Ever head into Sobeys (or your local grocery store) on a Wednesday and see someone in the aisle replacing each and every item label one… label… at… a… time… Trust us – it happens (John used to work there) and it’s a lot of physical labour as you can imagine. A lot of repetitive work, which as we know is a prime opportunity for increased efficiency and automation through technology.
To back up a little, here’s what happens. Grocery stores like Sobeys and other physical retailers need to update their pricing on a pretty frequent basis. Factors such as dynamic pricing strategies, promotions, product information changes, UPC code swapping, and products moving to different shelf locations all contribute to one big labeling headache.
Not only is this tedious work, but it costs retailers A LOT of money. Your typical grocery store spends roughly $87,946 per year once you factor in label printing, printer hardware, and labour costs. Ouch.
But imagine if retailers could automate this away…
Now they can with Digital Smart Labels (DSLs) from Danavation Technologies Corporation (CNSX:DVN)!
If you couldn’t already tell, we are super bullish on this one. A good ol’ Canadian company that designs and engineers their own hardware and software in-house.
Here’s the gist before we break into why we are investing. DVN has been around for roughly two years and went public in January of 2021. DVN is a spinoff from Dana Industries which was founded in 1993. Dana Industries is a legacy business based out of Toronto that services a multitude of global retailers. Long story short, they have a long list of customers in the retail space that trust them. When some of these customers were seeking e-paper solutions for their price tags, they approached Dana Industries. DVN was born.
In a nutshell, they are a Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) company, that provides digital smart labels and software in combination with their proprietary hardware so that their customers can better manage their labeling processes.
These labels link to a centralized system which DVN calls the Basestation 2.0. This unit ties into their centralized command center, which enables the user to monitor ALL labels from a single piece of software.
With this technology, those same employees who were once manually changing out paper labels can with the touch of a button instantaneously alter all pricing, product information, or anything else that needed updating.
