In an interview to FilmFare in 2019 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1FCYcXAgL0), Aishwarya Rai Bachchan claimed that she is the first leading actress to break the stereotype of actresses not working during pregnancy and actresses not coming out in limelight during pregnancy. According to Aishwarya, it was taboo for women to work during pregnancy and most heroines stayed away from limelight until she broke the stereotype. Aishwarya further said: "I have always been at the frontline. For every phase of pregnancy I have been in the frontline of the army to take all the bullets and then it was cakewalk for everybody else and others had it easy because of me".
But Aishwarya forgot to mention the chaos she created when she hid her pregnancy from Madhur Bhandarkar during shooting of 'Heroine' (2011). She also forgot to mention that she was kicked out of the movie because she kept the director and producer in dark about the fact that she was 4-months pregnant. Here's an article from 2011 which explored "Why is Aishwarya Rai hiding her baby bump"? https://www.idiva.com/entertainment/celebrity-news/why-is-aishwarya-rai-hiding-her-baby-bump/photogallery/8211. Aishwarya Rai tops the chart in another article about "5 Bollywood celebs who successfully managed to hide their pregnancy from media". https://www.cosmopolitan.in/celebrity/news/a12454/5-bollywood-celebrities-who-successfully-managed-hide-their-pregnancy-media
Kareena Kapoor set new maternity trends in Bollywood, be it with her active professional life or setting new fashion trends by displaying her bump in stylish outfits. Kareena Kapoor took pregnancy fashion a notch higher by flaunting her cute baby bump in every kind of dress you can ever image, from lehnga to a high-slit dress. Kareena shot for 'Veere Di Wedding' while being pregnant with her first child and she even showed her baby bump on the big screen. Kareena also continued to host her show 'What Women Want' while she was pregnant. Kareena is the first actress who has authored a book about her pregnancy and motherhood journey. Kareena broke all the stereotypes with her maternity style. She is the first actress in recent years to work throughout her pregnancy but

In Bollywood I think it's normal for actresses to hide their age. Raveena Tandon's wikipedia page says she's 1974 born. But she's either 1970 or 1972 born. I remember I read an article which was published on a magazine in 1990 . In that article raveena was mentioned as "the 18 year old model " which makes her 1972 born. Again I've read articles mentioning her to be 1970 born. Don't know what her real birth year is. Urmila Matondkar was also hiding her age. She's 1974 born according to wikipedia . But when she contested elections her lie got caught. Music Composer Kaushal S Inamdar wished her all the very best for her political career and mentioned that she's one year senior to him in college. He met her for the first time when he was in first year of graduation and at that time urmila was in second year of graduation and a student of English literature. Her movie Narsimha which was her first movie as an adult (she worked as a child artist in masoom) released or about to release at the time of their meeting. Narsimha released in 1991 . If she's in second year of graduation at that time it makes her 20 years old and a 1974 born can't be 20 years old in 1991 . Then again from current generation we've Katrina kaif, Shraddha Kapoor, Swara Bhasker and latest addition Sara Ali Khan . Wikipedia says Katrina is 1984/83 born . But I remember reading her interview in which she said she's 8 years old when the Berlin Wall fell. The Berlin wall fell in 1989 which makes her 1981 born. Shraddha is 1987 born but after the success of Aashiqui 2 she changed it to 1992. Swara Bhasker and Minisha Lamba were classmates. Then how come Swara be 1988 born when her classmate Minisha is said to be 1985 born? Clearly she's hiding her age. Coming to Sara. Everyone especially the 90s kids knows it very well that she's 1993 born. But she's changed it to 1995 .
A couple of days ago someone shared a bunch of photos of 90s/2000s Bollywood actresses, and common consensus (in the comments) was that the current actresses couldn't compete with them, especially in terms of looks.
It is true that the previous generation of actresses were absolutely stunning, don't get me wrong. But, I think it's fine that actresses today aren't as stunning as their older counterparts. After all, looks don't affect their acting ability, which is what we should be judging in the first place (now, if we were judging actresses today solely on their inability to act, then it would be a different story). Plus, not having drop-dead gorgeous actresses on screen is positive representation for ugly baby-faced potatoes like me, lol! Not every person has the best features and it's rare to find someone in real life who looks as amazing as the older actresses did, so it's nice to see average(ish), plain people on the big screen making a name for themselves.
The real issue for me about the low beauty standards in Bollywood currently is the double standards. All of the nepo actresses (Sara, Janhvi, Ananya) are average looking, but the outsiders have to be absolutely beautiful. The insiders are given the liberty of looking plain but an average-looking outsider won't be given a chance. Furthermore, the beauty standards of fair skin, not curvy, big eyes, small nose, etc. are still present. Yes, there are average looking actresses but they all have the same features. If we're getting average-looking actresses, show me all kinds of plain and average looking! Where are the actresses with big noses? Or crooked teeth? Or eyes that are too close together? Or dusky skin? Or a short and/or stout figure? Or curves? etc. A dusky-skinned actress or an overweight, curvy actress has to look phenomenal while someone with fair skin can get away with looking homely
Hopefully I've articulated that well - let me know if I haven't. I've seen this opinion floating around on this sub quite a bit and I've just wanted to input my 2 cents :)
I LOVE Kiara Advani
I will go first
Angelina Jolie - Aishwarya Rai (Both are considered extremely beautiful, both are superstars, unapproachable, intimidating, ice maidens)
At a certain point before in Bollywood most top actresses stopped being so relevant by their mid 30βs. But in this generation we are still talking about katarina, deepika, priyanka, Kareena and so onβ¦. Like think about the next generation with the exception of Alia bhatt, we have janvi kapoor ananya panday and so onβ¦
I like getting into other actresses and their movies.
We talk about age gap between Hero and heroine. What are some cases of opposite? It will be better when it isn't even discussed or play any part in the story.
I was watching Superman and Lois. Ellizabeth Tulloch is 6 years older than Tyler. Similarly Amy Adams is almost 10 years older than Henry Cavill. Apparently Lois lane is normally played by an older actress
Closer to home.
Mahi Gill is 6 years older than Gippy
Sargun Mehta is around 4 years older than Ammy Virk.
From Aishwarya peaking around Devdas, to Deepika during Piku, Madhuri close to 30 during Raja, Rani around Black, Bunty aur Babli, most of the leading Bollywood actresses peaked around their 30s. Alia is a different case since her filmography has been carefully planned out and she's given everything on a platter. Also I would not include her in the bracket of legendary Bollywood actresses ever. So do you feel Kriti will peak as she's 30 too and has the most impressive lineup with Mimi, Hum Do hamare do, Adipurush, Shehzaada, Ganapath, Bachchan Panday etc. All these sound like sureshot superhits. Will these catapult her to the top? As people are already dead tired of Alia.
Is it a beauty standard in India? Most of the actresses from 00s to 10s are above 5β5 when the average Indian woman is 5β0. Compare this to Hollywood where the average actress is 5β5 and the average american woman is 5β4. I always felt like tall desi women hear the β youβre too tall no one will marry youβ so I was surprised to see that most actresses are tall. Would love to hear everyoneβs thoughts
