ELI5: How can saltwater and freshwater species of fish coexist in a brackish water medium?

I live near the Caloosahatchee river in Southern Florida and it's a brackish water river, meaning you can catch both saltwater and freshwater fish in it, but I simply can not grasp the concept of salt and freshwater fish being able to survive simultaneously? ELI5?

[Discussion] Some one recently told me I could house most brackish water fish in my aquarium because I use a water softener....

Some one recently said to me that I'm able to house brackish water fish because I use a water softer. It sounds like a crock of shit to me but I couldn't find much proving or disproving what she said. I only did some light google searches before I decided it's best to get the word here...

Please advise.

Anyone know of a list of (small) Brackish species?

I'm seriously interested in the idea of building a brackish tank with mangroves.
I live near Wilmington NC, where there is a major river flowing into the sea via a big brackish/salt marsh, so I should also be able to find a few grasses that will work for this tank, and I have a bunch of nice driftwood and a ready source of Live Oak leaves. I have both black sand and pool filter sand, and plenty of crushed coral on hand. I'm considering making this a long custom tank for the top of a bar that divides my kitchen and living room - probably a rimless tank, fairly shallow, maybe about the front to back depth of a ten gallon or a little more, unsure of how long but maybe three to six feet. I am open to the idea of dividing it with permanent glass divisions instead of top bracing, which would allow keeping a few species that are usually species only. I know about things like bumblebee gobies and that some puffers are brackish, but I'm hoping for a list, especially if I can get one with salinity ranges. Feedback from people who have personally kept brackish tanks is also desired.
And yes, if I divide it, I am probably going to try breeding Nerites in one section.

Edit: Forgot to mention - also interested in invertebrates like shrimp. I'm essentially thinking about making a divided biotope here, so several types of interesting life would be great. The current plan calls for sponge filters in each section since my initial reading indicates most of these species prefer lower flow, but I can add a small powerhead if a section needs it.

Any good resources to learn about set up and maintenance of salt water-brackish aquariums (non-reef or macro algae?)

I am a University student at a fairly small branch of a larger university in the south east. A newer professor at the school got 3 55 gallon tanks from a local education center and some friends and I have jumped on the opportunity to be the ones who are working to get some set up and running.

We decided to do this because we have experience with planted aquariums from the past but none of us have stepped into salt water. The professor does have experience with it by culturing corals and will be teaching us more but I’d like to learn more myself ahead of time since he is always so busy.

So what are some good resources to learn about husbandry of tanks that are like native estuary systems that host native species and for now, no corals or macro algae… however in the future we’d like to create a salt marsh riparium in the future with a tide cycle using a sump! But we will mostly likely be maintaining a higher salinity than most brackish tanks because our local marshes can have a salinity as salty as sea water at times 😁 Any advice or resources is greatly appreciated.

Other than the tanks we were also provided 2 hang on back filters and two remora aquac protein skimmer.

Edit: I didn’t realize I didn’t mention these tanks won’t be run only by me and some friends. They are not our personal projects. They are the school’s tanks. These tanks (probably only 1 in the near future) will be running within a non-teaching lab (used only by a handful of students conducting research) behind doors that are locked when not used for research. However they will be in front of interior windows so they can be viewed by students in the lobby but cannot access the actual tanks without permission or supervision! The costs/projects will be funded by the school and supervised and run by 2 professors who work as professors and as researchers in the same lab. Research with both students and professors happens year round so there will always be people to maintain the tanks and incoming students will also have the opportunity to take part in maintaining them for years to come.
