My neighbors use some very strange grammar. First person with an -s suffix, and object pronouns in subject position. How common is this among native English speakers?

It's the mother, the brother and the sister. They are all over the age of 40 - Australians descended from Irish convicts. For example, "I runs to the shop" from the brother, "Him goes shopping" from the sister. They will speak more correctly in formal situations. I have relatives who have passive knowledge of aboriginal languages (namely Ngaliwurru) and they said it's a common way of phrasing in informal situations.

I'm wondering if this is an isolated incident or part of a more broad pattern.

Everyone should immediately stop adding unnecessary apostrophes in acronym plurality in the name of upholding the English language. It’ll make your lives even easier and accepting the incorrect way of writing makes people who make the extra effort to use perfect grammar look like idiots.

Oh, how it bugs me when people do the following: ahem Entitled Kids = EK’s

Catch that? WHY is AN apostrophe ADDED to THE end OF the ABBREVIATED word TO signify A plural WHEN it ISN’T for THE original TERM.

The Washington State University mentions source that it is technically grammatically incorrect. It should be β€˜CDs’ or β€˜EKs.’ β€˜How old is he? Oh, he’s in his 50s.’ What do you even mean by β€˜he’s in his 50’s?’ Huh? What belongs to 50? He’s in 50’s sandcastle? He’s in 50’s brand-new hotel? Nope (unless you’re insane).

It’s mentioned that the informality of saying β€˜EP’s’ has become so common that it’s acceptable but I believe we need to enforce the rules of American/English and stop this virus from spreading. It pisses me off so much each time I see it and each one of you should do the absolute most to honor the fact you’re literate by using proper english. I know it’s habitual at this point and most wont change but please, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, write properly.

Ok so that was my first ever lengthy reddit post and it’s pretty exhausting so I’m just going to leave it at that. I apologize for any redundancies and for the use of β€˜β€™ when I should have use β€œβ€ to avoid vague double quotes of the same symbol. I already know someone reading the post is going to be so frustrated by my Grammar Nazi-ism (believe me I normally don’t care about proper grammar but this is more than a typo/mistake/laziness; this is intentional) and will try to give me a taste of my own medicine.

Oh here’s a quick bonus: It’s not class’s It’s class’

Yikes. I’m gonna be unpopular in this subreddit.

I love hearing the sound bites inherent in the church. β€œIn the name of THY son” ...at the end of a testimony, β€œThe prophet, EVEN russel,” incorrect use of Middle English grammar...

It immediately lets me know who doesn’t do their own thinking and simply regurgitates what they hear. I make sure to drop lots of little clues around them to (hopefully) cause a mental breakdown when the cognitive dissonance catches up. At the very least, for some reason they feel β€œthe spirit” go away for a while and don’t know what they’re doing wrong.

Recently, I've been enjoying reading articles written in Chinese about English grammar, like this one - it's useful to find ways to say things in Chinese. Does anyone else do this, and do you have any recommendations for websites with a good backlog of them to go through?

Discussion: Words like 苦手 and γŠδΈ–θΎž have a nuance much different than their straightforward English dictionary translation (bad at; flattery/compliment). What words or grammar did *you* use with the wrong nuance starting out?

They say learning is making mistakes so let's hear yours. Or just share some things to be cautious of that you see other learners getting tripped up on.

Another example is there was about a week where I used どうでもいい because I thought it was the same as 何でもいい (the first has kind of a fed up nuance), and there was also a day or two when I thought とにかく could be used like the English "anyway" to just change topics willy-nilly (γγ†γ„γˆγ° and てか are a bit closer to that).

And for those wondering, θ‹¦ζ‰‹οΌˆγ«γŒγ¦οΌ‰shows you are not only bad at something but you also don't like it. γŠδΈ–θΎžοΌˆγŠγ›γ˜οΌ‰ cannot be used in a "thanks for the compliment" or "that dress is flattering" or "she was flattered by all the attention she received" way. It has the nuance of being a lie or "mere flattery".

Whenever someone uses poor grammar or mispronounces a word, you can summon a very angry, completely invulnerable English teacher in the upper atmosphere who will relent at nothing to punish the person for their poor grammar.

Only one english teacher can exist at a time. Punishments usually consist of anything that would be used in the school the victim went to as a child. Whenever they have finished scolding, the English teacher turns into bees and dissipates. The bees are also invincible, and can spell things with perfect accuracy.

Don't understand basic English grammar? Then never use "it's". You can always use "it is" in scenarios where "it's" would make sense; otherwise "its" is correct.

This also works with "you are".
