But what are some other words I should know. What is the virus being called in China? What is the word for quarantine and other things?

[Boston Globe] A glossary of "Eck-isms."

Which one is your favourite?

... I think we need to add the Masterson family to the list.

-------------------------

https://www.boston.com/sports/boston-red-sox/2018/08/30/what-the-heck-is-the-eck-talking-about

β€œPUNCHOUT’’

Ecksplanation: A strikeout. If Eckersley has ever called a strikeout anything but a punchout, I missed it.

Proper use in a sentence: β€œSale has 12 punchouts on just 68 pitches.’’

β€œCHEESE’’

Ecksplanation: A blazing fastball.

Proper use in a sentence: β€œKimbrel blew away Stanton there with the high cheese.’’ (β€œHigh’’ signifying the pitch location.) Note: Occasionally, Eckersley will be specific about the kind of cheese, calling it β€œcheddar.’’

β€œEDUCATED CHEESE’’

Ecksplanation: A well-located fastball.

Proper use in a sentence: β€œMan, OB, that was some educated cheese there by Price. Ninety-four miles per hour, right on the black.’’

β€œEASY CHEESE’’

Ecksplanation: An effortless fastball.

Proper use in a sentence: β€œLet me tell you, back in my day, no one had easy cheese like Gossage.’’

β€œGAS’’

Ecksplanation: Basically the same thing as cheese, though used more often in reference to a pitch’s velocity.

Proper use in a sentence: β€œEovaldi was throwing gas from jump street.’’

β€œJUMP STREET’’

Definition: The beginning of a game or the start of a player’s performance in a game.

Proper use in a sentence: β€œFrom jump street tonight, Kimbrel just couldn’t find the strike zone with his slider.’’

β€œSALAD’’

Ecksplanation: A finesse pitcher’s repertoire, or anti-cheese.

Proper use in a sentence: β€œHapp was hammering the strike zone with salad all night.’’

β€œEDUCATED SALAD’’

Ecksplanation: A veteran finesse pitcher’s repertoire. He may not have great stuff, but he has learned to work, and often succeed, with what he has.

Proper use in a sentence: β€œWhen he was young, Colon used to throw gas, but now he’s trying to get by with educated salad.’’

β€œPAINT’’

Ecksplanation: A pitcher’s ability to consistently hit the edges of the strike zone. Few pitchers ever have painted like Eck himself, who in 1990 walked just four batters (one intentional) in 73β…“ innings.

Proper use in a sentence: β€œWhen Sale paints the black with his slider like that, I don’t know why the hitter even bothers stepping in the batter’s box.’’

Glossary of Notes to Increase Lifts: The Deadlift

In case anybody gives a fuck, here’s a couple of tricks that I have learned over the years to increase your deadlift:

β€œThe Deadlift: 20% Physical and Programming, 10% Mental, 70% Technical” - Dave Tate, EliteFTS

Assistance Exercises to Improve Deadlift:

  • GHD Back Extensions (posterior chain development with heavy emphasis on lower back and hamstrings to improve hip extension and core bracing throughout entire movement)
  • The β€œBro Pulls” aka Barbell Rows and Pull-ups (develops the grip, biceps, lats which all help maintain structural integrity and power output during the deadlift)
  • Single-Leg Dumbbell Deadlifts (develops obliques, deep muscles around lower back and upper hamstrings, to increase core stabilization and balance/stability throughout the pull)
  • Pulls from a Deficit (develops the ability to brace the core, and generate more power output when pulling from from the floor aka making it harder so the β€œreal thing” is easier)
  • Rack Pulls (Develops the lats, grip, Rhomboids, and traps without the CNS fatigue of pulling from the floor.. strengthens the pull from the knee to full lockout)
  • Hip Thrusts (develops the glutes and hamstrings to fire and exert maximal hip Extension power output without loading the spine/ develop CNS fatigue, training maximal strength through extension of the hip)
  • experiment with different grips and stances to emphasize different muscles more (ie. heels touching, with feet pointed in a β€œV” shape, with a snatch grip for increased trap and lat development))
  • Stiff-Legged Deadlifts (hypertrophy of hamstrings, glutes, core, lats and traps for a faster, more stable pull and increased power output throughout the entire movement)
  • Thoracic-Extension Mobility Exercises (poor thoracic Extension is the hidden secret of many a’failed squats and deadlifts)
  • Hip and Hamstring Mobility (better positioning, more stability, better power output, better lifts)
  • Ankle Mobility (see above)

Mental Cues of the Deadlift:

The key to a stronger deadlift is a combination of strength, positioning, and speed. You want to initiate the deadlift by first setting your stance. A solid and common stance for the conventional deadlift is to stand with feet hip-width apart, the bar directly over your mid-foot, and toes pointing forward. Then, you want to bend over and grab the bar with a shoulder-width grip, while bending the knees until your shins touch the bar. Now that your grip and stance is set, with the bar resting against your shins, you

A section of the glossary regarding specific variants of dungeon runs

What's a strat orb run? What about a raid leader advertising a raid with +1 reset or hard res [Sulfuron Ingot]?

If you're returning to vanilla after a long time, or just dipping your toes in, you might find chat a bit confusing. So, we got together and compiled a short list of commonly used terms, acronyms and abbreviations expected to be used in Classic.

It briefly explains things like variants of dungeon runs, raid organisation terminology and confusing warlock specs. We tried to avoid the most obvious like 'LFM and LFG' since these are pretty well-known already.

If you have something you'd like to add to the glossary that you think people should know about just leave a comment here or on the thread :)

A humble glossary of mistreated terminologies

Lately, I've been involved with more early-stage startups and first-time founders. I find that the industry has been plagued with many concepts without most people taking the time to fully understand the underlying philosophy behind each of these concepts.

I thought that maybe it would be nice to share a few definitions, and what they really mean. Feel free to add yours.

Startup: A corporation created for the purpose of finding a scalable business model.

You are not a startup if you are growing fast through a proven value proposition (you are a scale-up, and soon to be a regular business).

You are not a startup if you are a design consultancy unless you can scale without adding human resources at a proportional rate.

A startup is not a culture, nor is it an "early-stage company". The word finds his true meaning within the scope of a business created for the sole purpose of finding a scalable business model (and thus, validate a market hypothesis). That's why many startup pivots.

MVP (Minimum Viable Product): A data-driven approach to testing a market hypothesis as fast as possible.

You are building an MVP for the sole purpose of proving to yourself, and potential investors, that there is indeed a market for your product. If your code is good enough to allow you to scale with it, it's most probably not an MVP. If your code is good enough to handle all kinds of usage or behaviors (edge-cases) it's probably not an MVP.

An MVP is a radical approach that trades long-term efficiency (scalability) for short-term results (data). It's focused around a very specific use-case/need and tries to prove that people need this enough that they will either pay for it or forgive many missing parts of a more complete / fully-featured solution.

Needless to say, an MVP should be released with sufficient tracking technologies in order to in/validate things with accuracy and do the necessary changes.

Agile: An iterative methodology favoring single-feature implementation over feature set deliveries

Being an Agile team is not about being reactive and adaptable. Any good team is.

It's about having a strict working process which favors short iterations and fast code-to-market development cycles. It's a real engineering process and one cannot just decide that his team is agile because he deems so nor because they share the values of the Agile Manifesto nor so they can avoid documenting their code in favor of speed.

As

Glossary of Terms for Inca Language

Hey all, found a website attempting to define Incan' terms like a dictionary full of potential gold. I found some of these terms useful for understanding allot of ideas, terminology, and symbols usually limited to "spirituality" as a mystery. It's fascinating to get a peek at a language and culture designed around spiritual development. I would call it the fundamental basics of human psychology.

Small example of what a language might produce when reality and "spirituality" are considered the same;

>Pachamama, Pacha Mama: (n) (1) Mother Earth, Gaia; both the physical planet and the goddess archetype. Universal feminine energy in time and space; cosmic mother.

Not much different, if at all, than Yin and Yang or similar Eastern concepts but in "plain" language.

>The Pachamama is the point where time and space meet. The past, the present and the
future are born from her and all return to her. She is the universal and eternal matrix.
The apus, the ancestors, and the various spirits are all born from her, controlled by her,
and protected by her. . . . Man, too, with his family and all his possessions . . . is born
from her, nurtured and raised by her, and finally drawn back within her when he dies.

I also like how the originator of the site is mostly following his own curiosities. He is very humble in making it clear his understandings may need refinement and he seems to have really applied himself in doing so.

Glossary of terms you should know regarding Wayfarer and related topics

This is intended for people who are brand new to Wayfarer and have experience with only 1 or 2 of Niantic's games. It focuses heavily on Ingress terms as many new reviewers come from Pokemon Go and will be unfamiliar with Ingress terms.

S2 Map Grid

The S2 Map grid is a tool used to map out the entire world in a grid. It has cells from size 1 (largest) to 30 (smallest). Each level of cell contains 4 of the next smallest cell. It is used extensively by Niantic for a variety of purposes. <https://s2.sidewalklabs.com/regioncoverer/> The two most well known (for Pokemon Go) are Level 17 (L17) & Level 14 (L14). 6, 8, 10 and possibly others are used as well.

Forbidden Terms Niantic has indicated that any candidate whose title or description references a particular game should be rejected. Keep in mind that there are times when these terms are acceptable if they are accurate descriptions of what the candidate is. Such terms include but are not limited to: Enlightened, Resistance, XM, portal, pokestop, gym, Mystic, Instinct, Valor, Wizard, trainer, agent, *-gress (bikegress, hikegress, cargress, etc), pokemon, pokemon go, any pokemon name

Redacted / Prime Redacted is the name for the old version of the Ingress app which was retired September 30th, 2019. Prime is the current version, formally titled Ingress Prime.

Key / Portal Key An item used in Ingress gameplay, acquired by interacting with a portal. Each key is specific to a portal and can be used to interact with that portal remotely in various ways. Somewhat similar to Gifts in other games but cannot be sent to other players.

Scanner When used in the context of Ingress, it is the formal name of the Ingress Game/App. Otherwise typically refers to tools used to gather game data via automation from any of the Niantic games.

A glossary of crypto terms Timothy May sent to the Cypherpunks mailing list, 27 years ago today

From: tcmay@netcom.com (Timothy C. May)
Subject: Crypto Glossary
Date: Sun, 22 Nov 92 11:50:55 PST

Here's the glossary of crypto terms we passed out in printed form at the first Cypherpunks meeting in September 1992. Some compromises had to be made in going from the printed form to the ASCII of this transmission, so I hope you'll bear with me.

I'm sending it to the entire list because nearly everyone who hears about it says "Is it online?" and wants a copy. If you don't want it, discard it.

I'm not going to be maintaining the "Cypherpunks FAQ," so don't send me corrections or additions.

Enjoy

Major Branches of Cryptology (as we see it)

(these sections will introduce the terms in context, though complete definitions will not be given)

Encryption

privacy of messages
using ciphers and codes to protect the secrecy of messages
DES is the most common symmetric cipher (same key for encryption and decryption)
RSA is the most common asymmetric cipher (different keys for encryption and decryption)

Signatures and Authentication

proving who you are
proving you signed a document (and not someone else)

Untraceable Mail

untraceable sending and receiving of mail and messages
focus: defeating eavesdroppers and traffic analysis
DC protocol (dining cryptographers)

Cryptographic Voting

focus: ballot box anonymity
credentials for voting
issues of double voting, security, robustness, efficiency

Digital Cash

focus: privacy in transactions, purchases
unlinkable credentials
blinded notes
"digital coins" may not be possible

Crypto Anarchy

using the above to evade government, to bypass tax collection, etc.
a technological solution to the problem of too much government

Glossary

agoric systems

open, free market systems in which voluntary transactions are central.

Alice and Bob

cryptographic protocols are often made clearer by considering parties A and B, or Alice and Bob, performing some protocol. Eve the eavesdropper, Paul the prover, and Vic the verifier are other common stand-in names.

ANDOS

all or nothing disclosure of secrets.

anonymous credential

a credential which asserts some right or privilege or fact without revealing the identity of the holder. This is unlike CA driver's licenses.

asymmetric cipher

same as public key cryptosystem.

authentication

the process of verifying an identity or credential, to ensure you are who you said you were.

Include a glossary of terms, and where?

So, this is my first paranormal/fantasy romance series and I originally wrote a glossary of terms to go with it. This book introduces a lot of races and beings and even though I explain them all in the book when they come up, I thought I'd make a glossary so people can look back if they need to.

There are normal things like vampires, shifters, were-animals, and angels. But there are also demons (kinds and a hierarchy that I've created) that are heavily incorporated throughout this book since it's set in Hell. So my question is... do I include the glossary? and where do I put it if I do? (both ebook and paperback will be released).

Does anyone know of a Encyclopaedia/Glossary of Gay slang/terms that’s are commonly know and used by all you more experienced guys?

I’m 17, young and I’ve only just began figuring out my sexuality and am only now exploring Gay culture. I’ve learnt a lot of phrases and terms and I’m comfortable with using them... e.g Iearnt I am something called a cub... but I still hear words which I can’t workout using context, I fear there are many slang words I do not know. Idk I just need something from you more experienced guys, I’m extremely inexperienced tbh, anything would help, thank you!

I decided to try Sudoku for the first time this week to help time go by. Been learning a lot though I'm stuck on this one. Learned about empty rectangles to help get some locked candidates but now I'm not sure of there is a logic I have't learned yet or I'm missing something obvious.

Something i made for fun after first semester of computer science. Using eclipse window builder to make Sudoku, with backtracking solving algorithm

https://imgur.com/uF45omT

We are required to use window builder (swing) for GUI even though it's pretty much becoming obsolete.. Even our teacher agrees it's pretty crap lol. Anyway, this was pretty fun to make, and easy to build upon with more features should i want to, so i found it was a really good practice project. I might add more solving algorithms, use the solved board to provide hints that a certain square is incorrect, add a timer and highscores, make you able to create a board straight from a picture instead of manually etc.

Question about the Wheel of Time and Glossaries

I've been listening to the Wheel of Time on and off on audible and I'm loving it (halfway through book 9). The only problem is, I can't seem to keep up with the seemingly dozens of Aes Sedai, Shaun Chen terms, and Atha-on Myeir (another downside to listening to the books is I haven't the first clue how anything is spelled). There are so many names and terms whizzing by that I can't seem to remember all of them.

My question is: is there some kind of online glossary that I can look up brief descriptions of characters and names, that is book-specific? The problem with googling anything is that I always get spoiled because everything I read is as of the last book. Do you guys have any recommendations on what I can do? Thanks!

Is there a glossary of all the growing jargon somewhere?

Or a set of instructions from start to finish that is either free of jargon or clearly explains all of it? I keep running into things where everything is super clear right up until they assume I know some niche term and then I feel like a dummy again.

Glossary of Notes to Increase Lifts: The Olympic Lifts

In case anybody gives a fuck, here’s a couple of tricks that I have learned over the years to increase your technique, efficiency, and numbers in the Olympic Lifts:

Assistance Exercises to Improve Olympic Lifts:

  • Pulls From a Deficit (develops the ability to brace the core, and generate more power output when pulling from from the floor aka making it harder so the β€œreal thing” is easier)
  • Pulls From the Blocks (Develops the lats, grip, Rhomboids, and traps without the CNS fatigue of pulling from the floor.. strengthens the transition from first-second pull, and the complete second pull)
  • Pulls From the Hang Position (Develops the ability to generate inertia through the second pull without the momentum transfer from the first pull/from the floor.. strengthens the transition between the first and second pull without the CNS fatigue of pulling from the floor)
  • Pendlay Rows (develops the grip, biceps, lats, and core strength, which all help increase the strength in all three pulls, also improves technique and positioning, the ability to β€œkeep the bar close”)
  • Overhead Squats (mimics the bottom of a Snatch, develops ability to sit in the bottom after receiving the bar, improve core strength and stability in the bottom of a snatch, and increase power output for when driving from bottom to full lockout)
  • Front Squats (mimics the bottoms of a Clean, develops quad and core strength, and increase power output for when driving from bottom to full lockout)
  • Jerks from the Blocks (develops proficiency-through-practice of the jerk, without having to clean from the floor, can also drop the bar from lockout back onto the blocks without doing a β€œnegative”, which unnecessarily fatigues the shoulders)
  • Barbell Overhead Press (develops the anterior and medial delts, triceps, and grip for maximal power output and lockout strength in the jerk by training a similar but much weaker movement/ form of press).
  • experiment with different grips and stances to emphasize different muscles more (ie. heels touching, with feet pointed in a β€œV” shape, with a snatch grip for increased trap and lat development)
  • Core Strength exercises.. eg. GHD back extensions, Planks, Oblique Exercises (a weak core is the cause of many a’failed Overhead Presses, aside from inability to retract the scapulas correct, as well as chest/lat mobility)
  • Scapular-Retraction exercises (Eg. Slow-Tempo Rear-Delt Flies with a resistance band, Face Pulls, and Crossover Symmetry - Develops scapular healt
