A list of puns related to "Queer ecology"
Looking for pivotal articles or books on Queer Ecology.
Hello all!
I just finished undergrad and now I'm pursuing a Phd in English. As an undergrad, a lot of my thinking/writing involved Affect Theory (thinkers like Sianne Ngai, Lauren Berlant, and the like), ecology, and contemporary literature (Whitehead's John Henry Days, for example).
What Phd programs are well-known for ecocriticism?
What programs are known for Affect Theory (other than U of Chicago)?
Do you know of any programs/scholars that join the two?
Basically, I'm just trying to familiarize myself with the grad school landscape... Any suggestions regarding my area(s) of interest would be of much help.
P.S. As someone who aspires to be a scholar, this community has been an amazing resource. So thanks to all you out there.
I'm not sure if this is the right sub to ask, but the results google offered me were a little too journalistic for me to get a good picture, and I'm currently hundreds of miles away from my campus library. Can anyone give me a plain and rough sketch of what the field is about, and possibly even why it should be of interest to us?
I thought for a bit that I wasn't going to make this post. I wanted to give no excuses for any anti-feminist sub to go after feminists, so I was going to drop it. But in the 24 hours since being banned from fourthwavewomen (after arguing about a now Reddit Site Wide banned member about their transphobia), I have spoken to 2 other people who were banned for the same reason within the last 24 hours, and WitchesvPatriarchy nearly banned me for even interacting there, because the hatred is so bad. I do not want other feminists seeking this sub out and dealing with this same issue.
While it is not my goal to tear down some other ideologies women in that sub have, it is their right to hold differing beliefs, I can not and will not tolerate transphobia on any level. No strain of feminism should exist that demonizes queer existence.

A third mod calling Mary Daly one of the most important feminists of all time: https://archive.ph/DgY5X
Some background on Mary Daly: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Daly#On_transgender_persons
> In Gyn/Ecology, Daly asserted her view of transgender persons, writing, "Today the Frankenstein phenomenon is omnipresent . . . in . . . phallocratic technology. . . . Transsexualism is an example of male surgical siring which invades the female world with substitutes." "Transsexualism, which Janice Raymond has shown to be essentially a male problem, is an attempt to change males into females, whereas in fact no male can assume female chromosomes and life history/experience." "The surgeons and hormone therapists of the transsexual kingdom . . . can be said to produce feminine persons. They cannot produce women."

So, yesterday, Les RΓ©publicains (LR), Franceβs mainstream conservative party, finally chose their candidate. As the final list of expected candidates is pretty much settled (although thereβs still time for surprises), and as things have become quite complicated, I think itβs late enough to do a writeup on the incoming French presidential elections, similar to what u/bazarov_21 did with the Japanese elections.
What is the role of the president of France?
France is the only country in Western Europe where the president is the most important and powerful person in the country. Other Western European countries are either parliamentary monarchies or parliamentary republics where the presidentβs role is mostly ceremonial and the head of government holds the executive power (Portugal is a special case I think, the president doesnβt hold the executive power but still has an important role).
Since 2000, the president of France is elected for five years and since 2007, he can only serve two consecutive terms, although itβs still legal to serve an unlimited number of non-consecutive terms.
The president holds the executive power. He promulgates the laws, chooses the Prime Minister, is the chief of the Armed Forces, is able to order the use of nuclear weapons, is able to dissolve the National Assembly (lower chamber), and is able to call a popular referendum if the Parliement agrees.
There are two houses in the French Parliament. The upper house, the Senate, is of lesser relevance and most of the time canβt have the last word. The lower house, the National Assembly, is the one that actually dictates of much actual power the president holds.
When the president has a majority in the Assembly, the president appoints whoever he likes as a Prime Minister and is free to choose how much power he delegates to him. Some βstrongβ presidents, such as Macron currently, choose a mere executor as their PM, and thus donβt get overshadowed, while some βweakβ presidents such as Hollande appoint a stronger PM and delegate him a significant part of the presidentβs prominence in French politics.
When the opposition has a majority in the Assembly, the president chooses a Prime Minister that satisfies said opposition, and the appointed PM becomes the de facto holder of the executive power. Theoretically, the president could st

Hello there :)
Some folk around here may know me as the arcology guy - that person who occasionally swoops into posts that ask questions about urban design or architecture and gushes about the potential of architecture+ecology (arcology \o/).
But I'm also an observer. I like to lurk and listen and learn.
I'll take a bit of a leap here and say that basically everyone has seen the Chobani Ad that went viral, and has led to the pretty huge boom in numbers for the sub and interest in Solarpunk in general. We went from about oh.. 43kish people to 66k in a small amount of time. And like myself, a lot of folk prefer to lurk, to upvote what they agree with and otherwise passively engage with the community unless something in particular catches their eye.
I hope this post is one of those things!
A fellow commenter u/CharlieNobody posted in one of the recent crypto threads about what they called Chobani Futurism and I had a bit of an epiphany. It really is an accurate description of what the ad demonstrates - it isn't Solarpunk in the sense of appealing to the ideals of Solarpunk, but it has a similar enough aesthetic that people here, ever craving to define what we are, latched on it as a perfect emulation of our collective ethos. And thus it spread until certain Twitter personalities caught wind of it, and well, here we are.
Of course, a cursory examination shows that it definitely doesn't, but the desire to see a living breathing world that looks close enough is strong, and I don't deny for a second that the ad is really amazingly beautiful. Often times I've seen people describe their ideal world as a "Ghibli meets X" world, and honestly that ad really does evoke some Ghibli style design work.
That said, no one can forget that the original (not brand-free one that went viral) ad had very clear product placement, using awkward examples of modern consumer products in a world designed to be fantastical and 'better'. This is the crux of Chobani Futurism. As a company, they're actually about as good as one can expect from a for-profit institution with relatively good morals for the society it exists in. Just like their ad, though, they're -still- predicated upon profit, and as good and as ethical as they try to be, in the end, they'll do what is needed to maintain profit share or fail and be replaced by something potentially worse. They're still that carton of milk in a world of robots and flying cars.
There are others who are far better at clarifying wh

... keep reading on reddit β‘A while back I got asked what I would do to fix things in the world post-MOASS, and this is my answer.
Note: this is not utopia building or a deep dive, this is very much triage for months 0-6. (And I am skipping so many things I want to see worked on here because of that.) But I also think it could do a lot of good fairly fast, and hopefully will help you with ideas for making your own plans.
Backing up: Hi! Iβm a former non-profit staff person with experience in habitat restoration projects and my Masters is in Public Administration. If you look at my profile youβll find posts Iβve been writing supporting things to do post-MOASS, from starting a non-profit, how to do non-profit DD, and how to make change now and post-MOASS and more. This is my last planned post in advance of MOASS. When the MOASS hits I expect to be back, likely in a supporting role for DD, but for right now honestly Iβm trying to wrap up my recovery so I can help out more later, and recovery takes a lot out of you. (And thanks to all of you whoβve sent supportive messages, itβs been really great when Iβve had bad health days!)
Back to the post!
First though, for all efforts I would recommend following a three prong strategy:
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
Do your worst!
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies π
It really does, I swear!
I suspect we're going to find out that this was all a misunderstanding. That the aliens were either passing by our planet or seeking refuge or some other benign purpose, and that either their hostility was due to individual action or because the "aliens" we saw were actually like wild animals, acting without intelligence much like the invasive ecology we see all over the place. The "Invasion" was of the same kind that people refer to when they describe migrants or refugees seeking to travel to richer countries for safety. I suspect we will find out that they were nuked just as they were trying to somehow make contact with humans.
Why do I think this? Thematic connection. Of the main characters, one is a (let's face it) racist soldier deployed to Afghanistan and treating all the people there as dirt until he meets one who can speak his language. And another set of main characters are muslim immigrants who have to deal with prejudice and racism from the whites in addition to their own internal family issues. Yet another main character is a queer woman living in conservative, homophobic Japan. Caspar and the bully even have a moment of understanding eachother, bridging a gap made by circumstamce and miscommunication and prejudice.
That seems to be the theme here: prejudice and lack of communication. The problems we see on screen are emotional, human, irrational and based in miscommunication. The aliens are more like set-dressing and I predict the narrative will use this cosmic event that's unfolding to parallel the way its human characters
