Not so long ago, the Gorch Fock sailing ship was the pride of the German navy, often called the country's "floating ambassador". But after two suspicious deaths of two female cadets and leaked information about sexual harrasement and abuse, the reputation of the flagship has seriously suffered. It was therefore dubbed "Germany's biggest floating brothel".
The Gorch Fock is a three-masted barque built in 1958. Officially Germany considers it a βtraining shipβ and it is used to accustom recruits to life at sea, but in effect it is a naval talisman.
Recently, The ship has been undergoing repair for damage to the hull and it's hugely critisised that after three years the ship is still disassembled and there is serious doubt whether it will ever sail again. The intital budget was just β¬9.6m (Β£8.5m) and the repairs were supposed to take only 17 weeks. More than three years later, we hit 100000 million and an end is not in sight. The German navy has come under fire for spending millions on repairing the historic tall ship at a time when frontline units are facing serious equipment shortages.
The leaked β report accuses the defence ministry of βa lack of planningβ and βfailure adequately to prepare for the repair of the ship.
A lot of critiques question the purpose of the training ship and think we don't need it anymore and it has outlived it's time and purpose.
Especially after two suspicious deaths and a reputation of being a party sail ship, tax payers question to spent so much state money on it.
Although sexual harrassment is not particularly unique to the Navy and occurs everywhere: the ships " culture " was dominated by abuse, harrassment and bullying behavior.
An American wide-ranging study of sexual assault and harassment among military ranks found the biggest risks are on the Navyβs fleet of ships.
βIn one military service, for instance, women could see their risk doubled or halved, depending on the installation or ship to which they are assigned,β the report found.
The Marine Corps saw the most reports at Camp Lejeune, N.C., with 514 -- 351 male and 163 female victims. Camp Pendleton in California had the second-most: 465, with 306 men and 159 women.
In Germany a comparable study doesn't exist, but 8 years ago serious allegations lead to a report and an investigation about sexual harrasement, rituals and bullying on the Fork Gorch.
