TIL that Cambodia is an Elective Monarchy

"As far as the succession is concerned, it should be pointed out that Jordan and Cambodia have different systems for the selection of a successor to a deceased King. Jordan's monarchy, which is a product of the 19th century, is hereditary, while in Cambodia, a historical institution going back to the builders of Angkor has always been elective. Article 13 of Cambodia's 1993 Constitution states that : "Within a period of not more than seven days, the new King of the Kingdom of Cambodia shall be chosen by the Royal Council of the Throne". The Council is composed by the President of the National Assembly, the Prime Minister, the Supreme Patriarchs of the two Buddhist Orders -Mohanikay and Thammayut, and the First and Second Vice-Presidents of the National Assembly."

What do y'all think of a ceremonial monarchy like the one in Japan currently? Also why don't former countries that was once a kingdom just recognize the deposed monarch as a purely ceremonial one?

It's a win-win if you think about it. The monarch has now legitimacy and the country is still a democracy.

If the Queen can't by convention intervene in a constitutional crisis to protect Britain's people and institutions... then what is the point of the monarchy?

It can't be tourism. Empty French palaces draw more tourists than inhabited British ones, on account of the fact that tourists can actually go inside them.

Edit: RIP my inbox. I'll be reading through these comments this morning. Thank you for educating an American on... the debate about the monarchy. There's a huge cross section of views here, and I'm going to read through them all, and ask questions. I'm grateful you all took the time to answer, and discuss.

The idea of Royal Families in this day and age is ridiculous. Idolizing and supporting a Monarchy idea is backward thinking for society and only supports a greater issue of privilege in society.

Why should we idolize a royal family that is blessed with a significant amount of privileges merely because of blood line from times when society was taken advantage of by the elite? In a time when we should be celebrating equivalent rights for all we still look up to royal families that have minimal purpose in this society. As an America I cannot believe anyone would think the idea of status of a Prince, Queen, King, etc. solely based on birth is acceptable. Haven’t those times past us?

It seems that within a 80 year period Rome, Carthage and Athens all transitioned from a monarchy to some sort of constitutional republic or democracy. Is it a pure coincidence to happen during the same time frame or did the Greeks have an influence on Rome and Carthage's government change?

From what I understand:

  • The Romans founded their republic in 510 when overthrowing the king

  • The Athenians transitioned from a monarchy to democracy over thee 6th century via Solon and other politicians

  • Carthage transitioned to a Republic around 480 BC because they lost a battle badly in Sicily

They are all within close proximity to each other. I am sure that the Carthaginians had contact with the Greeks and learned their ideologies because they were at war with them. But did the Romans have contact with the Greeks or Carthaginians around 510 BC? Or was it just pure coincidence that the Romans also started a Republic around the same time as Carthage and Athens.

Forgive me if I am connecting dots that aren't there, but I just found it interesting that 3 of the main examples of democracy/republic before the modern era all occurred in the same time frame.
