_english.yml"

Interesting things I observed:

  1. Most states have a total of 12 possible senators, 2 for each party (RD-R, RD-D, NPP-L, NPP-C, NPP-FR, NPP-Y). But since some possible senators can become presidents (e.g. Gus Hall) or join a president’s cabinet (e.g. Russell B. Long), there are 5 states who have 14 possible senators (Arizona, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, and Mississippi) and 18 states with 13 possible senators (Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Washington).

  2. This may or may not be a bug, but following senators appear multiples times:

  • Lement Harris – possible NPP (L) senator for both Georgia and South Dakota
  • Claude Lightfoot – possible NPP (L) senator for both Arkansas and Kentucky
  • Delmer Berg – possible NPP (L) senator for both Arizona and California
  • Edwin Westphal – possible NPP (Y) senator for both Alabama and Kansas
  • Eustace Mullins – possible NPP (Y) senator for both New York and Virginia
  • James Abourezk – possible senator for South Dakota for both the Republican and Democratic parties
  • Cecil Andrus – possible senator for Idaho for both the Republican and NPP (C) parties

Clearly, the National Progressive Party has mastered the art of cloning.

  1. The longest name is β€œBenjamin Franklin Dillingham II,” a possible NPP (FR) senator from Hawaii; the most common first name is β€œJohn” (41 instances), followed by James (22 instances) and β€œCharles” (14).

  2. There are 22 β€œJr.”s, 3 β€œSr.”s, 3 β€œII”s, 2 β€œIII”s, and 1 β€œIV.”

  3. 3 senators have nicknames: BolesΕ‚aw β€˜Bill’ Gebert (Oregon, NPP-L), O. β€˜Abe’ Murdock Jr. (Utah, RD-R), and W. A. β€˜Tough Tony’ Boyle (Montana, NPP-C).

EDIT: 6) Just noticed the awesome father-son combo of Prescott β€œThe Business Plot” Bush as RD-R from Connecticut and George H. W. β€œTreason And War Crimes” Bush as RD-D from Texas.

Anyway, on to the list of names:

Party State Name
Republican Alabama Richmond Flowers Sr.
Republican Alabama John H. Buchanan Jr.
Democrat Alabama Carl Atwood Elliott
Democrat Alabama Howell Heflin
National Progressive Party (Left) Alabama Harry Haywood

How to drop Eagleton in the McGovern 1972 mod

This mod is not out yet. I wanted to note that upfront so I didn't get a million comments asking where the mod is.

However, I wanted to make this short guide instructing people on how to replace Thomas Eagleton with Sargent Shriver as McGovern's running mate, as he did in real life, since there's a bit of a trick to it, and it's not super straightforward. I intend to get McGovern's side out this Friday, as a tentative release date. It's been coming along really well and I'm close to finished with that side. Think of this post as a bit of a preview. When I release the mod however, I'm going to link this so that people understand how to drop Eagleton if they want to. You will be able to keep him on the ticket, drop him, or just choose someone else from the get-go.

  1. Select Thomas Eagleton as your running mate, and then answer the first 14 questions as you normally would.

Here's one of the questions as a preview.

  1. On question #15 however, if you want to drop Eagleton, and ONLY if you want to drop Eagleton, enter the McGovern/Shriver code (this code will be linked in my main mod release post) before selecting the answer. To do this, right-click on your mouse, open "inspect element", and enter the Shriver code into the space that says "console". As a sidenote: if you want to keep Eagleton on your ticket, just pick any of the other 3 answers to question #15 and ignore this guide. You won't have to enter any other code.

This is what the mod looks like without entering any Shriver code.

This is how the mod now looks before I selected my answer and after I entered my code.

  1. Now you'll select the answer that begins with "Senator Eagleton is just too big of a liability at this point." If you select any other answer with Shriver, this won't work, and the advisor message will tell you to start over.

Feedback when you drop Eagleton after successfully following the steps above.

  1. That's it. Play through the remaining questions normally, t
