Release the Hounds: Royal Navy warbuild destroyers overview
Back again but this time I'll be covering some of the Royal Navy's war-build destroyers we have yet to see added, specifically the Hunt and Battle classes as well as the ones built under the War Emergency Programme. links to my previous posts here:

Lamerton underway
In 1937 it became extremely clear to the British Admiralty that conflict was coming as well as the fact that they had nowhere near enough destroyers for trade protection.
While the construction of various small ships was already underway the escorts were considered too slow to be able to break off and pursue attackers, and the current destroyer designs were considered too big to produce in the speed and quantity needed.
As such a design for a small destroyer was requested. Because aircraft and submarines were viewed as the primary threat to merchants torpedoes were not included, with the smaller 4" gun being picked as the primary armament. Due to their role a speed of around 27 knots was considered sufficient. The ships would end up having a standard displacement between 1,000-1,100 tonnes (for comparison Mutsuki is around 1,300 at Standard).
The first group of 20 were ordered in early 1939 however they were discovered to be dangerously top heavy, leading to one of the gun mounts being removed and the addition of extra ballast.
Subsequently the second group of 36 were widened to allow them to have their original armament as well as greatly increased depth charge stowage. Due to the entry of the Italians to the war, a third group of 27 intended for the Mediterranean were ordered with one of their turrets removed to fit a twin torpedo launcher.
The final group of two were a bit of an odd case, having been built by Thornycroft to the design they had originally proposed

TIL: Sailors in the Royal Navy would receive a measure of grog (1 part rum, 2 parts water) everyday. The glasses they used were then washed on the outside, but never washed inside, in the belief that residue of past grogs would stick to the side of the glass and make the next grog even stronger!
