It's for an essay I'm working on about the legacy of Athenian democracy. I know Bookchin talks about it a fair bit but only really in relation to other points he's making -- I'm looking for full pieces written on this topic. Preferably stuff that can be accessed online. Thanks!

How did Christendom address their knowledge gay relationships in ancient Greece and Rome before the modern acceptance of same-sex relations?

For much of European history there seems to have been both an extreme admiration for the ancient Greeks and Romans and an extreme taboo around same-sex relations. I am curious how scholars reacted to actions that they saw as heinous being perpetrated by people who they were studying, admiring, and taking influence from. I could think of three ways it may have been addressed: the existence of same-sex relations in antiquity could have been actively censored, it could have simply been ignored, or they could have acknowledged that these were pagans and this was just one of the many sins they committed while still having admirable qualities.

I know this question covers an extremely broad period of time from the early Middle Ages to the 19th century. While I am curious about attitudes over this entire period, I imagine the answer would constitute an entire book. I would be happy with and answer that covers any sub-period in question, but to narrow the question, I think the Renaissance period could be most interesting. To my perception, this was when admiration for ancient Greece and Rome seems most extreme while taboo around same-sex relations was still at a maximum. I imagine once we get into the Enlightenment this topic is less interesting as people may have been less pious and could have held a more nuanced opinion of a people. I am more interested in the more pious period, when (perhaps to be hyperbolic) Plato would have been burnt at the stake if he was alive then.

Thanks for any answers!

Russia vs USA rivalry parallels with Sparta vs Athens rivalry of Ancient Greece (long post)

Question for Russians on Reddit.

Do you agree that there are many parallels regarding the feud between your country and USA of today compared to Sparta and Athens of Ancient Greece?

USA

  1. Strong navy.
  2. trade primarily conducted by sea
  3. enjoys a high standard of living due to excellent geographic location being protected on both sides by ocean and surrounded by friendly countries that are unlikely to attack it. Is incredibly rich in natural resources. Most importantly, the dollar is the world reserve currency.
  4. Military service is voluntary
  5. A "democracy". The federal government is often challenged and blocked by state governments.
  6. Individualistic. Society places high value on the self and individualism

Russia

  1. Strong army. Surrounded by potentially hostile neighbors on all sides, which forces Russia to maintain a huge and powerful ground force, arguably the world's strongest
  2. trade conducted primarily through land because of its poor geographic location. Most of its coastline freezes, forcing Russia to expand Westward and/or southward to secure a warm water port to conduct maritime trade and naval exercises (Crimea, Vladivostok for example)
  3. Isn't poor and agricultural like Sparta was. But has a lower standard of living than the USA on average. Partly because well, Russian ruble is not the WRC and thus Russian government actually has to work to stay within their means whereas the US government can fire up the printing press and just print, spend their way like no tomorrow as long as the USD is WRC
  4. Military service is mandatory
  5. There are elections, but the central government of Russia is far more powerful and far reaching than the one in the United States. You talk sh9t about Putin and you're probably going to get in trouble. Whereas in the US, you had Madonna boasting about how she wanted to blow up the White House. And you had people threatening to kill Trump
  6. Collective. Russian society is more about stability, unity, and cohesion over individualism. Its much more conservative and orthodox than the Liberal American society. Guys are expected to act like guys, stand up for themselves, protect their families, and serve their country. Unlike in the West where men are becoming increasingly effeminate, physically and mentally weak. We see that in their leaders too. Justin Trudeau, Joe Biden, Emanuel Macron, etc.

What are your thoughts, Russians of Reddit?

Is this a fairly accurate comparison
