A list of puns related to "Convict Lumber Yard"
One of my local lumber yards just got bought by a much larger company, and I'm wondering if an experience I just had is actually common practice or not.
This place exclusively has surfaced wood and it has the number of board feet chalked on each piece. I needed just a couple small pieces of walnut, and they were each marked as 5 board feet. However, they looked small to me, so I measured them, and each one measured 7 feet long, and 6-6.5 inches wide.
Now, by my math, that equals 3.5-3.8 board feet per board. They did lower it to 4 bf per piece when I asked, but today when I picked up another piece, they gave me a harder time, saying that it was common practice to charge for the wood that had been there before surfacing and cutting. (They did change it after measuring again).
Now: IS this common practice? With walnut over $10 bf here, they would have charged me over $30 more than what I actually got. This experience has left me with a really bad taste in my mouth, and I want to know if that's justified or if I need to just get over it.
EDIT: So far, the consensus seems to be that this practice isn't common, and is deceptive/shady/sketchy/etc. I've already decided that I'll be going to my other yard (where they still know me and like me) for everything; now I'm just trying to decide if I should leave a review warning others to bring their tape measures.

I'm planning on doing some home remodeling soon, building a walk-in closet, a wall matched media center, some custom cabinets and other things. I'm pretty new to long island though.
Does anyone know of any good, reliable lumber yards or shops where I could source some solid hardwood plywood? Home Depot is always an option, but long-standing quality is usually a concern with them.
Also of course a wood working guild or center I could join to gain access to some industrial grade equipment like a planer?
Is it worth any time buying some lumber and stacking it for a year? I find its so wet and twists immediately that you cant use it on projects. Anyone try it? Results?
Are there any local lumber yards aside from Boyce? I am looking for a few sheets 3/4 cabinet grade plywood. I have stopped by Boyce twice recently and they have been out of 3/4 birch both times.
Are the box stores worth checking out? Prices look high online and quality is notoriously suspect.
It was chipped.
I'm a hobbyist woodworker.
Where can I buy some walnut, cherry, maple?
Lowe's and home Depot have some poplar and oak but I'm looking to branch out into other species
Is this something I'd have to travel for?
If this isn't the place to ask, sorry. I'm just getting in to woodworking and I'm looking for lumber yards that are patient with someone new. I've googled and found local yards, but I'm hoping someone has some experience and specific recommendations.
Thanks.
Hi,
I hired a contractor that chared me lots of money and did not do the work,
I called the lumber yard and they refused to tell me if the contractor paid for the lumber.
what legal action can I take to know if my house is not going to have a lean against it?
Ran out of money and my house in open to the weather :(
I wont want another 30k payment worth of lumber
thanks for the help
This is probably a dumb question but I wasn't finding any answers from searching on google. I'm planning my materials list for my build now but am a little unsure of how buying lumber at a lumber yard typically works. I saw some things online about how to calculate total board length needed, should I be using a formula like that or should I be counting out like how many 2x6 by 10's I need. I'm curious because if boards are sold in 2 ft increments that's going to be a different number of boards needed than just adding up total board length because there will be cut offs too short to use for anything.
I'm looking to buy some lumber to build a dining room table and some other furniture for around the house but am consistently disappointed with what I'm finding at Home Depot and Lowes. Does anyone recommend a lumber yard on the Island? I'm out in Eastern Suffolk but don't mind driving anywhere if it is worth it. Thank you!
Hello all,
Trying to find a quality lumber yard in the Huntsville AL area of surrounding area. Would rather help out a local business than a big box store. Any recommendations?
Thanks!
Moving past HD. Going to a lumber yard for maple and doing research. Apparently wood comes in random width/length. What else should I know?
I get the concept of BF, but how to compute it when the piece can have a changing width? Just trust the lumber folks?
Are there any lumber yards in the area where I could get some hardwood lumber?
