I only ever see circuits online where the 7seg displays are multiplexed on a unit display level. Can we multiplex the individual leds in the displays be multiplexed too?
First off, I'm much more of a programmer than an electronics guru. I've tried to do my research to ask informed questions, but it's entirely possible that I'm way off base :).
In a quest to build a relatively simple, low power, increment/decrement/reset counter with a digital display, I came across the Orient Display OD-202 (datasheet: https://www.orientdisplay.com/standard_lcd/od-202.pdf) 2-digit 7-segment LCD display that seems to fit my needs perfectly. To facilitate displaying 2 digits with only 9 pins, it uses multiplexing (I think that's the right term?) -- 2 separate COM pins, each with its own set of outputs for a given input. Performing the logic to determine which segments should be active given a decimal value is no problem for me. What IS a problem is figuring out how to drive the LCD itself.
In my research, these types of displays require an alternating current, swinging from positive to negative voltages. The linked datasheet for the OD-202 says that its operating voltage is 4.3V and the driver method is "1/2 duty 1/2 bias". How do I make sense of that in terms of the signal I need to supply to the display to drive it? I ordered an LCD driver (CD4056BE) before realizing that it wouldn't work for this display due to the multiplexing. From the datasheet though, this chip also sounds like it provides the necessary AC signal to properly drive the display itself.
I guess my question is mainly: what's my best path forward to drive this display from an ATtiny25 (+ a SIPO SN74HC164 shift register to expand outputs)?

I recently purchased some Orient Display OD-202 TN LCDs to prototype with and I'm having a difficult time getting them to work properly.
I have a display connected to an AVR ATtiny25V's IO pins directly, and the ATtiny is powered by a 3.3V supply. I've pruned everything (code and circuit) down to the basics so I can pinpoint where things are going wrong for me. The issue seems to be that, even when the voltage differential between an "inactive com pin" and the segment pin is ~1.68V, the segment for the inactive pin is briefly lit when the segment output goes from low to high. That incorrect segment then slowly fades. I have resistors tied to each of the COM pins, VCC, and GND (per below image) to create a voltage divider in order to have 1/2 VCC when I change the IO pins to input mode on the mcu. The data sheet says that its operating voltage is 4.3V and it's 1/2 duty, 1/2 bias -- I'm not sure how that voltage relates to the voltage threshold at which the segments will turn on or off. I'm under the impression that "1/2 bias" means that in addition to low and high states, there's an intermediate voltage level for the COM pins that makes them "inactive", though I'm not sure about that. I don't know exactly what 1/2 duty means in this context, though it sounds like a duty cycle of "on 50% of the time and off 50% of the time", a la PWM.
My schematic skills are not strong, but hopefully this is somewhat helpful at least.

Below is the code I'm using to test at the moment. I've made the delays 4 seconds between transitions in order to get voltage readings and ensure I understand what's happening. In the final code, each of the delays will be around 10 milliseconds to create a ~50Hz signal to drive the display. Using the below code, I would expect segment 1F (COM1 + pin 1) to be on constantly and all other segments to stay off. In reality, segment 1F does stay on constantly, but every time the segment pin 1 transitions between low and high, segment 1E also turns on briefly before eventually fading, even though COM2 is always in the input mode on the MCU and stays at ~1.68V.

I was working on a seven segment display project when I had an idea about measuring current. I had the idea that if I changed the way in which LEDs were turned on and off I could budget 20mA for the entire 7 segment display (I think this is called multiplexing). I decided to challenge myself to prove via current measurement that my way of thinking was correct. After many failures, I have become obsessed with being able to measure the difference.
Scenario 1: let's assume that I have seven LEDs that pull 20mA each. The LEDs are turned on and back off one at a time in a sequential pattern (LED1 = on, LED1 = off, LED2 = on, LED2 = off, etc) at 7kHz per entire cycle (1kHz per LED).
Scenario 2: let's assume that I have seven LEDs that pull 20mA each. All 7 LEDs are turned on and off simultaneously with a 14.28% (1/7%) duty cycle at 7kHz.
My theory:
I assume that the perceived brightness will be aproxmently the same because the LEDs in both scenarios have the same on time and frequency. Although the power (watts) usage over time will be the same, scenario 2 will have a much higher temporary current load. I am interested in measuring current. Due to the frequency and duty cycle, I assume that a multimeter cannot be trusted. I assume that for scenario 1 the multimeter would read 20mA. I don't have any idea what it would read for scenario 2 but it would almost certainly not read 140mA which is the peak load.
measurement attempt:
I have tried to measure this using MAX471 current sensor connected to my DS1054z Oscilloscope. I PWM a single LED at 1kHz as a test. I expected a square wave but it looks like a square wave would if you added a capacitor. At much higher currents and much lower frequencies, I get a clean signal but that does not help me much. I don't mind to buy some equipment if I need to but I wouldn't wanna spend any more than $100 on it. I considered buying a Hantek current probe but I don't think it would be capable of the measurement needed.
Do you have any Ideas or methods to measure the current load difference using an oscilloscope?

I have attached a screenshot of my scope. Channel 1 is the Max741 output, channel 2 is the signal to the 200 ohm load resistor that I am using as a 25mA load, and channel 3 is the voltage across the .5ohm 10W resistor that I added between power and ground. Due to the resistor placement location, I am actually measuring the power of an Arduino + 25mA
... keep reading on reddit β‘Hi, I have already designed a system for creating an Interactive LED display with 200 RGB LEDs. However, this is on a breadboard, and I'm looking to produce one to go in a bigger design project(also hobby). To make this Display, I was going to use 200 modules each having an RGB LED, Infra-red detector and infra-red LED on them. I would wire these all together with ribbon cable, to cover an area of 100x50cm. The design would allow all of the components to be multiplexed to reduce power consumption and cost of components.
The problem is, this is the first PCB I have ever designed, and so I don't know about any quirks or possible problems I might have. I used Designspark PCB to design it, and made some images for below:
Top Surface (Red = trace, Green = Solder mask, Yellow = Silkscreen & via)
Bottom Surface (Blue = trace, Green = Solder mask, Yellow = Silkscreen & via)
The square is the RGB LED, the LED shape is the IR LED, the small rectangle is the IR-phototransistor
So what I'm asking is: Can you see any problems with these designs? Can you think of any cheaper/easier ways to do this? and do you have any tips for a project of this scale?
Any criticism, advice or tips would be greatly appreciated, and please ask if I have explained badly :P

-20x10 resolution of RGB LEDs with IR proximity setup
-100x50cm area
Currently, I am multiplexing my four digit seven segment display to work with the lm35dz for displaying temperature. I am using 5ms delays to multiplex the display, but unfortunately I have to do my readings just as fast, otherwise the multiplexing will not work. I tried using a 250ms delay for the initial reading itself, then using a for-loop from 0 - 50 for the variable I am displaying, because 250 divided by 5 is equal to 50, so it would display the reading 50 times in 250ms to get to 5ms delay per output if that makes sense, but I couldn't get it working. I would highly appreciate any ideas for how I might achieve my goal.

I've been working on a project which will use custom PCBs as numeric/alphanumeric displays, and run on 3.3V. In total there's going to be 24 16 segment digits, and 9 7 segment digits. I was looking at using the HT1632C, which seems the best on paper, but I can't find any Holtek ICs on sites besides ebay or amazon. Maxim is another option, but their drivers have less outputs (seems to have at most 16x8, whereas the 1632C can do 24x16 or 32x8) and cost far more (around $8-10 a piece, compared to <$1 a piece for the Holtek ICs from sites that seem to have sold them in the past + current ebay/amazon sellers).
The HT1632C is actually EOL and the replacement is meant to be the HT1632D, but I can't find many references to it outside of Holtek's own documentation, let alone a place that sells them. And the only other similarly functioning IC that is available according to their catalog is the HT16K33, which isn't EOL but I can't find either outside of ebay/amazon or adafruit breakout boards.
So, should I take the risk and buy HT1632C on ebay/amazon (and wait longer to get them), or spend significantly more buying Maxim MAX69__ ICs from a more trustworthy vendor like mouser?

At the moment I am building my 8-Bit computer. I am facing now a problem, for which I also found a solution, but I would like to understand it...
When I try to drive the display, the two "upper" displays are not working as expected. I figured out, that the second JK-FlipFlop is not toggling. I double checked the wiring but I don't find any mistakes.
To identify the problem, I connected an oscilloscope to several points and noticed that as soon as I connect a probe to the output of the second JK-FlipFlop (PIN6) the problem was solved. I experimented a little bit with different ideas. The circuit seems to work when I

I'm working on a project with its purpose being to detect the distance and output this distance on the two 7 segment displays. With these, I have 2 resistors, 1 light sensor that can give the distance, 1 big resistor with multiple pins and two transistors.
The problem I'm having is how I can display larger numbers, e.g. the number 50 on the 7 segment displays through multiplexing.

Use case:
Educational facility consisting of multiple classrooms (six) typically seating anywhere from 15 to 30 people. Classrooms consist of a lectern /w presentation computer, large format displays student seating in anywhere from two to five rows of chairs/desks. The intent is to add a wide field of view PTZ camera with a high level of zoom (12x... think Tandberg TTC8-02 CTS-PHD-1080P12XG) Camera The administrator of the facility and lead instructor want to be able to monitor presentations/briefs (given both by instructors and students) using full camera control (PTZ) with the ability to record content across multiple classrooms from a location outside of the classroom. Complicating the requirement is that they also want to be able to capture whatever is being presented on the large format display at the head of the classroom (so, recording of two video streams).
I can't really think of a good way to do this, but I'm sure there's some sort of solution out there. Ideally, it would be best if the solution is IP based rather than having to run HDMI cable everywhere. I'm not familiar with equipment that can be plugged in between a presentation computer and a HDMI display to put that video stream on network (again, I'm sure there's something out there, just not familiar with it).

Recently I've built a decimal 0-99 counter using 74393 as ones and tens counters and 2x 7447 as 7-seg decoder.
As a next step I'd like to reduce number of 7447 decoders to one in order to use it for any number of 7-seg displays (let's say up to 6 as an example).
As you may think, I'm using output of one 393 counter as ones, and second for tens. Each output goes to it's own decoder. I'd like to alternate between two of these outputs in order to decode it to it's own display, but the only way I can figure it out is by using 8 AND gates to make some sort of 'bitmask' for 8 input lines.
What are some different approaches available here?

I've been trying to find the most reasonable solution for this and I'm feeling rather lost so I'll try asking here. Most of the people have been doing this without a shift register (directly sourcing/sinking current from 7 different GPIO pins, and the people who did used an arduino which makes this an easy task since you can just use any PNP transistor and control it with a 5V GPIO. The reason why I want to use BJT transistors is because thats what I dispose at the moment.
I want to keep the current through the LED segments to a low 5mA. The SN74HC595 allows a max of 70mA and 20mA sink/source.
The 7 Segment display is of common anode type. Which means I have to switch the 5V that go into the common anode of the 7 segment display. The LEDs currents do sink into the SN74HC595 ground when each of them is light up. Here is a quick diagram.
Until now, I do have 5 possible solutions. None of them work the way I wished, but maybe (and probably) I'm missing something. I made a simulation of each with Everycircuit (using a single LED as a test load)
Using a Sziklai pair:
This was the first thing that came in to my mind and I've seen it recommended in some forums. It does however seem to deliver very small current through the emitter. I'm not really sure why that is... tried in other simulation software but got the same. The 10kOhm base resistor doesn't seem to be interfering that much, so i don't know what it can be.

Probably not an elegant solution but it might just do the job. The simulation gives me 2.31mA through the LED with a 300 ohm resistor.

... the idea here is that the .7 voltage drop (and probably some breadboard magic) will be enough to turn a PNP transistor off with the 3V3 GPIO output.

Probably the most obvious answer but I would prefer to use the 5V pin. I think the current I'm using should be between the limits.
A voltage divider? Then I can use a PNP to switch the 7 segment display and don't worry about the current I'm gonna draw.

So I'm designing a device that will use a 3-digit 7 segment display to show the volume of water through a valve. The device will be handheld & used outside, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to make the display visible in sunlight. Is there a certain colour of LED that is easier to see in direct sunlight, for a given brightness?
Also, I'm trying to decide if I should multiplex the display (such as with a MAX7219) or if I should drive each segment individually (such as with a 74HC595). My understanding is that when you multiplex a display, you have to use more current to achieve the same brightness due to the reduced duty cycle, and this can result in problems if a segment somehow gets stuck turned on continuously.

So a while back I asked how to control a series of 14-segment LED displays using as few GPIO pins as possible. Based on all the answers, I decided to go with rolling out my own multiplexing solution (I know driver chips exist, but I thought it would be a fun and educational experience trying to do this on my own).

These are the displays I'm using.
To get the 14-bit data necessary to control an individual display, I'm daisy-chaining 2, 8 bit shift registers together. To control which display is currently been lit I'm using a 3-to-8 decoder with active low outputs.
MY PROBLEM:
So only one display is powered at a time, but each LED has 14 segments, so it acts like a 14 parallel LEDs. Here is the internal circuit diagram for reference. According to the relevant portion of the datasheet, for a small pulse, a current of up to 100mA is allowed (Am I reading the datasheet correctly? Per chip, does that mean per segment or the display overall??). I plan on supplying the shift registers with 5 volts, so if every LED segment is turned on at once, this is what the equivalent circuit looks like.
I'll calculate R, the value of the current limiting resistor, such that each LED will get 100mA. This means that at the merging point there will be 1400mA of current going into one of the pins of the decoder. Also, each pin of the shift register will need to supply 100mA, or 1400mA in total.
My question is this, Do the chips I mentioned earlier support this?

But each of them has 11 pins, one for each individual LED segment, and my Arduino Uno definitely doesn't have 44 pins (or I guess 40 pins since they could share a ground. Or a v+ source depending on how they work)
I've heard vaguely that this is what you use multiplexers for, is that what I would want to be looking for to do this? How many multiplexers would I need? Or is this even possible?
Now I'm having issues with the multiplexing circuitry. I've quadruple checked the wiring, but I can't identify what's wrong. Half of my displays won't cycle on. You can see in the linked videos that everything works, the EEPROM works, even the multiplexing works, until I remove the test LEDs from the JK flip flop output. It's like one of the JKs won't toggle without the LED...
Any ideas what is causing this? Any troubleshooting advice?

RESOLVED: I tied pin 3 on the 74LS107 to +5V. This isn't in the schematics, but seemed to fix my issue.
So I'm looking at getting this clock display (common anode) which has four 7-segment displays and a 5th "display" with 2 LEDs representing the colon. My project idea is to use this display, an MCU, and supporting circuitry to make a timer.
For the display part, the plan is to use multiplexing. This is what the setup would look like (I've only shown the part pertinent to the clock display for convenience). There are five 7-segment displays, each with 7 LEDs^β each (max that is, one of the 5 displays is the colon!). Only 1 of the 5 displays will be on at a time by the source but potentially all 7 LEDs could be turned on at once by the sink. Therefore, I'm thinking I'll need the following capabilities:
Given source has only 1 active output and sink has 7 active outputs max, and assuming each LED will use 20mA^*

I've found a high-powered shift register, the TPIC6B595N, which can take an input of up to 150ma per pin, so the sink is take care of. The problem however is the source. The high power shift register I found would be perfect it didn't only sink current. I've also found MOSFET array chips, but they only come with max 4 independent transistors when I need 5, meaning I'd need multiple of them (most efficient would probably be three 2-transistor chips).
A goal of mine is to make the circuit as compact as possible in terms of GPIO pins used and board space occupied. Multiple transistor chips would take up to many pins. If I chained another shift register to the TPIC6B595N to control the MOSFETs, that would reduce the number of pins used, but I'd still have to rely on multip
