PLAYER STATS |
The Chargers are entering the 2022 offseason with a wealth of resources: $70 million in cap space and eleven projected draft picks. We also only have thirty-three players under contract. This is lining up to be an extremely active period with a lot of moving parts, and below I have outlined the current situation of each position group on the offensive side of the ball for reference before the stove gets cooking. The offense is relatively intact, with few starters to manage and mostly backups to consider. Drop your thoughts, predictions, and wishes in the comments!
Quarterback
Under Contract: Justin Herbert, Easton Stick
Free Agents: Chase Daniel
Outlook: Justin Herbert is entering the third year of his rookie contract and is not yet eligible for a contract extension. The questions at this position begin behind him. We don’t really know what this coaching staff thinks about Easton Stick after one season, and he has been inactive for almost every game. Was he just kept as a COVID insurance policy? Does he have a chance to be a long-term backup to Herbert? Is he ready to be a backup now? It’s very hard to say, and next year is the last on Stick’s rookie contract. If he is ready, great! If not, I don’t see any reason to keep him on the roster (small COVID caveat here I guess). Cutting him would save almost $1M. Chase Daniel is an interesting case, too. He was brought in for his familiarity with Lombardi’s offense to help Herbert get up to speed and it seems to have been a big help. But do we need a second season of that? Another mystery. I don’t have much faith in him to keep the ship afloat if Herbert were to miss a game or two, which is what you need from a backup in a Super Bowl-hopeful season. Maybe it makes sense to keep him again as QB3 for that mentor role, but QB2 should either be Stick or someone not currently on the roster.
Possible Targets: Mitch Trubisky, Teddy Bridgewater, Jacoby Brissett
Runningback
Under Contract: Austin Ekeler, Joshua Kelley, Larry Rountree, Gabe Nabers
Free Agents: Justin Jackson
Outlook: Austin Ekeler is under contract through the 2023 season. A contract restructure is possible and would save us $2.5M against the cap. Joshua Kelley and Larry Rountree are both on their rookie contracts and cutting either would save around $700k. I do not expect both of them to make the roster next season as neither has done much with the opportunities given this year, and they’ve both spent games inactive. Most
... keep reading on reddit ➡I believe the Chargers 2021 offseason has a very good case for the single best in the entire NFL. You'd have a difficult time finding another team that added the same amount of talent and impact players, and it was done without any egregious whiffs as well. Tom Telesco did an outstanding job this year bringing in players on good contracts who are making an immediate impact, and followed that up with what is looking like a stellar draft class. As an added wrinkle, this was all done for a brand new coaching staff who brought in their own offensive and defensive schemes. So it's frustrating when I see all of the anger and (often just factually incorrect) criticism toward Telesco just because we're not winning every single game. Here I will go through the moves and additions he made this year, so we can celebrate the work he has done.
1/17/21: The Chargers sign Brandon Staley to be the next Head Coach
Second only to your franchise quarterback (which he coincidentally also nailed last year), the head coach is one of the most important decisions a GM makes. Considered a bold choice by most, as he is only 38 and spent just one year as a coordinator before this job, so far it looks like we've hit a home run with Staley. The team is currently 8-5 in his first season with playoffs on the horizon. There are still kinks to be worked out but that's to be expected with a rookie. The future looks bright with him at the helm.
3/18/21: The Chargers sign OL Matt Feiler to a 3yr/$21M contract
The first signing of Free Agency went towards building up what has been a bad to terrible offensive line for Tom Telesco's tenure. Feiler was a utility man for the Steelers playing both guard and tackle. He was brought in to be the starter at left guard, and he has easily outplayed his contract already. He has been a force in the run game as well as an adequate pass protector, and forms one of the best left sides in football along with a couple other of this year's additions.
3/19/21: The Chargers sign C Corey Linsley to a 5yr/$62.5M contract
At the top of every good little Chargers fan's wishlist sat Corey Linsley, 2020's first team All-Pro center. And Telesco Claus delivered, making him the highest paid center in the NFL. Linsley has been every bit as good as advertised and his veteran presence and knowledge of the game has been a huge boost to Herbert and the offensive line as a whole.
***3/22/21: The Chargers sign OG Od

How much does Mike demand? I’m comfortable with 10 a year. Bring back Guyton even if he’s a WR4 he’s got chemistry with Herbert- Guyton isn’t enough as the speed threat alone though.
The team might need more speed at WR to unleash Herbert more. Mike is a beast but he’s not opening up the defense. Palmer looks good in the X role and isn’t opening up the defense either. The writing is on the wall to let Mike walk unfortunately. Christian Kirk?

A Parham TE1 experiment might work. McKitty blocked well enough and should have a bigger role next year. Anderson took over FB role for Nabers. There’s a lot of potential free agent TEs you can trust for cheap. All on the table.

A few months ago, a dive into Grant Hill's Wikipedia page got me wondering. How many active teammates did he have? Curiosity piqued, I went from there and scanned over all NBA Hall of Famers and compiled their active teammates. And then did it with baseball. The NFL, with their much larger rosters, was a bit frightening, but here it is at last! First, a few ground rules.
A. Each player must have either played this year, or be on the injured reserve. No free agents, so players like Larry Fitzgerald were disqualified from this exercise.
B. Practice Squad DOES count. Tahir Whitehead played with Calvin and he's on a practice squad this year, I counted him. On the flip side, TO only played on the Seahawks practice squad in 2012, but I still counted the Hawks teammates.
C. Finally- I'm anything but perfect! I skimmed over all these rosters over a few hours, and I'm sure I missed a few here or there. Only caught Broncos Brett Kern, Steelers Brian Hoyer and Falcons Dustin Colquitt at the last moment. If you see where I erred, don't be afraid to correct me- I also used the rosters on Wikipedia, because Football Reference is murderously slow, so that might not capture the full season. Anyway, the players!

The regular season is (a little past) halfway over and so I’m rolling out my annual midseason awards post. At 6-4 we have a lot to celebrate so far this season, with contributors up and down the roster. Stars and role players alike have stepped up this year to propel this team along what looks like a playoff bound trajectory. This post is meant to give special recognition to some of those players who have stood out and elevated the Chargers in 2021. If you have any ideas for award categories to add, let me know!
MVP: Justin Herbert
We start off with an easy one. Our young QB is building off his incredible rookie season with another brilliant year in which he is top 10 in the NFL in yards and touchdowns. There’s not much I can say about Herbert that hasn’t already been said. He’s amazing, and on this Thanksgiving weekend I am reminded how thankful I am to be a fan.
Offensive Player of the Year: Austin Ekeler
Racking up 4 touchdowns on Sunday Night Football is certainly one way to get some attention. Ekeler is on pace for over a thousand yards rushing, almost another thousand receiving, and 20 touchdowns this season. His importance to the team cannot be overstated, as we’ve seen how well the other RBs have done in relief appearances. Ekeler’s contract is one of the best deals in all of football as he continues to be a major piece of the offensive success.
Honorable Mention: Keenan Allen
Defensive Player of the Year: Joey Bosa
Joey has been his usual destructive self on the defensive line this season despite being double teamed at one of the highest rates in the league. He is in the top 15 in sacks and hits and has made an impact both on the edge and from the interior. Once the Chargers get some serious inside threats, Joey is going to establish himself as an annual All Pro.
The Kassim Osgood Special Teams Player of the Year: Dustin Hopkins
Another year, another season of the Chargers at the bottom of the league in terms of special teams performance. One bright spot is midseason pickup Dustin Hopkins. He is 7/7 on field goals and 11/12 on XPs. The most consistent kicker the Chargers have had in years, he may have returned to his previously elite form.
HM: Andre Roberts
Rookie of the Year: Rashawn Slater
For a team with a decade of bad offensive line play, drafting an all-pro-level rookie at left tackle feels surreal. Slater is a dominant force both in the run and pass game who has more than held his own against
... keep reading on reddit ➡I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
Fresh Donuts!
Field Goals:
By Minutes: Elijah Hughes (17 minutes) (NO CHANGE)
By Attempts: Marko Simonovic (5 FGA) (NO CHANGE)
For the first time this season in Donuts, field goals didn’t change. This is to be expected, if you think about it. The pool of players to draw from gets more and more shallow as the season progresses – you only get new arrivals when a team signs another g-league player to replace a COVID guy at this point. You can’t re-enter this list. Only 25 players in the association this year have played a minute of basketball without making a single shot: perhaps Gary Clark is the most prestigious among them, which tells you something about the caliber of player here.
3 Point Field Goals:
By Minutes: Rudy Gobert (920 minutes)
By Attempts: Justin Champagnie, Petr Cornelie (7 attempts)
Champagnie and Cornelie both added 1 to their tally, so they leave Khem Birch behind to co-own 1st place. Champagnie is interesting in as much as he’s still perfect at the charity stripe (9-for-9), so you’d expect him to be a competent 3-point guy.
Free Throws:
By Minutes: Paul Reed (142 minutes)
By Attempts: Five players (2 attempts)
B-Ball Paul makes his first-ever appearance on the Donuts list. I wonder if anyone has ever referred to him as “DePaul Reed”, which is what I would have done had I been in charge of making basketball player nicknames. In either case, he’s a fun player, and he’s actually been a decent player this season despite taking a step back in his second season. He rates as about a league-average player as a bench guy.
All 5 of the players leading by attempts have been putrid this season. The “best” of them, Marcus Garrett…is Marcus Garrett.
Missed Field Goals (min attempts 1):
By Minutes: Jericho Sims (58 minutes) (NO CHANGE)
By Attempts: Onyeka Okongwu (4 attempts)
When I was looking at the Atlanta box score a couple days ago, I was a little drunk and thought for a split second that Onyeka Okongwu was Chiney Ogwumike. Not my finest hour, but given the COVID problems the association has been having she can’t be that far from getting a 10-day amirite? In any case, Okongwu has been lights-out from the field in his (definitely his) 14 minutes, adding 2 free throws to his tally. That said, 5 personal fouls in 14 minutes means anger management classes are certainly in his future.
Missed Three Pointers (min attempts 1):
By Minutes: Willy Hernangomez (239 minutes, 2 attempts)
By Attempts: Anthony Gill (3 attemp
