A list of puns related to "International Student Identity Card"
I have found that ISIC has several benefits and it costs like 20$ to get one. But as a member of the CFS one can get it for free... So is the student union of the University of Manitoba a member of the Canadian Federation of Students?
TLDR: My roommate charged a $2500 MBP laptop to my credit card without my knowledge/permission. She refuses to pay me back. I filed a police report to send to my credit card company, but this puts her student visa status at risk. Am I doing the right thing?
I'm a PhD student making a meager living through research + teaching. I live in grad student housing in a 2b1b apartment. Each tenant signs a separate lease for each bedroom, but the common areas are shared. My last roommate moved out this summer. We placed an ad in our grad student forum for her replacement, which is how I ended up with my current roommate.
About 2 weeks ago, I came out of the bathroom to find my roommate in my room, on my laptop. She said that her phone was out of battery and she needed to check her email. Then, she rushed out of my room. Since she acted so suspiciously, I checked my browser history but nothing seemed awry.
A few days later, my roommate rushed into our apartment and her room holding a large Amazon package. I remembered that my Amazon account has my payment info saved, so I checked my order history. A $2500* MBP laptop was charged to my credit card without my knowledge or permission, addressed to my roommate.
*$2500 is a lot of money to me - it's more than my rent + food for a whole month.
I immediately confronted my roommate. She responded by bursting into tears - I'm still not sure if that was meant to manipulate me - and ultimately explained that she needed a new laptop for her classes+research but couldn't get her parents to transfer money to her bank account in time. She assured me that she'd pay me back in a few days.
A few days passed, and I was growing more and more nervous. Then, I saw her coming home with bags of new, expensive clothing. I took that to mean that she had the money to pay me back. At this point, my roommate started saying that she paid (past tense) me back using Venmo, and that it should show up in my account in a few hours. A few more days passed. Given her shady behavior thus far, I didn't believe that she had sent me my money at all.
At the 1 week mark, I gave her the ultimatum that if she didn't pay me back ASAP, I'd be forced to file a police report. This resulted in more tears, and my roommate locked herself in her room and refused to speak with me.
2 days later, I received an email from the Dean of Graduate Studies stating that if my roommate is charged with a felony, she might get deported because she's here on a student v
... keep reading on reddit β‘I will be travelling to USA, Mexico City and Canada (Toronto, Quebec City, Montreal) over the summer, was wondering if having those cards could help me save some dollars. Anyone with experience?
I got a (legitimate) one for a trip to Egypt where all the sites were discounted (half off!) with the card. Are there many discounts available in the above countries for it? Or not really?
Edit: I had forgotten there's actually a website listing the specific discounts available in each location:
In short - as everyone said - not terribly worthwhile. A few hotels which are probably better booked online anyway (I checked one - it's regular rate was below the "discounted" ISIC rate). A little over half off for the Kuala Lumpur hop-on hop-off bus tour, that was the only thing of plausible interest. And some random restaurant discounts I wouldn't necessarily trust the waitstaff to know about...like 20% off Outback, the hell?
So I'm going to be moving to the UK to do a postgraduate degree later this year. Plenty of time to get the financial aspects in order, so I'm doing my research.
I'm trying to figure out the best credit card option for my situation. I'm thinking opening a new credit card would be beneficial (especially a travel one, to try and earn points/save money on flights) however I'm also aware that I might rack up a lot of foreign transaction fees converting pounds to CDN if I use it when I'm in the UK (ex monthly rent, bills, etc)
I guess I'm wondering if anyone had any thoughts on what the best option for me might be?
I don't particularly want to open up a credit card account based in the UK (I plan on returning after my studies), so it'd need to be in Canada. There seem to be a lot of good sign-up offers on the various websites I've looked at...any good recommendations/insights that anyone has?
Dear all,
I've been following this subreddit for a while and it is super interesting. I didn't use to live in the US so it wasn't very actionable, but now I'm here!
I'm studying in a graduate program, and when I opened my checking account Citi gave a Rewards+ card with a $1000 line of credit. I have the card, I use it, but I hate Citi: their service is awful, the card has been flagged 10 times so far, and every time to unblock I have to spend 50 minutes on the phone.
Given this, I want to use another card to build my credit, and I'm asking for your advice and knowledge.
Some data points that you might find useful:
Now the questions that I have:
I'm an international student in the US. I would be here for another 4-5 years before I return to home country.
I was advised by other international students to go for Discover it card, wanted a second opinion.
Please advise.
Edit: I will be receiving my SSN soon.
Edit2: My goto groceries stores are Aldi's, Walmart. And for online shopping Amazon. I mostly cook at home and go to fast food shops/restaurants once in two weeks. For transportation, I use the public transport, with sometimes using Uber and Lyft.
Hi folks, Iβm an international student here studying in America and Iβm planning to start my OPT in January next year. I received my EAD card to work last week. However, they made a typographic error on my card. I had to fill out a typographic error form online and they said expect a reply by the 30th of November in an automatic email response. Does anyone know how long this will take or how I can speed up the process? I applied for my OPT in October and got my card a month later which was so fast after expecting it to take 3 months. Iβm just worried now that with having to get a new one because of the typographic error it could take a while now.
Also, does anyone know if I can return home for the Christmas holidays with my EAD card? Or what do people recommend I do as I havenβt seen my family for quite a while.
Hi everyone, itβs my first time posting something on this app!
Iβm an international student from SEA flying to Germany in a few days for my 3 year- Bachelors Degree.
I wanted to know if itβs easy/conveniently accessible to acquire a sim card in Germany for International students? If so, where can I find them and what is a good sim provider? Lastly, do I need to already have my current account before I can subscribe to a local network provider?
I plan to get one with an internet plan but am not too sure because of these few questions and was hoping I could get my answers here.
Thank you in advance!
So I cant change any of my legal documents of my home country before getting SRS but I wanna start the legal process on my Canadian documents if thats possible
Is there any other international student here who changed theirs before their home country's documents? If so can I pm you?
And please do tell what is the difference in them? Can. You give me advice on what is the best card for international students?
I am with Bank of America, by the way.
context maybe: if a green card holder left america and completed their last 2 years of highschool in another country and applied to colleges, would they be considered an international student or still instate/out of state
Hey guys I'm an incoming international student this fall. I'm planning to buy a sim but dont know which sim should I buy. Which service provider works best in the US and also works well in the Riverside area? Thanks
My roommate is an international student who was interested in obtaining the Discover Student It, and I was helping them along the process of applying (i.e. what they would need for the application, what they should look at in a card, etc.). They just recently got their social security number and were ready to apply for the card. They have an income of approximately 4500 a year while in school, and no credit history (that I am aware of). They ended up getting denied for the card. I suggested that they should call Recon to get some type of explanation for why they got rejected for the card (especially since it is meant for students to help build credit), and to see if there is anything that he could provide them to help change their decision. Does anybody know what happened here? I assumed that it was because of virtually 0 credit history, but are the student card standards for acceptance different based off of citizenship status?
does anyone know how the vaccine barcode comes to you? i applied about 2 weeks ago but donβt know where to find it. i thought itβd get emailed but i donβt remember submitting my email when i submitted my vaccine proof. iβm from the US if that matters
Hi,
I am an international student doing my masters in Ohio. I just got my SSN as I have a job on campus and I want to know what credit cards I am eligible for.
Current cards: (list cards, limits, opening date)
FICO Score: No idea yet
Oldest account age: e.g.2 months
Income: e.g. $24,000 - International Student
Average monthly spend and categories:
Open to Business Cards: e.g. No
What's the purpose of your next card? e.g. Building credit/ Balance transfer/ Cashback
Do you have any cards you've been looking at?
Are you OK with category spending or do you want a general spending card?
Any help regarding finding a good credit card is greatly appreciated.
Is anyone aware of how to do this? I got vaccinated with my first shot in Ontario and second shot in my home country. I updated Ontario/Waterloo Public Health with my second shot info.
How am I able to get a proof of vaccination for both my doses from Ontario?
I spend a lot of time in Quebec and all my IDs have my Ontario address, so I need the Ontario proof of vaccination when they implement the vaccine passport on the 1st
I heard CampusSims partnered with Pitt to give international students sims cards for free. CampusSims is partnered with mintMobile as well. I canβt say much to anything yet and will update with my experience but I just got mine after going to OIS office at WPU 708. Any one else got this? Please share your experiences!
Bank of America in my case
How to get one? Thanks
