For the last two seasons, my brother Dondrick and I recorded a Challenge podcast and wrote weekly recaps here. We've stopped doing that show because there are plenty of other good podcasts out there, but we still wanted to weigh in on some season awards.
PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT of the YEAR
last season: Music Department
this season...
The show brought in a slew of new competitors this year, which usually lends itself to a weak season. I'd suggest that was indeed the case this year, but I wouldn't blame the casting department for that. In fact, the rookie crop had a lot of memorable new additions. Not only did we have top contenders like Emy, Emanuel, and Logan, but we had strong personalities like Ed (from the Circle), Berna, Gabo, Hughie, etc. The list goes on and on. The show lost some bite when they had to shed the Bear/Rogan problematic Brits, but they added some quality fresh blood to the mix.
If there was a problem with this rookie class it was that they were way too content to stand idly by and get picked off one by one like lambs. The first half of the season felt expected and lame as a result. That said, I'd blame that on the show format more so than the actual cast. They had a system that allowed vets to pick off rookies individually (from various teams), and that lent itself to a boring first few months.
ELIMINATION OF THE YEAR
last season: Fessy over Nelson in Hall Brawl
this season...
Usually we'd go with a headbanger between two top competitors like the Hall Brawl last year, but there weren't as many game-changing eliminations like that this time around.
So given that, we'll tap an underdog winner here with Hang in the Balance, a pair elimination that saw Cory and Bettina come from behind to beat couple Jeremiah and Amber. This elimination had some twists and turns and strategy involved, but also had long-run ramifications. Amber B. would have been a monster in a running/endurance final, and the women are lucky she got booted before that.
FIGHT OF THE YEAR
new category
More than any actual elimination, the fight between Fessy vs. Josh had the biggest ripple effect on the game. The Big Brother alliance looked poised to run the table before they imploded based on their own ego.
ROMANCE/SHOWMANCE of the YEAR
last season: Leroy + Kam
this season...
We had plenty of short-term hookups, and even some double-ups (Tori and Emanuel both had multiple nominations). But as last
