Not sure if this subreddit is a completely appropriate venue for this discussion. I was playing around with this idea in my head while writing a paper.
What I had in mind was a department that encompassed the many areas relating to the US's scientific agenda.
One, education, directing (what should be) the US's scientific educational goals from early scientific literacy to high school level scientific standards programs to college and higher level scientific education with greater access to grants, research opportunities and perhaps national academies. In addition, creating a program to increase the level of scientific literacy of the population as a whole.
Two, expanding the system national laboratories.
I was looking at what other countries have already in this area, the Philippines seems interesting. So, what would US redditors or Non-US redditors like to see in an American equivalent?
This is all pipe dream stuff, so go for broke.
Edit: What existing programs or agencies do you think would be better served by integration into this new dept? Nasa? Darpa? The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy?
Edit 2: I don't claim to be an expert in any of the fields involved in this discussion, this is just an exercise to satisfy my curiosity. If I'm talking out of my ass please tell me, I want to learn.

Since the unknown is scary and magic is unknown would it be too much of a stretch to say that a lot of today's science denial and conspiracy theories stem from some peoples inability to keep up with the pace of humanity's advancements? What are your thoughts about this?
