ffmpeg Video Enconding on a Raspberry Pi OS 32bit

Hello everybody,

I am new on the Rpi world and after a few attempts I installed the RPI OS 32bit on a RPI 4 B, i'm using it in a headless way as a media server. Its been a while that I don't use ffmpeg, so I forget almost everything about it. I found a few tutorials in the internet but I'm asking here because didn't found any talking about using it on a RPI OS 32bit. My goal is just to re-encode a few video files from more than 10GB to just 3 or 4 (it must me be h264). Can you give me a hand with this little project?

Thanks very much in advance!

When comparing to other Raspberry Pi OS Emulators, I can safely say the worst thing about Lakka...

Is the goddamn audio issue. You would think they would have a simple switch like Retropie does on the main menu, but nooo, you gotta make it even harder and use SSH to try to even force the OS to make it work on HDMI or AUX out. How the hell has it gone this long without fixing that?

Any issues with latest raspberry pi OS updates?

So, I've had my pihole for a few years now. Last night I did my raspberry pi OS updates and upon reboot, I got this notification in my pihole web interface:

" Ignoring query from non-local network "

With a bouncing warning sign, then all DNS queries started to fail.

So, I did what any normal person would do, I reinstalled my pi OS from scratch and also the pihole server from scratch. I had issues immediately upon install, the same ones. I got the warning again, and no queries were being responded to.

I have since got it to respond, by re-installing pihole, and I slowly added my network devices back to using the pihole for DNS, and they seem to be working, but again, I got the same warning:

"Ignoring query from non-local network"

This gives me pause. Does anyone have any insight? I've literally never seen this warning in my multiple years using pihole.

Thanks

Best distro coming from Raspberry Pi OS?

I first started using linux when I got my raspberry pi over a year ago now, so the OS I'm most familiar with is Raspbbery Pi OS (Or Raspbian OS). I'm looking into now moving on from Windows on my main laptop and have been trying to find a suitable candidate, I tried Linux Mint and I just feel a little... restricted (?). An internet search suggested Ubuntu but isn't Raspbian based on Debian?

So basically, what distro is best for someone largely familiar with RPi OS?

OpenMediaVault as OS for Raspberry PI but NOT NAS?

I have been considering running OMW on my Raspberry pi 4 as a OS NOT as a NAS (I already have 2 large synology NAS and have no use for another NAS). I have never used it before and I am also a huge noob when it comes to rp4. It seems to me that OMW configuration when it comes to things like backup is quite a lot easier and better then my current configuration of raspian os with docker.

My questions are following:

  1. Can I run OMW as an OS only? NOT as a NAS? Would it make sense to do so? I use my PI as a docker server and would like easier way to control this backup and such.

  2. If it would makes sense , can I install it on an USB SSD on my pi (128gb) ? and run it from that alone without any other drives except the in my NAS servers?

Thank you everyone in advance

Raspberry Pi OS (or the good name: Raspbian OS)

Which one is better?

Raspberry Pi OS with desktop

OR

Raspberry Pi OS with desktop and recommended software

  • Release date: October 30th 2021
  • Kernel version: 5.10
  • Size: 3,045MB

The latter seems like the epitome of bloat. If the basic one is 1.1GiG and the "recommended software" one is 3GiG then is it really worth it? I'm guessing it comes with pre installed text editors, termianls, browsers, and all the crap along with it.

Realistically,I know it in my bones that the basic 1.1GiG version is the one to go with, however I may be missing something.

Help to find Raspberry Pi Robot OS?

I'm currently trying to modify the living guts out of a Tomy Omni Jr, and everything is slowing down when it comes to software/OS

I just can't find a simple software/OS on Raspberry Pi that just opens up when the pi is powered on without the need for a mouse and keyboard and -

β€” allows the robot to do voice recognition

β€” allows custom voice responses based on faces it's currently seeing though a camera (Facial Recognition)

β€” allows you to take control of the pi/robot from a laptop (Bluetooth?) it's connected to and move it around manually

My best experience so far has been with installing Windows 10 on the pi and running ARC, to get a somewhat 'portable robot with voice recognition' (in that the pi is just sitting in the robot and setting ARC to start when windows starts up and opening the project for voice recognition) but it's a lot of work to install.

Trying to install the right libraries to get facial recognition working has been a nightmare on python pi OS for me, so if anyone knows of a 'Pi robot OS' that could be installed on an SD card please comment them below :)

I also want to control LEDs and screens connected to the pi using the code/OS too like eyes made from LEDs mouth led etc etc

*I am new to this, my coding skills are very, very small.

How can I allow for logging in via SSH with a password AND key file (Raspberry Pi OS)?

As the title says, Im looking to be able to log in with a password or a keyfile to my linux computer (a raspberry pi running the latest raspberry pi os (built on debian) in this case).

I want to be able to log in with visual studio code without all the password reprompts (which currently is only possible with a keyfile) but I also want to be able to log in via a password so I don't have to manage dealing with moving that keyfile everywhere, which is why I want the ability to log in with a password as well.

This won't be directly accessible through the internet (I plan to use Wire Guard and DDNS for that if I ever get around to that). It's just a convenience feature to make a process easy that's been bugging me for a while.

I know how to make the pi use either, but not either at the same time (which is different than both at the same time if you get what I mean). Switching between the 2 options, (not allowing for both at the same time) was all I was able to find through searching.

#EDIT:

#Solution:

So at least at the present time, you actually don't need to do anything at all.

All you have to do is not purposefully disable password authentication after enabling public key authentication.

Its based around changes like the following changes to /etc/ssh/sshd_config where you will need you to add

AuthorizedKeysFile %h/.ssh/authorized_keys

PubkeyAuthentication yes

The first sets your ssh configuration such that it searches the home folder of the user that needs to be authenticated (the %h) for the file in the corresponding path for public keys that it will match against.

The second enables public key authentication.

Do nothing else, and you'll be good to go.

Do note you should probably restart. If I remember correctly you don't need to fully restart the pi and just need to restart one service, but I just restarted the pi with a sudo reboot.

Thanks to /u/user_n0mad for their answer which sent me in the right direction, even though it turns out that unless specifically denied, password auth works by default.

Is there an AutoHotKey alternative for Raspberry Pi OS?

I re-arranged a few keys on my keyboard, so I run an AutoHotKey script on Windows to change what the keys used to be to what they are now. (My keyboard didn't have a PgUp/PgDn, so I switched two keys to be those.) I've just set up a Raspberry Pi OS system, so this system doesn't know the keys are different.

I could flash the firmware on the keyboard itself to make it permanent, buuuut if I do that, I could brick it if I do it wrong, so I don't really want to. AutoHotKey was a nice simple solution for when I was still messing around. I just wonder if there's a way to do something similar on Raspberry Pi OS, or if I can reprogram what the computer thinks certain keys are and go at it that way.

Will there be support for Raspberry pi 4 / Buster OS?

I just tried out about everything to get the steam link working on Raspberry pi4, but no luck. That makes sense because Steamlink is only supporting Raspbian Stretch, which Raspberry pi 4 is not supporting.Steam doc

Raspberry pi 4 is now 64 bit and Stretch is built for 32 bit.

Is there any news about Steamlink supporting Raspberry pi 4/ Buster?

I tried to flash the latest Stretch from the official archive. I flashed the image on the sd card and inserted it into my Raspberry pi 4. When turning on the raspberry pi, OS is not booting. The screen is black and does not show any signal on the screen. LED lights on the raspberry are turned on.

I did have Raspbian Buster OS (latest version of Raspbian) before on the raspberry and it worked fine. (And works now fine)After a bit of googling, I found out that it is not possible to boot Strech out of the box on Raspberry pi 4.

Here it said steam link is only compatible with Raspberry pi 3 and Stretch.

On running google search about is it possible to run Stretch on Rpi4.

With the newest version of Raspberry Pi OS, there is some kind of issue happening with the graphics API needing to be updated for Steam link to work with the newest version bullseye.

It was also reported here by a user: https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?p=1942203&hilit=bullseye#p1942203

I don't know if Slouken or anyone from Valve is aware of this. I just wanted to pass it on that RPi more or less said that Valve needs to update it.

Can I run and setup raspberry pi OS + chat server completely virtually from my host for testing so I can then easily just transfer it to physical pi afterwards?

A few weeks ago I was trying to coordinate with another guy who has the pi and the sdcard and was giving them instructions to try and setup the pi to allow me ssh access.

We didn't get very far like this and it petered out since they are working full time and I think didn't want to be fiddling around with the details of it so the scent went dead on it for some weeks now and neither of us had brought it up when we had seen each other since.

They suggested at the time I take the pi and sdcard away and do it myself which is still an option but I wondered if I can set the whole thing up myself on an isolated vm ie do testing and setup all from my own machine without the physical devices then then if successful just do the final steps to put it onto the physical device.

I am just thinking this would be a good way to do things without having to have another false start, so I could just test things and get them going and only tell him about it if I had the working setup.

Not sure what would be involved here? Just running pi on a kvm vm on host? is that possible due to different architecture?

Also what about then moving it to the physical pi once it was setup was done on vm; what steps would be involved there?
