During yesterday's hearing on the Lese-majeste and Sedition charges filled on the protest leaders for their protest at Sanam Luang last year, Penguin asked to make an announcement. The judges refused his request, to which he stood up on a chair and began reading what he prepared. Other people all swarmed around him to form a shield, preventing the court police from dragging him out.
>Dear all honorable judges

>Section 112 is an ancient and brutal law, not accepted by the international communities, and causes disgrace to the nation and the monarchy to the world. The law stipulates that any criticism of the monarchy is an offence, even when the criticism is proven to be true, and contains a serious punishment of up to 15 years of imprisonment. This is a law that goes against all laws of nature. It raises the monarchy up to god-like status that can do no wrong, and crushes the people down to nothing but slaves. There is no rights to speak up to protect our own justice, even when we see the gods suck out all our flesh and blood right in front of our eyes. The law restricts the thoughts and torture the liberty of the Thai people no different from punching the nails and squeezing the head like how dissents were punished in ancient times.

>Section 112 is a terrible cancer that has always eroded Thailand's democracy. In the past decade of political turmoil, Section 112 has been used countless of times as a weapon against the opposition, especially after BE 2557 (2014) when the dictator Prayut Chan-o-cha cited protection of the monarchy as the reason to overthrow a democratic government. Hundreds of patriots, protectors of democracy, that refused the power of the dictator were jailed in the name of the monarchy and were denied bail even when they were not proven guilty.
>
>I would like to ask all the honorable judges, when the judicial system has the duty to resolve conflicts by permitting justice to the people, why do you create conflicts by working with the dictatorship to rob justice from the people. The court is a place of truth where truth is brought to be proven, and yet you lock up the truth, and not let the truth be bailed to prove itself. Or do you hate and fear the truth so much that you have to lock it up to suffer, and hope that

> Thursday's rallies come a year after the start of huge student-led protests for democracy that sent shockwaves through Thailand's establishment - particularly the protesters' demand to reduce the powers of the country's revered monarch.
> Many were released from detention under conditions that include not protesting, but leaders including Anon Nampa, Parit "Penguin" Chiwarak and Panupong "Mike" Jadnok were out on the streets again on Thursday - at the forefront of the rallies.
> "The constitution must come from the people," protest leader, Jatupat "Pai Daodin" Boonpattararaksa, told the crowd in Bangkok.
> A pro-democracy protester holds a large replica of the 1932 Siamese Revolution plaque as he walks with others in an anti-government march as they commemorate the anniversary of the revolution in Bangkok on June 24, 2021 Thai police on Wednesday warned protesters against joining the gatherings due to the coronavirus surge.
> "Anyone who violates the laws during protests will have legal actions taken against them," said Bangkok Metropolitan Police Commissioner Pakapong Pongpetra, adding that authorities "Will not use force if it's not necessary".
> Since the student-led protests began, anger against Prayuth has mounted.

> 5 Min Read.BANGKOK - Sureerat Chiwarak sat with calm resolve in front of a Bangkok court as her head was shaved in a protest to support her activist son, jailed for weeks without bail on criminal charges of insulting Thailand's powerful king.
> As authorities locked up young protest leaders and largely brought their campaign to a halt, Sureerat came to forge an unlikely alliance with other mothers who are seeking freedom for their children and had never been particularly political before.
> The mothers have recently staged several quiet protests, standing together for one hour and 12 minutes - a reference to Article 112 in the criminal code on insulting the monarchy - next to cardboard cutouts of their children and showing the three-finger salute of defiance to demand that they be granted bail.
> The protesters broke longstanding taboos last year by calling for reform of the monarchy - an unprecedented demand in a country where the king is constitutionally "Enthroned in a position of revered worship" and insulting him is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
> While the calls aimed at reducing the powers of the monarchy have struck a chord with young activists, many Thais are devoted to the king and resent the protests.
> Suriya vowed to continue the campaign alongside the other mothers for the release of their children.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

For months, demonstrators have kept up their demands for resignations and reforms.
There is something noble and inspiring about masses of people rising up to demand democracy. Such movements may not always succeed in ushering in better government β witness Hong Kong, or the Arab Spring β but even when they do not, they deliver an indelible message that elemental freedoms cannot be forever denied.
The mass protests that have roiled Thailand for almost five months have not yet achieved the goals summed up by their slogan, βResign, Rewrite, Reformβ β the resignation of Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, a former army chief and an architect of a coup in 2014, the rewriting of the constitution he imposed and perhaps most notably, a check on the powers and privileges of a wayward king when even modest criticism of the monarchy can result in a long prison term.
The youth-led demonstrations, which often bring tens of thousands of people into the streets, have persisted week by week. They began over the summer as a student protest against the strict, military-style regimentation in Thai schools, an aspect of a broad effort by the powerful military-royalist ruling establishment to control and coerce the population. As the protests grew, their goals expanded into broad demands for true democracy, which has eluded Thailand despite repeated uprisings. Since it ended absolute monarchy in 1932, the country has known a dozen successful military coups, 20 constitutions and many brutal crackdowns.
Another coup is always possible in the current wave of unrest. If it followed past practice, the military would declare that it has acted to restore order, followed by a rigged election that results in another government determined to maintain the alliance of an enormously wealthy military establishment, a hugely wealthy 1 percent and an ultrawealthy king.
The challenge to that last establishment, the monarchy, has been the most conspicuous and notable feature of the protests. A legally mandated reverence for the king has long been a fundamental pi
