I love aviation museums. Something no one really talks about is the smell of old airplanes. Iβd say itβs a fairly underrated aspect of these places.

Built in 1939, holes have rusted through the ceiling over the years, putting priceless aircraft at risk of exposure to the harsh elements being let in. Thereβs also the constant threat of damage by water, birds, and high winds. The Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum needs to raise $4 million

Beechcraft Model 73 Jet Mentor. A jet engine derivative of the T-34 Mentor, it competed against the Cessna T-37 Tweet, which the Air Force adopted, and the Temco TT Pinto for the Navy. However, the aircraft was never ordered into production, and the sole Jet Mentor is in the Kansas Aviation Museum.

Grumman Kitten, an attempt to take advantage of the expected post-WWII boom in general aviation. Only two were ever made; the G-63 Kitten I being a taildragger and the G-72 Kitten II having a tricycle configuration. The Kitten II is on display at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, NY.

The L-8 blimp. On August 16, 1942, the L-8 set off on a routine patrol from San Francisco. Several hours later, it crashed in Daly City, with no trace of its two-man crew. The L-8 was later used by Goodyear until 1982, and its gondola is in the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida.

Beech C-45 Expeditor. This example manufactured in 1942 as an AT-7 trainer, then converted to C-45 configuration after World War II. One of those aircraft that donβt hold the same amount of glory as a P-51 but still were valuable assets during the war. Under restoration, Evergreen Aviation Museum.

Went to the RAAFA heritage museum in Bull Creek today, wasn't disappointed! Great access to many historical aircraft (Vietnam era Huey, my favorite!) and tons of aviation memorabilia. The military section was fantastic and smells old, hard to get that these days! Volunteer codgers were full of info!

This came from the back of a cupboard in an aviation museum. It's been sectioned so you can see how it works. There appear to be two pumps or compressors, one at a fixed angle, the other is variable. The Allen key (hex) fixings could be a later addition.
