Aberfan Disaster 1966. An 111ft high coal mining spoil tip collapsed after heavy rain and the resulting slurry slid into the town of Aberfan, South Wales. It killed 144 people, 116 of which were children as the slurry engulfed a junior school that had just started its morning lessons.
