Grand Duchy of Maryland

The Grand Duchy of Maryland was formed on 16 April, 1787. Maryland and Virginia were loyalist strongholds in the Revolutionary War, and when the war ended later in 1785, the entire south, who was ITTL very loyal, angry. Maryland and the south wanted monarchies, and before a constitutional convention, Maryland, and the southern states began to rebel. The British decided to strike on the United States of New England, and they annexed the remaining areas of The US. Carolina and Georgia requested to become monarchical puppets, or dominions, of Britain, although Virginia and Maryland opted for their own monarchies. The House of Calvert was proclaimed, and Frederick Calvert was declared His Grace, the Count of the County of Maryland. After the War of Southern Secession, Maryland got its claimed land, and the United States were dissolved and partitioned by the UK. In the following years, Maryland began to develop, and the area around the capital of Baltimore began to grow and develop. Although slower than Virginia, Maryland began to grow rich, although keeping with its conservative values. Maryland and Virginia became very good friends and throughout history, Maryland was neutral. Maryland began to experience a major influx of Italian migrants, and Italian culture began to integrate itself into the national culture. All national messages and broadcasts and sent out in both English and Italian. Maryland although, its neutrality, were heavily allied Italy and England and helped them throughout history. Currently, the largest city is Baltimore, although Somerset, Bedford, Breezewood, and Countess Giuliana are closely behind. Currently, the sovereign is Thomas VII, or Thomas the Fair of Bedford. In 1871, the House of Burgesses passed a major act which declared Maryland as a Grand Duchy, and not a County, anymore. Along with Virginia, Maryland is a very rich country, with castles, chateaus, resorts, less regulations, conservative values, and a prosperous economy. Currently, Maryland is of a multi party system, with the major parties being: Conservative (in power), Maryland Evangelical Union (opposition), Traditionalism, Libertarian Party, and the Liberal Party. Maryland, along with Virginia is very isolationist and has conservative and decentralization policies. Maryland and Virginia also uses the metric system, British English, drives on the left, and follows British customs. The capital building is called Cardinalsgrove Palace's style is Perpendicular Gothic Reviva

Finished my first 769 - 1453 world round

As the title said, I just finished my first journey from 769 to 1453.

I started as the Count of Domnonia with the House de Poher, in Brittany. In 805 I founded the Kingdom of Brittany, and in 840 thye Empire of Brittany after anexing half of Iberia.

In 1050 I founded the Empire of Hispania, and when I died my two sons became emperors, one of Brittany and the other of Hispania. Brittany Empire had Brittany, the western coast of France, Aquitaine, part of southern England and Wales, pieces of the Iberian peninsula, Pannonia, and North Africa. Hispania had part of souther England and Wales, almost the whole Iberian Peninsula, and Western Africa (except for Mali).

Then I started playing as the King of Aragon, with the House Barbenger, a vassal of the Empire of Hispania. The Kingdom of Aragon had territories in Southern England, for some reason, so I tried to defeat the scotts and annex Britain for the empire.

Then, in 1116 the Pope declared a crusade for Egypt, and I send my whole army alongside all the mercenaries I could hire to the end of the world, and defeated the egyptians. The pope granted me the Kingdom of Egypt, that became my primary title and I started to expand my domains (and the Empire of Hispania domain too).

By 1168 I had conquered the whole of eastern Africa and the whole mediterranean coast of Holy Land. Then in 1185 the Pope called a crusade for Finland and there I went. My possessed Head of the Satanist World Cult led the armies of the Lord and we defeated the northern pagans. I left the Kingdom of Egypt in the hands of my genius capable daughter (who achieved independence from Hispania soon after) and the Kingdom of Abyssinia in the hands of my uncle (who achieved independence a few years later).

I expanded the northern territories of Hispania from 1185 to 1215. Then I got bored and went to play briefly with Mali, trying to avoid it's extinction at the hands of the Empire of Hispania. Mali lost all their northern territories, but survived.

In 1219 I started playing with the Mongols, who had appeared in the far east. I conquered the whole east, uniting the Indian Ocean with the Baltic Sea. I took pieces from the hindus, the sunnis, the catholic kingdoms, and crushed the pagans between the Tengri and the Catholics.

In 1304 I lost a succession war, and the Mongol Empire was broken and fractioned in half a dozen kingdoms, so I quit.

By that time, none of the two great empires I had founded were in the hands of my original dinasty (de

Let’s discuss a very important historical event: The 717 Siege of Constantinople by the Umayyad Caliphate

I’ve always believed that one of the most important wars/battles/events in western history was the 717 siege of Constantinople by the Umayyad Caliphate.

Disclaimer: This post is in no way intended to advocate for one religion or peoples over another; simply, it’s made to discuss a key moment in history with my friends here at the history subreddit.

Everyone points to the Battle of Tours around the same time, when Charles the Hammer defeated the Muslim Caliphate in France, but it’s very likely, in my opinion, that the Muslims had reached the end of their war making capacity near the Pyrenees. Tours likely represents an end to Muslim raiding in France, not a religious battle for Europe.

The 717 siege of Constantinople, on the other hand, in my view was a potential conquest battle that could’ve changed the religious and political history of Eastern Europe.

By 717, the Caliphate had expanded from Spain to western India. Importantly, they were operating out of Damascus, only about a month’s march from the walls of Constantinople. Eastern Rome was the only centralized government in all of Europe in 717. And, therefore, the only centralized Christian society in the world. Constantinople was the self-professed arch enemy of Islam. This idea was so ingrained that the Muslim world had a name for Anatolia, where their twice annual jihads occurred: The House of War.

It was basically a religious requirement, a societal duty, for the caliphate’s warriors to take down Constantinople and its empire. And in 717, the caliphate was at its absolute prime, Romania at its absolute nadir.

Enter the siege of 717. Had Constantinople fallen, I don’t doubt it would signify the end of Rome. The caliphate would’ve moved in, taken over the impregnable walls of the city, and begin to spread to the European side of the Bosporus.

The Balkans were entirely disorganized in the 8th century. Bulgaria was around, but hardly equipped to deal with the might of the caliphate. Thus, Islam could have and most likely would have spread through the Balkans from the early 8th century. The Balkans would’ve been an extension of the levant, basically, within a couple hundred years.

And from there, who would’ve stopped the caliphate? Probably no one, other than supply lines and geography. Likely, the Alps and Bavarian woods and Pannonia plains would’ve limited further Islamic conquests into Western Europe, so perhaps not much would’ve changed there. But the Balkans and Eastern Europe would’ve cha

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Light of the North - Dev Diary #1: Map of Europe Overview

Hello everyone! Welcome to the very first developer diary for the "Light of the North" mod. It will be an alternative history mod with some fantasy elements. The main divergences from historical timeline are:

  • Vikings being a lot more successful;
  • Norman Invasion of England less successful and resulting in division of England into two kingdoms, the Anglo-Saxon one and the post-Norman one;
  • Ottomans being a lot less successful, as their invasion of Europe failed;
  • Reconquista being less successful and resulting in division of the Iberian Peninsula between the Christian kingdoms in the Northern half and the Muslim emirates in the Southern half;
  • Many nations took different paths than in historical timeline and named their countries differently;
  • Generally, Europe is a lot more shattered than in historical timeline.

Join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/YFuxhVRmp4

Let's begin the overview of the political map changes in Europe!

British Isles country setup in Light of the North!

The most changed part of the British Isles is England. It has been broken into 3 kingdoms: Wessex (the Anglo-Saxon kingdom), England and Danelaw (a Danish client state). Other changes are Wales and Meath being independent, and Norway owning the Hebrides.

Iberian Peninsula country setup in Light of the North!

The Iberian Peninsula is divided into 3 parts. Northern part is owned by 6 Christian kingdoms eager to finish the Reconquista. Southwestern part is owned by Ibermanland, a post-Viking state focused on defeating the Reconquistadors and Muslims, as well as Colonization. Southeastern part is owned by 3 Muslim emirates, still standing against the Reconquista. Their main goal is restoration of the Caliphate of Al-Andalus.

France country setup in Light of the North!

France is divided between 3 big kingdoms: Normandy (which is another post-Viking state), Lotharingia and Meridiane. There are also smaller duchies; most of them are subjects to the big kingdoms, but two, Brittany and Provence, remain independent.

[Italy country setup in Light of the N

These aren't dad jokes...

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.

Thracian Turk, very different results on 4 different websites and gedmatch. (23andme, myheritage, livingdna, familytreedna)

I have bought my DNA kit from 23andme and have uploaded it to mentioned websites hoping to discover my ancestry. Before this, I knew that I had a 1/16 Italian ancestry and 3 of my 4 grandparents were Bulgarian Turks. my results were like the following:

23andme:

61% Anatolian (Istanbul)

36.6% greek&balkan

1.5% eastern europian

MyHeritage:

37.4% west Asian

33% east European

27.6% greek & south Italian

Family Tree DNA:

49% Italian peninsula

14% Greece & Balkans

15% Magyar

15% East Slavic

5% southern Caucasus

living DNA:

24.5% East Balkans

22.3% West Russia

17.3 Northeast Europe

14.5% west Balkans

6.5% Mordovia

6.2% Pannonia

6.7% central Asia

GEDmatch:

North_Atlantic12.43

Baltic19.82

West_Med15.41

West_Asian21.4

East_Med22.05

Red_Sea0.61

South_Asian-

East_Asian1.19

Siberian3.54

Amerindian1.51

Oceanian1.26

Northeast_African-

Sub-Saharan0.78 Pct

My GEDmatch results show me that I am closest to Thracian Turks which seems very likely yet I am still really confused by the vastly different results on these websites. I think that the 23andme result is probably the one closest to the truth but I couldn't be certain about it because it doesn't seem to report anything the 1/16 Italian grand grandparent I had talked about earlier.
