"The pathogenesis of functional GI disorders (FGIDs) is uncertain. However, underlying immune activation and psychological distress has been documented in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional dyspepsia (FD). Epidemiological data from the UK suggest that FGIDs are linked to atopy and certain autoimmune diseases but this has not been confirmed.
Aim: To test if allergic or autoimmune diseases are independently associated with FGIDs, irrespective of psychological distress in a large population based study. Methods: A total of 3542 people (mean age 57.9Β years and 52.7% females) randomly selected from the Australian population, returned a mail survey (response rateΒ =Β 43%). The survey asked about a physician diagnosis of autoimmune disease (scleroderma, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes mellitus) or allergic conditions (asthma, food, pollen and/or animal allergy). The questionnaire assessed psychological distress and Rome III criteria for FD and IBS. Results: Asthma, food, pollen and animal allergies, psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis were univariately significantly associated with IBS and FD. Food allergy (ORΒ =Β 1.66; 95% CIΒ =Β 1.15β2.40, PΒ =Β 0.007), psoriasis (ORΒ =Β 1.81; 95% CIΒ =Β 1.19β2.74, PΒ =Β 0.006) and rheumatoid arthritis (ORΒ =Β 1.68; 95% CIΒ =Β 1.15β2.4, PΒ =Β 0.007) were independent risk factors for IBS, controlling for age, gender and psychological distress. In FD, asthma (ORΒ =Β 1.32; 95% CIΒ =Β 1.04β1.68, PΒ =Β 0.025) and food allergy (ORΒ =Β 1.78; 95% CIΒ =Β 1.28β2.49, PΒ =Β 0.001) were independent predictors, controlling for age, sex and psychological distress.
Conclusions: There is evidence that both atopic and autoimmune diseases are risk factors for FGIDs, independent of psychological distress, differing in IBS and FD. This provides evidence that different peripheral pathways may be involved in the pathogenesis of certain FGIDs."

I know the huge source of comfort and support a pet dog can provide when struggling with our mental health but how does our psychological functioning affect our dogs? I'm looking into this for my MSc, if you're also interested and a dog owner over the age of 18, and want to be part of some new and interesting research I'd really appreciate it if you fill in my questionnaire:
It's entirely anonymous. There's an email address if you want more info or want to know your results. Thanks so much if you decide to do it!

Hi everyone! I'm completing a master's thesis investigating psychological functioning and how it impacts sleep quality. I am looking for adult participants to take my survey. Please let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to answer them!
You are invited to take part in an online study assessing psychological functioning and its relationship to sleep quality. You will answer questions about your sleep habits and current psychological functioning, as well as some demographic information. The study should take less than 15 minutes to complete. I like trying to understand religion from a scientific perspective, which to me is more about translating inherited insights into human nature into a method of knowledge production where you can show your work, than it is about using science to dismiss huge swaths of the universal human experience.
Prayer is a tricky phenomenon to understand this way, because often it seems that there is a large gap between how prayer is taught and how prayer is used. The way that a lot of lay people seem to think of the nature of prayer is as a way of influencing the causal laws of the Universe, usually in their favor or in the favor of those they pray for. But my understanding is that this is not what prayer is understood to be/do in more theologically sophisticated circles. Pascal has this great line, βGod instituted prayer to communicate to creatures the dignity of causality.β Which seems to me that part of the intent of the method of prayer is to frustrate naive attempts to alter reality and lead one on into a mature understanding of their own agency in relation to the laws of the Universe. Alan Watts provided a sort of similar analysis of the function of Zen meditation, being to ultimately frustrate the one attempting to achieve inner peace. But all of this only deals with one aspect of what prayer ultimately is, and how it conditions us.
I was driving through the snow yesterday, and saw an accident on the side of the road. It moved me to see that, and to empathize with the tragedy of someone wrecking while probably on their way to visit their loved ones for Christmas. Then I had an insight; this is why you are "supposed" to pray for people when you see them in this plight. It isn't that prayer will effect the outcome, you do it to keep yourself from becoming the kind of person who can drive past that and feel nothing. And it is very, very easy in a tragic world full of evil to become that person. We need methods to keep our hearts from hardening as a defense against the blind tragedy and cruelty of existence.
I've had a similar insight before regarding saying grace before a meal. Why do we do it? It's more for us than it is for God or Gods. We do it to keep from becoming unconscious, ungrateful consumers. We do it to keep our food salient and full of meaning. We do it to remind ourselves of our vital connection to the soil and the farmers and the animals who gave their lives to nourish us, because if we don't keep the awareness of those connections alive, we de

My study seeks to investigate how psychological stressors related to sexual orientation might potentially impact performance on neuropsychological tests of memory and executive functioning. To be eligible for this study, you must be over the age of 18, self-identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual, and have never had a history of head trauma that led to loss of consciousness. For anyone who falls outside of the LGB category, I am sorry if this seems exclusive and not fully representative, but due to COVID and new time constraints I have had to narrow the scope of my study for logistics sake.
If you decide to participate, you will be asked to answer three short questionnaires (sent and returned via email) and then take a series of short neuropsychological tests through a private, secure Zoom meeting. The whole process should take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours depending on the individual.
Participation in this study is completely voluntary and confidential, and participants reserve the right to withdraw from this study at any time with no repercussions. If you or anyone you know is eligible and willing to participate, or if you have any questions at all, please feel free to reach out to me via email at has4a@mtmail.mtsu.edu. I will not be able to reply via comments due to confidentiality reasons. Thank you for your time!
