AITA for gifting my great grandfather's Congressional Medal of Honor to a museum vs. giving it to my cousin?

Background: my great grandfather was a Colonel in the marines during WWII and Korea and beyond. When he was enlisted in WWII he recieved the Congressional Medal of Honor during the battle of Iwo Jima. Care of the actual medal and most of his stuff has fallen to me.

My younger 2nd cousin (now 12) loves military stuff. When he was younger I allowed him to play with my grandpas flight helmet (grandpa became a fighter pilot between WWII and Korea) and he destroyed it. Part of it was my fault but also certainly my cousin's (his mom) as well because she didn't abide by my terms when I agreed to let him borrow it.

Early last year my 2nd cousin started asking for all of grandpas uniforms and medals. I initially sort of deflected but he got more and more demanding and I was so annoyed I decided I just didn't want to deal with it anymore and I donated everything to my grandpa's hometowns hall of honor. They were thrilled with the donation and are in the process of creating a permanent display featuring the Medal of Honor, his uniforms and flight suits. I figure it's a much better use then all the stuff being in my closet. The display will have a looping video of my grandpa getting the medal from president Truman, his retirement ceremony as well as some family films we had of him. I've seen the designs and it's very befitting everything he did in his life.

Edit: lots of people commenting I did it out of spite, I don't think I did. What the situation did to was spur me into action. Sorry for not making that clear. I'd been thinking for years over what I was going to do with that stuff and this scenario sort of forced me to make a decision.

Edit 2: just to clear up more confusion, 2nd cousin (or cousin once removed I just learned) literally demanded the stuff from me. He’s 12 and his initial email was β€œI know you didn’t vote for Trump so I like the military more than you. You need to give me Grandpa Fred’s stuff. I am home all weekend. You can bring it over whenever you want. I want the medal and the flag to be separated out because it is most value (sic)”

Family to a person is pissed at me. They think it all should have stayed in the family and that I was a jerk to assume my 2nd cousin woukd have treated the stuff the same at 12 as he did the flight helmet when he was 6.

I honestly don't know, am I the asshole here?

What was the general reaction to General MacArthur receiving the Medal of Honor in WW2 despite the fact that he himself did nothing specifically brave or gallant?

I was reading about the attack on the Philippines after Pearl Harbor in 1942, and I was pretty shocked to read about MacArthur receiving the Medal of Honor for basically doing nothing and then retreating and then abandoning his troops to the Japanese.

I know some of this is hindsight, and obviously the US wouldn't want to lose such a high ranking officer to the Japanese at the beginning of the war, but it just seems like he didn't do anything that could remotely be considered brave or selfless and really the opposite could be said. I've heard some of the logic behind his medal was that in the midst of the tragedy and utter surprise and damage of Pearl Harbor the US needed some "hereos" to point to to show that we could beat this, but it just seems like the Medal of Honor was way too high of an honor to give to someone that didn't really do anything himself.

So I guess my question is how did the army and the general public react to him getting such a high honor? Also, was this just a matter of the general public didn't know how bad things had gone in the Philippines, so there wasn't any thought given to this? Did other generals or people in the military disagree with his Medal of Honor?

UPDATE: thanks for all the comments, seems like there are definitely some strong opinions on both sides.

Double-Feature Review: Medal of Honor & Medal of Honor: Underground (PS1)

"Medal of Honor" is what kickstarted the World War II shooter, which became prominent in the 2000's. Although the series disappeared after the disappointing 2010 reboot and its sequel, EA has decided to bring the series back onto VR with "Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond."

For now, let's journey back to 1999. At this time, the PlayStation 1 was riding high, and the year prior, Steven Spielberg wowed audiences with "Saving Private Ryan." Besides being a film-maker, Spielberg was also a gamer, which in turn, led to the creation of the game that started it all, "Medal of Honor," which would be followed by a sequel "Medal of Honor: Underground."

Read my review on the first two games in the venerable series here: https://itsthegamerguy.blogspot.com/2020/01/double-feature-review-medal-of-honor.html

"WikiLeaks is a service to the population. Assange should get an award forβ€”presidential medal of honor" - Noam Chomsky

"WikiLeaks is a service to the population. Assange should get an award forβ€”presidential medal of honor...The whole WikiLeaks operation has helped inform people about what their elected representatives are doing. That should be a wonderful thing to do..." - [Source] (https://www.democracynow.org/2012/5/14/noam_chomsky_on_wikileaks_obamas_targeted)

"Among the core self-identified purposes of JTRIG are two tactics: (1) to inject all sorts of false material onto the internet in order to destroy the reputation of its targets; and (2) to use social sciences and other techniques to manipulate online discourse and activism to generate outcomes it considers desirable." - [Source] (https://theintercept.com/2014/02/24/jtrig-manipulation/)

I find it interesting that this sub has so many Russian hacker truthers and anti-Assange 'he's an egomaniac, put him solitary for 100 years' commenters all of a sudden. These beliefs are antithetical to anything Noam Chomsky has written about over the course of his entire career, from disproving the lies federal agents, military and politicians tell in order to advance a special interest, to objectively demonstrating media falsities to advance an interest of national security/foreign policy.

There's not a single shred of evidence which proves the DNC emails were hacked. I challenge anyone to source real evidence. Some of you might sub to /r/media_criticism as well. Notice how todays news is totally distorted. What was reported: Julian Assange says. What was reality: Julian Assange's lawyer says Julian says a former congressman said Trump said to Julian that if he denied Russian involvement he'd get a pardon. Notice how this is Julian Assange's lawyer stating a fact about what another person said to Julian. If I said to Julian Assange, "Hey Jules, tell everyone my dick is 10 feet long and I'll give you a pardon," And Julian's lawyer says, "Joe Hill said to Julian if he tells everyone his dick is 10 feet long he'd give him a pardon," this doesn't mean my dick is 10 feet long. Just that I wanted people to think something is true. Trump wants people to believe there wasn't a Russian hacker. This is logical for Trump. But Trump wanting people to believe this, doesn't prove it to be true.

Notice too, if it was true, why not bring forward the evidence in Julian's extradition hearing? If it's SO true that the media can repeat it as if it was true, over and over and over. DNC emails HACKED (not leaked, ok).

"If you tell a lie big eno
