If you're old enough you are familiar with the pass happy past of BYU, which led to a parade of top producing college QBs: Gifford Nielsen (3rd round pick), Marc Wilson (15th overall), Jim McMahon (5th overall), Steve Young (1st overall in supplemental draft), Robbie Bosco (3rd round), Ty Detmer (Heisman winner, 9th round pick), John Walsh (7th round), Steve Sarkisian (undrafted), John Beck (40th overall), and Taysom Hill (undrafted). Tomorrow, Zach Wilson will be added to that list.
But the name that started it all is hardly remembered outside of BYU circles: Virgil Carter, the man who was arguably the unintentional grandfather of the West Coast offense. Here's the basic story of how Virgil Carter changed football (told from an admittedly BYU-centric viewpoint).
In the mid to late 1960s BYU football began to recognize that the talent pool available to the program was, ahem, limited. In an attempt to even the odds against more talented teams BYU began to explore an open style passing attack at a time when running the ball was not just the norm, it was the gospel of college football.
The school went out and found a typical BYU type player, a QB who was smart and accurate but lacked the physical abilities that would make him attractive to the college powerhouses of the day. This QB was Virgil Carter, an undersized kid from a town of 500 people in southern Utah . By leaning on his processing, timing, and accuracy the program began to realize success. Losing turned to winning and by his final year in 1966 Carter threw for nearly 2,200 yards, more than 1966 Heisman winner, the legendary Steve Spurrier.
At the time, LaVell Edwards was an assistant coach at BYU focused on the offense. He would later go on to take over as head coach. Edwards devised a pass heavy attack that focused on intermediate timing/rhythm throws with deep threats from wide outs to open up the field. The system relied heavily on passes to tight ends, running backs, screens, and draw plays for the running game. It also made a mediocre Virgil Carter arm look top tier.
After 3 years as starter at BYU Virgil Carter was drafted by the Bears in the 6th round, who quickly realized his limitations. Within a couple of years they traded him to the Bengals. During this time with Chicago the enterprising Carter completed a master's degree in Mathematics at Northwestern University. When the Bengals got him to Cincinnati Carter supplemented his NFL income by teaching math and statistics at Xavier Uni
... keep reading on reddit β‘I just bobbed in here for a can of pop and it was one of the weirdest experiences Iβve had in a shop. The fella asked if I needed any help finding anything in particular. Then lots of family(?) members came out from the back and stood there watching my every move while I selected a drink. When I paid it was as if theyβd never used the till before and didnβt know how to give me change.
Whatβs the story with it?! They got a brothel in the back or what? π
Just realised I need to print off some ferry tickets for a super early ferry tomo.
Anyone know any newsagents near them open late who do printing?
