I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately and am curious to see what other Ex-Fundis have to say about their experience with purity rings.

Like most of us, I got minimal to no sex talk. I was simply given a purity ring when I turned 14 after an awkward car ride with my mom during which she described a penis as a “whackadoo.” Up until that point the discussion (or even mention of the word sex in any capacity) had been absolutely forbidden. Naturally, I was a bit traumatized by this experience. My mom’s delicate use of whackadoo would have been enough without throwing in a wedding-band-wannabe ring inscribed with “I will wait for my beloved” that I was now expected to proudly display on my ring finger. I told her that it made me uncomfortable, because, “what if people (god forbid boys) ask what it is or what it says?” And my mother—who in my 14 years of living never mentioned the word sex—had the audacity to say, “that would be a great opportunity for you to share with people about your beliefs and how you want to save sex for marriage!”

Let’s unpack this for just a minute.

You’re telling me that I was supposed to talk to random strangers about sex after going my entire life believing that such a thing was absolutely taboo. It took my mom 3 years after I started my period to work up the nerve to have this travesty of a sex talk, but she expected me to volunteer information about my beliefs on the topic to anyone and everyone who may ask. Why would a group that intentionally represses all sexual desires in young people then turn around and tell them to go use their purity rings and beliefs about sex as a catalyst for evangelism? Why not cut to the chase and hand out t-shirts with, “I’m a virgin—ask me why!”

I digress. After being bestowed with this token of purity, I begrudgingly wore it for the next year, wanting nothing more than to melt into the floor every time someone asked what my ring said. Luckily for me, the ring was a bit large and one day, as I washed my hands in the holy water (Chick-fil-A bathroom sink), I heard a “clink” and out of the corner of my eye saw the ring bounce away into the nearest stall. In a tiny act of rebellion, I decided to leave it there. And that’s how I lost my purity ring in a Chick-fil-A bathroom. Sometimes I wonder if anyone found it and what must have gone through their mind. Oddly enough my mom never asked where it went. Maybe she was scared.

I'm trying to find more artists with this style. I don't like most trap or rap. I do like dubstep and trap DnB elements.

I had a friend telling me that "purity rings" were fairly common in his town in Oklahoma and I was very intrigued by this. Purity rings are typically worn by females to remain "pure" until marriage. Anyways, how common is this in America and is it still prevalent?

I just got back from the Ogden, Utah show. It was my first time seeing them, and it was so amazing! One of my favorite concerts I’ve been to. They also debuted a brand new song. It just feels so good to finally go to a concert :)

Also, did you ever go on a purity trip or attend a purity ball?

One of my close TBM friends in high school was given a purity ring with a real stone by her dad, and it was super creepy.
