Hey guys, new here, about to prepare for the pwk/OSCP, just a quick one, running a Mac M1 Desktop (I don’t know why πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ) saw a live boot for kali but it turns out it’s not supported, wondering if using parallels is efficient enough for the exam? As vms are a bit slower. (working with 8gb ram btw)

if so don’t know how much to dedicate for the desktop and the VM

Video gaming on Steam via Parallels on MBP 14” 64GB RAM M1 Max.

One of the things that is generally disappointing about Mac OS is the lack of gaming support. I like the Hitman franchise but only one of their titles is available on Steam for Mac, so I installed steam under Windows 11 (Parallels) and downloaded a few games.

I dedicated 32GB of RAM to parallels and it surely eats it up when running games; however i have found that while video is generally HD and stable, large changes in picture/surroundings cause the game to stutter a bit. I am guessing this is to be expected given how I am running it, but curious if anyone can recommend solutions that I could try to fix it?

Will Parallels for Chrome OS run on the HP x360 14c with 11th gen core i3, 8gb ram and 256SSD?

Hi All,

Need a bit of advice. I'm wondering if Parallels for Chrome OS will run on the 11th gen core i3... I know all the blurb on the Parallels website says i5, I7, but I have read that the 11th gen i3 blows the 10th gen i5 out of the water. Given this, even though the new HP x360 14c 11th gen i3 is not listed as being compatible with Parallels (no x360s are..), would it work? Is there a reason why not? Obviously, I'd need to get an upgrade to Chrome Enterprise (which I am assuming is possible on a 'non-Enterprise' device) and windows licence, Office licence blablabla, but I'd do it is the device supports it. And yes, I know Docs is okay, but let's just assume I know all of the linux-based alternatives but still would prefer Office..

This is for my business (independent language trainer), so I'd need just two Parallels licences (assuming only two is possible?) and I am familiar with the x360 so would prefer to upgrade to the new version. I've looked at the HP Elite c1030...looks fantastic but I'd have to sell a kidney to get it AND it's nowhere to be found here in France at the 'mo, also seen the Acer Spin 713 is well-respected (and under consideration), but if I could just upgrade to the latest x360, I'd rather that.

Any advice you (always) helpful and knowledgeable folks could lob at me would be greatly appreciated..

Have a good day!

Parallels on M1 macbook air with 8gb RAM

Hey everyone, I'm gonna get a macbook air soon for college. I'll need to run a couple of apps (such as Power BI) only available on windows. I'm planning to use Parallels to load up windows. My question is, is 8gb unified memory enough for me to run Windows smoothly on it? Or should I go with the beefier 16gb ram model? Has anyone tried Parallels on the 8gb model here? Thanks!

Plotman config suggestions for parallel plots? 80cpus, 512GB RAM, 3 TB NVMe tmp

Hello,

I am trying to find a plotman config that puts a concurrent load on my chia machine.

Specs:

80 CPUs (Xeon Gold 6230T 2.1GHz, 40 phys, 80 w/ hyperthreading enabled)
512GB DDR3 2933MHz RAM
3 7.8TB NVMe SSDs (for plot tmp space)
5 7.8TB NVMe SSD RAID-5 volume (for farm space)

I'd like to get most of the RAM and CPUs engaged. I've played with plotman configs and can't seem to get everything loaded at once.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment!

M1 MacBook Air with 16GBs of RAM vs M1 MacBook Pro with 8GBs of RAM for medical work through Parallels

Hi everyone,

I have a friend who’s a doctor and wants to get her first Mac, but she needs Windows to run some hospital-issued software that cannot run on any Mac natively, regardless of chip type. This is why she’s planning to use Parallels to run this software, although I can’t help her decide whether to get an M1 MBA with 16 gigs of RAM or an M1 MBP with 8 gigs of RAM, or whatever configuration is best. I personally use an M1 MBA with 8 gigs of RAM for school and developing apps, but I’m suspecting it’s not enough for this software running through Parallels. What do you think my friend should get? Let me know, any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

I have a 5950x and 128 GB of ram what would be the max parallel plotting i should shoot for?

i built a massive work rig recently so why not farm some chia while not working that hard? im just doing two at a time now at around 7 hours each. wondering how high i should shoot seems like there is also some staggering i should do. I have 2 M2 drives on teh MOBO, two other sata SSDs and like 24GB of just rotational that im parking teh plots on, should i spread out plotting across all the solid drives?

what seems like my best place to start?

been running my plots on 4 threads and giving them 32 GB of ram to use (just read that that much ram might not be worth it)

HUGE ram machine, tradeoff disk performance for parallel plots?

Ok, title's a little vague.

I have a stack of older servers with ~12-16 cores, hyperthreading, and GOBS of RAM.

12x 3.5" in bays and I have powervault bays so I can get like 42 drives in a machine. They'll take 8-12TB drives no problem. I have boxes of ram for these, I can do 96GB in every one of them, might be able to scratch out 192GB in a few.

That's enough ram to do 19-38 parallel plots.

yes, HDD are slow, but with slow disk performance I need less CPU.

I'm I crazy to consider launching enough plots with 1 plot per disk to fill my ram up and going for a 'scale out' approach? Yeah, it's probably going to take 24 hours to complete a plot, but who cares if it's 30 plots a day once a day or 30 plots spread out over the day right?

*use what ya got philosophy going on here. I can't really pile in enough NVMe to make these viable that way.

Parallel Plotting - What are your CPU and RAM settings? Any point in setting low Thread numbers if you already have a delay for Phase 1?

Hi Chiaers;

Let's say I have 8 threads available, and 16GB RAM available.

I have read that you only need ONE thread of CPU after Phase 1 is complete (True?)

If I go to Add Plot > 5 Plots >Plot in Parallel

Add a 200-minute delay (Covers Phase 1 on my slow machine)

Then click on Advanced Options:

Assign 2GB RAM.

Can I assign 7 threads of CPU?

My logic is, I have set. enough delay to cover Phase 1, so that in Phase 1 the plot can use as many threads as it wants.

So once Plot 1 starts, it uses 7 thread of CPU/

After 200 minutes Plot 2 will start. By this time, plot one doesn't require more than 1 thread of CPU.

Plot 3 will start in 200 minutes after plot 2, now it would want to use 7 threads, but plot 1 and plot 2 already using 1 thread each... would it know this, and only use the available 5 threads at this stage?

Is there a way I can tell the plotter to change the number of assigned threads after phase 1?

Thanks a lot

Is 8gb ram enough for running parallels occasionally?

I've heard some people say parallels is shit if you only use 8gb and others say its more than enough.

I'm on a rather tight budget so obviously would prefer to save money where I can but if 16gb would make a huge difference then I'd pay the extra. I wouldn't be running parallels everyday or anything, just from time to time. And in term's of general use, it'll mostly be watching lectures /videos /Netflix, browsing and typing on word document. Thanks in advance!
