The benefits of Digital Agriculture

Agriculture is the lifeblood of many emerging countries, ensuring food security and giving income and livelihoods to the world's 500 million smallholder farmer households. Food consumption will continue to rise in these developing nations as populations grow and appetites for more diversified diets grow. Smallholder farmers, on the other hand, face a slew of issues that severely limit their agricultural productivity and income potential, including a lack of knowledge about proper agronomic practices, limited access to credit and inputs, rudimentary logistics and transportation services, and poor planning and risk management. Smallholder farmers will suffer the negative consequences of prolonged global warming in the next decades, including lower yields and a higher frequency of crop and animal diseases and pests.

Smallholder farmers may benefit from digital agriculture by boosting their production and integrating into food value chains, as well as encouraging their adoption of climate-smart techniques. The development of integrated data sets combining satellite imagery, weather, and soil data, for example, is a significant step forward; service providers and development partners could use these data sets to provide farmers with more affordable credit and insurance, better early warning of crop failures, and improved farm management. This Agroplug platform's plan is exactly based on this idea, or precisely on developing these systems for their users.

Digital agriculture solutions now range from simple advice services that deliver text messages about ideal planting periods or impending insect threats to complicated, integrated systems that help farmers manage their supply chain or access financial services. These solutions often include data and content (such as agronomic assistance), an integration layer, an analytics layer, and a user-facing layer, all of which are part of a digital stack (including apps and tools). Enablers including a strong digital infrastructure, suitable government rules and policies, healthy and fully operating agricultural markets, and sufficient human resources are all supporting them.
