An estimated vocal ranking of popular K-pop groups.

First and foremost I would like to say that I am NOT a vocal coach, I’m just a student. This I created this ranking to the best of my knowledge however there may be redditors who are more knowledgeable than me.

This ranking was created as objectively as possible based purely on each idols technical skill including their use of resonance, support, pitch, projection etc. so please do not start any fan wars or take this personally. I am not 100% familiar with every idol on this list so I am open to corrections.

I would love for this to be a discussion so if you think idols should be moved or added feel free to comment or if you just want me to clarify my reasoning. I hope you enjoy.

A++: Sohyang

A+: Ailee, Kyuhyun, Hyorin, Luna

A: Taeyeon, Wendy, Chen, Ryeowook

A-: Onew, Baekhyun, D.O, Wheein, Solar, Solji, Seunghee, Yesung

B+: Seohyun, Ningning, Kihyun, Taemin, Hwasa

B: Tiffany, Sunny, Jihyo, Soyou, Winter

B-: Seulgi, Jeongyeon

C+: Nayeon, Hyojung, Rosé

C: Joy, Lia, Jungkook, V, Sihyun, Karina, Yuqi

C-: Mina, Chaeyoung, Yeji, Minnie, Jimin, Mia, Yuri, Sooyoung, Jin, Minhyuk, Key, Yooa, Miyeon, Jooheon

D+: Tzuyu, Chaeryoung

D: Hyoyeon, Irene, Yuna, Soyeon, Soojin

D-: Yoona, Yeri, Sana, Ryujin, Hyungwon

E: Dahyun, Momo

F: Onda, Yiren

N/A: Shuhua

To give you a basic reference the C tier includes idols who have some sense of support however it’s not solidly developed and therefore shallow.

Groups included in this list (not all members):

Super Junior, SNSD, Red Velvet, Aespa, Twice, Itzy, Gidle, BTS, Monsta X, Shinee, Exo, Mamamoo, Everglow, Oh My Girl, Exid, Sistar

I’m more familiar with girl groups so the boy groups will be more likely to need adjustments.

Most Like K-Pop Songs on Melon x by Soloists

Hey, last week I made this list for groups and I was asked if I could do the same for soloists so here it is. A few considerations:

  1. Soloists pop from the ground so there will be many missing, just comment whoever and I'll include them (and preferably their former group name if there's one);
  2. These number were taken in the spam of this last week -the ones I'll be adding;
  3. This list contains both debuted soloists and group members turned soloists (mostly the latter, the scale is messed up). This is a long list so if you are looking for ex/group members I recommend going down to the 90k - 10k section*,* that's where most of them are;
  4. As I was informed last time that the Melon likes system was introduced in the platform in 2015 so keep that in mind while reading as big hits from soloists prior to that won't have a number equivalent to the tracks sucess.

Analysis of China’s idol industry and some thoughts on the girls’ careers

I’ve been reading a lot of comments about China not being able to support the group or that C-trainees being better off with debut at home so I wanted to share some quick analysis of the state of c-ent and some misconceptions and potential future of these girls! I drafted this before the interim reveal but now that we see the interim results, the end conclusion is always vote your 1-pick! I’ve watched almost every girl produce series (except 48) and follow c-ent pretty closely and have been lurking here because the show has been making so little impact everywhere else.

Disclosure most the girls mentioned by me are people I’m fans of! But I may be a bit harsh. And I had voted for XZY (pick), alternated SRQ/Fuya/Wen Zhe after. Now I’m not so sure..

Misconceptions - regulations will limit the purchasing power of fanbases. Fans will find ways to support (splitting up orders, new fansites, etc) and you can’t control individual purchases either. The main crackdown has been on “behaviour” of both idols (idols with bad pasts) and fanbases (cyber-bullying, coordianted attacks). The biggest idol hits are China’s own survival shows with no yogurt/paid voting. Shows seems to struggle without the hype so if anything C-girls going back will struggle to find a platform for exposure until shows find a way. But for kpop, with just recent kpop purchases, Taeyeon, Karina bars raised $$$ (20k+ orders - aespa got like almost 100k among all the girls) and Lisa’s bar still figured out how to make their push. Same with BTS, NCT, etc. For domestic celebs (actors/male idols) fans still find ways to support endorsements. It’s things like rankings on weibo which take a hit so small idols may lose some momentum. IQIYI and Tencent may lay off the idol shows (ie Stage Boom with Yuqi/Pinky, etc is a flop without voting) further limiting domestic idol activities. People say those broadcasters use produce shows to foster their own actors which is also another reason so many go into acting.

Idoldom is still in its infancy in China. The money and longevity is in acting or a legitimate singer/variety host. Pretty much all idols go into acting. Even Meng Meiqi (PD101C, ex-Cosmic) who actually had GP recognition (and decent OST hit) splits time doing acting. And she’s a rare idol getting good music gigs with Tencent and Yuehua support. The only other example is Kun from Idol Producer but he is an male idol and even he hosted on Running Man China now for longevity that. And to get a good va

HEO Kwanghee: Lucky or late bloomer?

The 26 year old currently has a world ranking of 35 (highest of 32). I doubt he was on many people's radar until Momota's assassination at the Olympics. I like most people assumed it was just a lucky blow to the out of sorts number 1 but watching him the last few month it seems that perhaps he's worthy of a higher ranking and if he keeps this form up we could even see him in the top 10.

Outside of beating Momota, in the brief 2020 and 2021 season he's beaten Chou Tien Chen, Lee Zii Jia, Wang Tzu Wei, and taken other top 10 players like Ginting and Shi Yuqi to 3 games.

Beyond that he has an incredibly relentless energy on court, attacking non stop. Even in his losses I don't think it's ever easy for his opponents.

Yes he's also lost out recently to some lower ranked players but on the whole it seems everything is on the up. What are your thoughts? Is he perhaps just riding a temporary wave of confidence? Is it just the covid effect giving him an opening at players still waking up?

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

A Guide to Pronouncing Chinese Idols’ Names

(The advice flair works with this post I hope?)

Every time one of those "what are some idol names you don’t know how pronounce" posts comes up, I die a little inside from the sheer amount of Chinese (when I use this I’m referring to all of Greater China because it’s easier that way) idols’ names in the comments. So, here’s me attempting to teach y’all how to pronounce these names (with audio recordings!). (I mean I could’ve just done the audio recordings but that would make this post boring.) (If y’all have any requests just leave them in the comments and I’ll add them to the post.) (These are all Mandarin names because my Cantonese level is: nei5hou2.)

This post has absolutely no order and I’m just doing whatever idol comes to mind

Let’s start with the ones that confounds us all: Chou Tzuyu / 周子瑜 / Zhōu Ziyú. Taiwan uses Wade-Giles more often than Pinyin, which is why I think people get confounded by her name.

  • "Chou" is basically the name "Zoey" without the "ey" part
  • "Tzu" is like you’re saying "zzz"
  • "Yu" — say "you" but then slide so quickly into a "ee" sound that the "oo" kinda disappears
  • Voice recording

Xiao Dejun / 肖德俊 / Xiào Déjùn (aka Xiaojun)

  • "Xiao" is "she~ow"
  • "De" is like saying "duh" but with your mouth shaped into the "ehh" shape
  • "Jun" is "jween" basically
  • Voice recording

Huang Renjun / 黄仁俊 / Huáng Rénjùn how Renjun is written in Hangul (런쥔) annoys me to no end because imo 렌쥔 would make so much more sense and is closer to the actual pronunciation)

  • "Huang" is "hwang"
  • "Ren" is very confusing because the "r" sound varies quite a bit. You can say it exactly like it’s spelt — with a hard R — or like "zen" but with a a very soft "z" sound
  • "Jun" is "jween"
  • Voice recording

Song Yuqi / 宋雨琦 / Sòng Yǔqí

  • "Song" is "so + ng" NOT "song"
  • "Yu" is "yoo~ee" (see Tzuyu for more explanation)
  • "Qi" is "chee"
  • Voice recording

Zhong Chenle / 钟辰乐 / Zhōng Chénlè

  • "Zhong" is like the "jong" in Jonghyun but with the x in xylophone instead of the beginning j
  • "Chen" is a mix of "chen" and "chin" so it’s like "chihn"
  • "Le" is "luh"
  • Voice recording

Xu Minghao / 徐明浩 / Xú Mínghào (aka THE8)

  • "Xu" is like "yu" (see Tzuyu and Yuqi) but with a "sh" sound at the beginning — so "shoo~ee" sorta
  • "Ming" — exactly like how it loo

A write up on the number of groups and solo artist that debut and disband each year

This post is really really really LONG and I decided to do it because I was curious to see how many groups debut nowadays as compared to during the start of kpop.

[OC] Detailed Analysis / Write-Up of China's 2021 Olympic Performance

https://i.imgur.com/IlJTq07.jpg

Written on 8/3/21; final edit made end of 8/8/21

As someone who follows China's Olympics closely and as China’s key events wind down, I thought I'd share my analysis on China's performance. I'm going to break down China's competitive events into categories below and give my view on where they've overperformed / underperformed. Focus will be on Gold Medals as it gets too complicated to analyze Silvers and Bronzes too.

#Category 1: Sports that China Dominates

These are the sports that China expects to win close to all of the golds. Any loss of a gold medal would be considered an upset.

Diving (8 Possible Gold Medals)

Events won:

Men’s Synchronized Springboard

Women’s Synchronized Springboard

Women’s Synchronized Platform

Women’s Individual Springboard

Men’s Individual Springboard

Women’s Individual Platform

Men’s Individual Platform

Events lost:

Men’s Synchronized Platform (Silver)

Result: 7 Golds won; 1 lost

Near-miss: Men’s Synchronized Platform – China was leading up until a crucial error on the fourth dive. If they had not committed the unexpected mistake, this would have easily been China’s Gold.

Analysis: On Par. While the Silver in Men’s Synchronized Platform was a near-miss and an upset, the overall performance so far is within expectations. Many do not know that while all China’s divers are favorites, the female divers are considered “safer bets” than the males. To get challenged in the Platform events was expected on the men’s side, mainly from GB with Tom Daley. If China were to lose the last Gold in Diving, this would move to “Underperformance”. Special shoutout here to Quan Hongchan for her virtually-perfect execution to break the WR set by my favorite diver Chen Ruolin back in 2008 - at only 14 years old!

Table Tennis (5 Possible Gold Medals)

Events Won:

Men’s Singles

Women’s Singles

Women’s Team

Men’s Team

Events Lost:

Mixed Doubles (Silver)

Result: 4 Golds won; 1 lost

Analysis: On Par / Slight Underperformance. I’m reluctant to call the Mixed Doubles loss a “Near-miss” as they were thoroughly outplayed by Japan in three of the sets. I also don’t view it as a full-on “Underperformance” as many think it was, considering that Mixed Doubles was an event newly added this year and Japan ca

Which idols do you know in the groups you don’t follow?

Here’s an interesting and fun question. I’m a new fan so I can do this relatively easily but which idols in groups you don’t follow do you know the name of just because they’ve been mentioned so many times on social media threads or other convos? I only follow NCT rn so I can do it for every other popular group. I didn’t do BTS or Blackpink because they’re super popular and I can name all members without following them.

This isn’t people you can recognize just people you can name because they’re mentioned so much haha

Boy Groups

Stray Kids - Felix, Bang Chan

Ateez - Seonghwa (?), San

TXT - Huening Kai, Beomgyu (?)

Enhypen - Ni-ki, Jake (?)

Seventeen - Dino, The8, Hoshi

EXO - Kai, Baehkyun, Chen, Lay

Girl Groups

Red Velvet - Wendy, Yeri

Mamamoo - Solar, Hwasa

Twice - Jihyo, Tzuyu

(G)-IDLE - Yuqi

Everglow - Yiren

Itzy - Lia, Ryujin

aespa - Karina

Anyone who isn’t a NCTzen or a casual follower of NCT, I’d love to hear which NCT members’ names do you hear mentioned a lot without knowing anything about them?

These aren't dad jokes...

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
