Today, on September 3rd, President Andrzej Duda signed the controversial media bill “Lex TVN”, meaning that from 1st of January 2022, no non-EU based companies will be able to own controlling stakes in Polish media. This change affects only one business - TVN Group, owned by US-based Discovery, Inc.
News of this bill’s proposal sparked significant outrage from the US and EU countries, often citing “erosion of freedom of press” as a major danger. Poland countered these claims by saying that the law was passed due to “national security concerns”, and hinted that another major player attempted to enter its media market.
Further backlash is expected to arise, as threats of serious diplomatic action were raised several times, and a leaked transcript from the weekly Council of Ministers showed Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte losing his temper with the Polish political leadership, saying “[President Duda is] a degenerate Babushka who’s only interested in picking the fruits of our collective European labour, without diligently sowing and carefully cultivating the seeds required for said blooming”. Concerns have also appeared regarding the similarity of current Polish actions with those previously happening in Hungary.
