I recently re-watched Apocalypse Now and I cannot help but wonder whether this type of fictional scenario ever occurred in reality, particularly on the fringes of the Roman Empire. If anybody doesn't know the film's story, Colonel Kurtz is a decorated and respected commander who goes mad during the Vietnam War and starts leading an army of locals, and he is then targeted for assassination by the US military.
Are there any historical parallels to this story, in the Roman Empire (especially in the early Roman Empire)? If not pertaining to Rome, are there any historical parallels you can think of?
Edit: For the millionth time, yes I have read Heart of Darkness. Stop asking.
Happy New Year! I am Colonel (Retired) Peter Mansoor, former executive officer to General David Petraeus during the surge in Iraq and now a professor of military history at the Ohio State University. I arrived at Ohio State in 2008 after a 26 year career in the U.S. Army, which included two tours of duty in the Iraq War. I was graduated from West Point in 1982 and served in a variety of command and staff positions in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East during my career. I was fortunate to be a witness to history when the Iron Curtain came down in 1989 during my tour of duty in Bad Hersfeld, Germany. I also was the founding director of the U.S. Army/Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Center and helped to edit Field Manual 3-24, Counterinsurgency, which was used to reshape U.S. operations in Iraq during the surge of 2007-2008.
I am the author of three books:
The GI Offensive in Europe: The Triumph of American Infantry Divisions, 1941-1945 (University Press of Kansas, 1999)
A memoir of my tour as a brigade commander in Baghdad in 2003-2004, Baghdad at Sunrise: A Brigade Commander’s War in Iraq (Yale University Press, 2008) - http://yalepress.yale.edu/yupbooks/book.asp?isbn=9780300158472
And my most recent work, Surge: My Journey with General David Petraeus and the Remaking of the Iraq War (Yale University Press, 2013) - http://yalepress.yale.edu/yupbooks/book.asp?isbn=9780300172355

This is my first experience with the Reddit community. I’m looking forward to your questions – ask me anything!
Thanks for a great interchange of ideas today - sorry I wasn't able to answer all the questions! Time to go watch the Orange Bowl now. Go Buckeyes!
Invest in traits that will not cripple you in the long run. Stuff like overweight, underweight, or even obese if you’re experienced enough can be fixed overtime. Stuff slow reader, or weak stomach aren’t that crippling in the longrun if you know what you’re doing.
Avoid traits that cripple vital gameplay, stuff like sunday driver, illiterate, unlucky, or ones that lock out necessary components of survival, unless its a challenge you want to take. Illiterate will soft lock you in winter as you will freeze to death unless you get lucky with campfires.
sneaking is key, whenever you’re not 10,000% sure if zombies are around, sneak, its the easiest to level up overtime.
Day 1 should focus on getting to a safe location, look at the project zomboid map for a place that suits you.
Secluded homes, maybe with fencing, away from cities work best.
Fill up EVERY pot in your house with water before it shuts off.
Each day should be planned, focus on obtaining one goal a day. One day should be for getting food, another for fitness and working out, another for finding seeds and tools, another to fix your car, schedule TV programs on life and learning, finds bookd, etc etc.
Disassemble furniture in homes you’ll NEVER base in. Carpentry is important, especially in the late game. Water catchers are IMPORTANT
To level up medicine, dig furrows with your hands and have bandages/clean sheets ready.
Do not take on zombies you’re not confident and 100% on knowing you can handle. Avoid groups of 3+ until you’re stronger.
Try to be as quiet as possible, do not step on glass, do not run over zombies in your car, don’t do anything that involves a shitton of unnecessary noise unless its vital for survival.
Do not under any circumstances use a firearm in the area of your base.
Firearms should be reserved for a 100% last resort do or die situation, AND you have a plan of escape.
For the helicopter event, use a secondary base, have a radio with the emergency broadcast channel, check it every day at 9am, if they mention air activity, hide in this base the ENTIRE day.
Barricade this base, make sure its 2 floors, have sheet ropes for the top floor. The sheet rope should only be used if you’re 100% overwhelmed in an unlucky zombie attention span, but just note they ARE NOT FULL PROOF.
Once you survive the helicopter event, its gone for good, you can destroy every radio you see now for scrap electronics which are important for gen
