We are excited to announce that the 2015 Reddit Pipe Of The Year will be made by David S. Huber of DSH Pipes! As you may or may not know, he was a prizewinner at the 2013 Greater Kansas City Pipe Club's Pipe Carving Contest, so it's a real treat for us to have our next POTY made by David just for us.

David has sketched us a real winner for this year’s POTY and we couldn’t be more excited.

David designed this pipe especially for us, and we think it looks great. An album of the prototype in black sandblast with a black vulcanite stem can be found here.

Here are the approximate measurements for the pipe:

Length: 5”

Bowl height: 1 ¾”

Bowl width: 1 ½”

Chamber width: ¾”

Chamber depth: 1 ½”

Weight: Between 1.10 oz and 1.35 oz depending on the finish chosen.

These measurements are approximate as David shapes before drilling on every pipe he makes. While this allows for precision pipe making, it is important to know that there may be some slight variation from the measurements above. Allowing for these slight variations will give each of us a truly unique hand-made pipe from one of the rising stars of American Pipe Making.

Options and pricing are as follows:

Sandblast (black blast or ruby blast): $250 shipped with insurance to the USA

Smooth (gold contrast or ruby contrast): $350 shipped with insurance to the USA

I'm a science/space nerd. I know this finish is not for everyone but I've been on a wait list for a couple of years to get this. I wanted something that looked like a meteorite and was red like mars. The craggier the better.

We spent some time going back and forth about details, stem, overall shape, size etc. At one point during this process I was at the Johnson Space Center outside of Houston and I mentioned to David that I was actually in a room with rocks brought back from the moon as we were finalizing details on my pipe (such as add a matching tamper). Probably a minor detail but I was pretty geeked out.

I cannot express how happy I am with how this turned out. The wait was worth it. I took it to our pipe club BBQ and showed it off. I lot of guys saw some pics that David has posted on facebook of the process and were absolutely blown away when they were able to see it in person.

There was a certain publisher there, that David is acquainted with that has one of his tampers. That tamper was also present and we were passing our tampers and my pipe around for everyone to look at and hold. Lots of comments about how unusual and yet beautiful it is, all rightly so. They were also surprised at how light this pipe is for it's size. Of course David does great work on all of his pipes and this finish is only used for a small portion of them but this is what he is known for and I'm proud to finally be the owner of such a distinguished piece of artwork.

##Trump Train lawsuit

A lawsuit brought by Democratic staffers aboard a Biden campaign bus last year alleged in court filings that police “laughed” at their request for help when Trump supporters tried to run their bus off the road. The incident, which occurred on a Texas highway in October 2020, led to at least one vehicular accident and the cancellation of multiple Democratic campaign events in the state due to safety concerns. Then-President Trump praised his supporters in a tweet after video was posted online.

Four people aboard and accompanying the Biden bus later filed suit against drivers of the so-called “Trump Train” and against law enforcement officials who “turned a blind eye to the attack — despite pleas for help”. The plaintiffs, volunteer Eric Cervini, former State Sen. Wendy Davis, staffer David Gins, and bus driver Timothy Holloway, allege the Trump supporters committed civil conspiracy and civil assault (pdf):

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Abstract

In tumor-bearing mice, cyclic fasting or fasting-mimicking diets (FMDs) enhance the activity of antineoplastic treatments by modulating systemic metabolism and boosting antitumor immunity. Here we conducted a clinical trial to investigate the safety and biological effects of cyclic, five-day FMD in combination with standard antitumor therapies. In 101 patients, the FMD was safe, feasible, and resulted in a consistent decrease of blood glucose and growth factor concentration, thus recapitulating metabolic changes that mediate fasting/FMD anticancer effects in preclinical experiments. Integrated transcriptomic and deep-phenotyping analyses revealed that FMD profoundly reshapes anticancer immunity by inducing the contraction of peripheral blood immunosuppressive myeloid and regulatory T-cell compartments, paralleled by enhanced intratumor T-helper 1/cytotoxic responses and an enrichment of interferon-gamma and other immune signatures associated with better clinical outcomes in cancer patients. Our findings lay the foundations for phase II/III clinical trials aimed at investigating FMD antitumor efficacy in combination with standard antineoplastic treatments.
