Solo travel to Pondicherry

Hello!

I am planning to visit Pondicherry during the first week of May and was wondering what can I expect. I'm mainly visiting to get a break from work. I'll be traveling solo and plan to stay in a home stay or a hostel. I selected Pondicherry because it seems like a quiet place and has a beach (I've never seen a beach before). Also I read somewhere the food is great as well :D Any suggestions for my stay and places to see are welcome.
