[Community Research] Peter Williamson (c. 1830s - c. 1870) [Week 5]

Congratulations /u/ljm7991! A German (or Dutch?)-American entry - and recent enough that there should be something to dig up! To the others who posted, feel free to re-enter your people in the Week 6 thread this Thursday.

From /u/ljm7991 :

  • Peter Williamson (might be Williams)

  • Birth

    • Holland/Germany (Year unknown. Potential dates based on his son's birth would be 1830 - 1845)
  • Marriage

    • Married to Mary Smith presumably in New York, USA before 1866
  • Death

    • I believe he died before or around 1870
  • Children

  • Summary/Notes

    • Unfortunately, most of the information I have on Peter comes from his son, Peter Francis Williamson
    • I believe Peter Williamson died when his sons were very young. My theory for this is as follows:
      • Peter's son, Peter F., was born in New York. However, I know that at some point in time the family moved to western Pennsylvania as Peter F. was married in Western PA and lived there for a number of years before moving to Eastern PA. Similarly, the other son, John H.'s obituary says for Ashland, PA newspapers to copy it. Because Peter was born in the USA in 1867 and John in 1865, they should appear on the US Census starting with the year 1870. Despite this, I have not found any census record for them until 1900, when he lived in PA. There are two census records, from 1870 and 1880, in Western PA, close to where the sons lived that could show my Brick wall's widow and other children. I believe these records have a medium chance of belonging to them because Peter F. is listed as being born in New York in ~1867 on the 1870 census, but John would've been born in 1857. On the 1880 census their father's birthplace as Holland while Peter's estimated birth year is still ~1867 and John's is now 1861. Holland is listed as Peter F.'s father's plac

Debate over Empty Ideas: Peter Unger responds to Timothy Williamson

Peter Unger recently shared some new remarks on Timothy Williamson's review of Empty Ideas.

As you may recall, the main point of Emtpy Ideas "is that analytic philosophy has offered next to nothing about the character of concrete reality, even nothing badly false in that regard, and that all of my distinctions and discussions are in service of that pretty obvious thought, and they may all be tossed aside, once the obvious is fully realized."

Not a fan of the view, Timothy Williamson replied here.

Peter Unger has written remarks that respond to Williamson's suggestion that emptiness is the same as necessity and sort out being concretely informative from being concretely substantial. Enjoy.

'Scream' (2022) Review Thread

Rotten Tomatoes

Critics Consensus: The fifth Scream finds the franchise working harder than ever to maintain its meta edge -- and succeeding surprisingly often.

Score Number of Reviews Average Rating
All Critics 80% 70 6.90/10
Top Critics 70% 23 6.60/10

Metacritic: 65 (28 Reviews)

Sample Reviews:

The new "Scream" may be the first horror movie that turns the mockery of fan service into its own fan service. Is it fun? Mostly, yes. - Owen Gleiberman, Variety

Seriously over-indulges in self-referential cleverness, to the point of undermining the actual scare factor. - David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

A horror movie, through and through. It's also a small-town drama. It's also a vicious and spot-on commentary about some of the more repugnant fads in the modern entertainment hellscape. It's also extremely funny. - William Bibbiani, TheWrap

Even afresh batchof newcomers can't keep the staleness from creeping in, although the new "Scream" nicely mines modern movie discourse in a way to justify its own existence. 2.5/4 - Brian Truitt, USA Today

The new "Scream" stabs and jabs at our memories of the original and creates some bloody fresh twists of its own. 3.5/4 - Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times

The new creative team effectively taps into a quarter century of real-world affinity from fans for some clever meta commentary within the film. 3/4 - Zaki Hasan, San Francisco Chronicle

It stumbles by the end - these movies always do - but by bringing itself full circle, it stands as the best "Scream" since the original. B- - Adam Graham, Detroit News

It does little but reference the previous films (this is the fifth in the franchise), but it does so in smart, fun ways. 3.5/5 - Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic

Over two hours, Cinco de Scream-o lumbers along with routine kills and few surprises even when it makes lame attempts at shocking us. 2/4 - Johnny Oleksinski, New York Post

I have to admit that there is some watchable gonzo humour to this fivequel (though I hid under my seat for the violent bits.) 3/5 - Peter Bradshaw, Guardian

The whole cast are game, bringing the same fresh-faced, cool kid energy that's been the common denominator of every past Scream star... And the film finds plenty of ways to deliver fresh and funny scares. 4/5 -

[Formula 1] The Quick and the Dead - the history of safety regulations in Formula 1

When Formula 1 was started back in 1950 there were essentially two rules: your engine needed to be naturally aspirated and under 2,5 litres in size. The safety equipment boiled down to the gentle suggestion of a leather helmet and whatever wild courage you could scrape together on the day. No seat belts, though.

In 2020 the mountains of safety regulations and improvement ensured the survival of French driver Romain Grosjean in a crash that many thought would cost the driver his life. Even though his car was ripped in two, his head got pushed through a barrier and the whole thing went up in flames, he survived with basically only burns on his hands. He started driving again less than a year later.

How did we get from A to B? A lot of dead drivers, one Flying Scot, a very persistent Professor of Neurology and a 7-kilo piece of titanium, but let’s untangle it.

But first off, a warning: I will be discussing quite graphic deaths and accidents, though not in detail. You should proceed with caution, depending on your comfort level. Any linked crashes are not shown to be exploitative, but to show the frankly quite horrid happenings in the history of the sport and also to contrast it with the safety standards we see nowadays.

And a major, major thank you to /u/trailrunninggirl for proofreading this post and giving some super helpful suggestions!!

What exactly is Formula 1?

Formula 1 is the highest level of single-seater car racing worldwide. Sanctioned by the Fédération International de l’Automobile (FIA), currently owned and run by Liberty Media, the sport hosts however many teams want to try their hand at building the best racing car in the world. It’s an engineering competition as much as a driving competition, with the teams constantly trying to figure out new wacky ways to make the cars drive better or quicker. A season is organized into a number of “Grand Prix” events, three-day spectacles that usually feature free practises, qualifying and a race that lasts about 1 and a half hours. A team features two drivers, with all of them competing for both the driver's and the constructors' championships.

Names you might know are Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren and Williams on the team side and Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, Ayrton Senna or Fernando Alonso (previous

The IDW as a Fandom -vs- The IDW as a Concept

After all this time, we still get people coming here thinking that the IDW is about simping for Peterson, Harris, Shapiro, and the Weinstein bros. I don't know if they're naive and impressionable kids or just groggy normies who haven't fully awoken from their lifelong slumber under blue pill tranquilization. But it's bizarre that so many seem to think that the IDW is about listening to and agreeing with the right people. I've made posts about this before, asking people about their opinions on who is in the orbit, as well as a few regarding political biases in the sub because that misconception is also a long-running problem here. Let's try and once again address this nonsense, shall we?

Here's a simple version of my take on this:

The IDW is about setting aside unhelpful tendencies like partisan tribalism and emotionalism, and remaining open to conversations which usually are either distorted by or outright disallowed by the "mainstream" narrative. It may involve particular people or groups but it's not about them as much as it's about the attitudes they embody regarding civil discourse. People often act as vectors of information but don't make the mistake of fixating on the person.

In the posts I linked above, I gave some elaboration on my view about so-called "members" and how these associations really work so I won't get into that here. But I am going to go ahead and offer up an update to the map of the network as it appears from my vantage point. For those of you who won't be bothered to read those other posts, I'll just rattle off a list of the major nodes:

Jonathan Haidt, Steven Pinker, Douglas Murray, Gad Saad, Lex Fridman, Jonathan Pageau, Joe Rogan, Coleman Hughes, Glenn Loury, John McWhorter, Noam Chomsky, Andrew Sullivan, Slavoj Zizek, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Michael Shermer, Thomas Sowell, Glenn Greenwald, Matt Taibbi, [Michael Malice](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5tj5QCpJK

The 16 Trump aides subpoenaed last week

#Bannon’s indictment

A federal grand jury indicted former Trump advisor Steve Bannon on Friday for failing to comply with a congressional subpoena. Charged with two counts of contempt of Congress (pdf), Bannon has turned himself in on Monday and will be arraigned tomorrow.

Bannon was issued a subpoena on Sept. 23, 2021, from the House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, seeking information regarding his involvement in the insurrection (pdf):

>The Select Committee has reason to believe that you have information relevant to understanding important activities that led to and informed the events at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. For example, you have been identified as present at the Willard Hotel on January 5, 2021, during an effort to persuade Members of Congress to block the certification of the election the next day, and in relation to other activities on January 6. You are also described as communicating with then-President Trump...urging him to plan for and focus his efforts on January 6. Moreover, you are quoted as stating, on January 5, 2021, that "[a]ll hell is going to break loose tomorrow." Accordingly, the Select Committee seeks both documents and your deposition testimony regarding these and multiple other matters that are within the scope of the Select Committee's inquiry.

Bannon defaulted on the October 7 deadline, claiming he would not comply with the subpoena because former President Donald Trump had claimed executive privilege over the records and testimony sought by the Committee. This was a flimsy excuse considering the fact that Bannon did not work for the federal government during the time frame in question. Executiv

[American Comics] Batgirls - How to split a fanbase, turn them on each other, and then re-unite them against yourself

Update (9/15/2021): Not every drama has a happy ending, but for Batgirls fans, they might have finally gotten what they wanted: the long-awaited Batgirls book, with the current writing team of Wonder Woman.

Superhero comics (most notably DC and Marvel, often known as "the Big 2") often have something called legacy heroes. Legacy heroes refer to characters who take on the mantle or superhero identity of another established character. One popular example is Miles Morales as Spider-Man who, depending on the continuity, is either a sidekick to Peter Parker Spider-Man or a post-humous replacement. Legacy heroes, to put it lightly, can be a difficult concept to execute effectively. Sometimes, the new hero isn't as popular with the fans as the old one. Sometimes, the new hero is more popular, and that upsets the writers (ahemGeoffJohnsahem) who grew up with the old hero. And sometimes, the new hero is an ethnic minority, and suddenly a bunch of Youtubers who have never talked about comics before are putting on their white hoods and chanting "they will not replace us".

Today, we'll cover how DC Comics handled the ever changing legacy mantle of Batgirl. And how they managed to divide a fanbase, pit fans against each other, and then re-unite them against a common enemy: DC.

The Divided States of Barbara

Let's start with Barbara Gordon, who is, for all intents and purposes, the OG Batgirl (yes, there was briefly a Bat-Girl who preceded her, originally created to dispel rumors of Batman and Robin being gay, but she was quickly shelved and is thus irrelevant here). Created in synergy with the 1966 Batman television show, Barbara was the daughter of Commissioner James Gordon. She was an independent and career-driven woman in her early 20s, and originally operated independently from Batman and Robin, though they did cross paths often. Thanks to a number of successful media adaptations (Batman '66, Batman: The Animated Series, The Batman, etc), she is seen by the general public as the most iconic (and only) Batgirl.

Barbara was a mainstay for DC Comics for about two decades, though she never had her own solo title. Instead, she appeared regularly in back-up features for DC's flagship title Detective Comics, and later in a team-up book with Robin titled Batman Family.

In 1988, however, things took a very sharp turn. In A

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

A History of Formula One Safety Regulations

When Formula 1 was started back in 1950 there were essentially two rules: your engine needed to be naturally aspirated and under 2,5 litres in size. The safety equipment boiled down to the gentle suggestion of a leather helmet and whatever wild courage you could scrape together on the day. No seat belts, though.

In 2020 the mountains of safety regulations and improvement ensured the survival of French driver Romain Grosjean in a crash that many thought would cost the driver his life. Even though his car was ripped in two, his head got pushed through a barrier and the whole thing went up in flames, he survived with his mos severe injury being severe burns on his hands. He started driving again less than a year later.

How did we get from A to B? A lot of dead drivers, one Flying Scot, a very persistent Professor of Neurosurgery and a 7-kilo piece of titanium, but let’s untangle it.

If this entire thing seems familiar to some of you, it was posted over on /r/HobbyDrama two weeks ago and is now reposted here in a shiny updated, corrected and aimed at F1 fans version with an okay from the mods and the encouragement from some folks from over there. It’s also been split into two parts for ease and length, part two will be posted tomorrow.

But for this audience it might need another disclaimer: this is by no means an all-encompassing write-up on safety in Formula One, it’s more aimed at summarizing the basic developments and highlighting the progress made. So if y’all have more facts and figures, please drop them in the comments! Also, some quotes might seem familiar if you’ve seen The Killer Years, I’ll be posting a full list of sources in a comment tomorrow.

‘Everything goes’

Formula 1 developed out of the European Championship of Grand Prix motorsport racing in the 1920s and 1930s and started pretty much directly after the war ended, with the first races in 1947 and the first full World Championship taking place in 1950. It was quite the hodgepodge operation with no real understanding of the dangers of motorsport, and it showed.

If you had a barrier, it [consisted of straw bales haphazardly placed at the side of the road](https://i.guim.co.uk/img/media/c967f10f55c486c1d81b184bf131c089fbd01bcd/0_0_5315_3543/master/5315.jpg?width=700&quality=85&auto=for

'Scream' Review Thread

[Community Research] Post Your People! [Week 51]

Last week's thread looked at Jacob Miller.

To those who weren't selected, feel free to repost your ancestor in this thread to be considered in this weeks drawing - or post a different one if you want!

This will be a community effort to focus on breaking down the brick walls of one person's ancestor.

"Post Your People" will be put up on Thursday, and I will select the "winner" for the research thread to be posted Saturday. The "winning" ancestor will be chosen by a random number generator and will receive their own post for us to work together on.

We can all hopefully learn from each other through this process. Feel free to post your tips, tricks, and strategies.

Please post ALL information that you know about your ancestor: links, screenshots, sources. We don't want to do work that you've already done. Feel free to include a short summary and/or what you're specifically looking to solve.

Records may be related to: birth/baptism, marriage, divorce, death, children, census, land, taxes, biographies, education, probate, etc. You can also link to Google Docs/Sheets. Don't think that any record is not important. Share it!

Please be sure to take a screenshot of any record that is on a paid site like Ancestry; you can use Imgur to upload it. Try to link to FamilySearch records if possible.

[Community Research] Richard Hart (c.1795-aft.1880) [Week 49]

Congratulations /u/RVATodd!

To the others who posted, feel free to re-enter your people in the Week 50 thread this Thursday.

From /u/RVATodd:

I am looking for any additional information about Richard Hart. All I have for Richard Hart is a marriage record, two census records, and the death record of one of his children. There are lots of records for people with the name "R Hart" or "Richard Hart", but unfortunately it has been challenging finding any that I am confident are the same person noted in the records below. I would love to have anything that provides evidence of:

(1) His life prior to his marriage to Jane A. McKinney in 1862.

(2) His life, death, and burial, after the 1880 census.

I created a WikiTree page for Richard that includes much of the same information I am providing in this comment.

Here is the specific information I do have:

His name is given as "R. Hart" (marriage record), "D. R. Hart" (1870 census), "Doctor R. Hart" (1880 census), and "Richard Hart" (death certificate of his son, David Columbus Hart).

His occupation was "MD" (1870 census) or "Retired Physician" (1880 census).

Richard was born about 1795 in Kentucky (1870 and 1880 censuses). The death certificate of his son, David Columbus Hart, indicates that he was born in Indiana (which is just across the Ohio River from Kentucky, so this does not feel like an anomaly).

Richard married Jane A. McKinney on 7 Nov 1862 in Mitchell County, North Carolina.

In the 1870 census, Richard and Jane lived near Bakersville, Mitchell, North Carolina. His occupation was "MD". Also in the household were their two children, "Doctor" (given name is David Columbus Hart) and "Julia".

In the 1880 census, Richard, Jane, and their two children continued living near Bakersville, Mitchell, North Carolina. His occupation was "Retired Physician". The census indicates his parents were both born in Maryland.

Here are links to the various records I mention above:

Marriage record - FamilySearch record, and the associated image is 11 of 47, right half of the image, entry #31.

1870 Census - FamilySearch record. Dwelling #13, beginning on line #7.

1880 Census - FamilySearch record. Dwellin

Congratulations /u/PaleOnlyKnows!

To the others who posted, feel free to re-enter your people in the Week 52 thread this Thursday.

From /u/PaleOnlyKnows:

Emma (Fry) Cooney

Birth: 15 March 1870 in Pennsylvania, USA [1]

Death: 1 July 1939 in Lewistown, Pennsylvania, USA [1]

Spouse: William Cooney (1854-1911) [1]

Children:

  • Lloyd Thomas Cooney (1889-1972)

  • John Henry Cooney (1892-1962)

  • Eva Marion (Cooney) Carr (1902-1969)

  • Kathryn (Cooney) Picketts (1906-1945)

  • George Leo Cooney (1909-1991)

Census:

--

Emma was living with her daughter Eva and the Carr family in the 1930 US Census, as well as her two sons John and George Cooney. Her son-in-law, Joseph Picketts, was the informant on her death certificate. I would like to find out more about Emma Fry's earlier life, including her 1880 US Census listing (and possibly the 1870 US Census, where she'd be listed as an infant if so), as well as more information about her parents. I've saved some possible census records in Pennsylvania that corresponded to what I know about her. Her name may be spelled as Frey, too. Lancaster, Beaver Meadow, Harris

[Community Research] Jacob Miller (fl. 1787-1813) [Week 50]

Congratulations /u/foolishgrunt! This looks like a tough one for sure - I have a few western PA brick walls around this period myself. To clarify regarding the title of the post, when a historical figure's dates of birth and death are not known, we can use the term "floruit" (abbreviated "fl.", meaning "flourished") to denote the time period when they were known to be living. Of course, this doesn't mean that Jacob Miller was born or died near those dates, and his actual lifespan could be much longer.

[Community Research] William Chauncey Smith (1818-1896) [Week 46]

Congratulations /u/rosefiend!

To the others who posted, feel free to re-enter your people in the Week 47 thread this Thursday.

From /u/rosefiend:

*cracks knuckles* Buckle in.

My g'g'g'grandpa is William Chauncey Smith, b. 19 July 1818 in Massachusetts. We have no city of birth, no parents, siblings, nothing. I was super-fortunate and found two of his old account books. The first, from 1844-1848, showed he was from Pittsfield, MA, where he cut wood for a living. The second, from 1857, showed that he lived in Rock Island, IL.

William appeared in Missouri in 1863, married my g'g'g'grandma, and has lived here ever since until he died of lagrippe in 1896 in Holt County. I have tons and tons of info on his Missouri years. Grandpa Vance said he cut wood and burned charcoal on the river bottoms here, and his nickname was "Coaly."

But putting together his Massachusetts years has been a CHALLENGE.

I went to Pittsfield, MA, this summer and spent three days in their library trying to find this guy. No parents! No marriage records! No luck!

BUT I found him in the 1840 census after that, living in Lanesborough, MA, with a woman his age (20-25 years). He was married! I did not know this! (Can't find any marriage records for him, though - nothing in the newspaper or in the vital records.) Then the 1850 census shows him (b. 1814, MA) living with wife Charlotte (b. 1813, NY), 10-year-old daughter Elisabeth (b. 1839, MA), and one Azubah Oakley, widow, (b. 1776, Connecticut.) Is Azubah William's mom or Charlotte's mom? Azubah dies in Pittsfield, 1860, but her death records lists neither parents nor husband. Seriously, come on!!

All these years, I'd thought William was a bachelor woodcutter in Massachusetts, so I was mystified as to why his account books showed him buying yards and yards of calico, gingham, twist, cambric, hook eyes, etc. Apparently Charlotte was a seamstress or dressmaker.

Still can't find parents/siblings for William and Charlotte. Can't find a family tree for Azubah Oakley, the possible mystery mama. Can't find what happened to little Elizabeth after 1850. Did she marry and raise her own family? Did she die at a young age? I don't know. I'd sure like to find if we have another bunch of Smiths running around in Massachusetts. How crazy is that!

William was living in Rock Island, IL, in 1857. I haven't been able to find him on the census there, and I can't find him anywhere in the 1860 census. Charlotte must have passed on, beca
