Our house shows signs of subsidence. Should I have it independently surveyed before claiming on insurance, and if so is a Chartered Building Surveyor better than other surveyors, eg. Chartered Engineers?

Our house has developed some significant cracks along the front and inside, as well as having issues closing the front door and upstairs windows - all looking very much like subsidence. I'm unsure of next course of action:

Should I engage a surveyor first to look at this, or just approach our insurers directly? I started investigating surveyors and speaking to one he pointed out that an independent survey will advise what's best for us, whereas the insurers will just look at the cheapest option to stop the issue becoming worse.

If I do engage a surveyor, what type? I've been advised that I would be best with a "Chartered Building Surveyor" which is of course more expensive, and that most people calling themselves surveyors aren't training specifically in property surveying. But of course, a Chartered Building Surveyor would say that!

Any help much appreciated as you can imagine this is quite stressful! Apologies if slightly OT.

First federally chartered U.S. bank to offer full suite of crypto banking services

Vast Bank, N.A. is the first federally chartered bank in the United States to offer all customers the full suite of crypto banking services, including buying, selling, and storage of cryptocurrencies (currently Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Cardano, Algorand, Filecoin, and Orchid), straight from their FDIC-insured checking account.

For obvious reasons, this is hugely bullish for Amp/Flexa, and of course for the crypto community as a whole.

Vast Bank CEO Brad Scrivner was quoted saying, β€œmore than 60 percent of individuals [in the U.S. alone] are at least interested in crypto – what I like to describe as β€˜crypto curious.’” According to him, many of those who are β€œcrypto curious” have been waiting to seek exposure through a federally regulated, FDIC-insured entity such as a chartered national retail bank. With Vast Bank overcoming the daunting regulatory hurdles of being able to add crypto services to their retail offerings, this development is undoubtedly a milestone in crypto’s journey to becoming ubiquitous in every consumer in America’s daily life.

Amp/Flexa just happens to be situated perfectly to be an essential part of this revolution.

Only greater mass adoption from here.

AskScience AMA Series: Hi Reddit - we are group of 250 engineers, scientists, innovators, technologists, digital experts and designers with a collected 45 PhDs / Professors and 35 members representing national science or engineering institutions / charities. AUA!

TL;DR: Last week was British Science Week! We are here to answer any questions any of you have to do with science or technology and how they affect your life. There are no silly questions - ask us anything and we will try to give an easy-to-understand answer and, wherever possible, provide some further sources to enable you to do your own research/reading.

Our goal is simply to advance everyone's understanding of science, engineering and technology and to help people be better informed about the issues likely to affect them and their families.

More info / Longer read: CSES is a registered charity in the UK, founded in 1920. We're a volunteer group of over 250 members and our key strength is our diversity and interdisciplinary expertise. Our members come from a variety of educational, social and economic backgrounds, from industry and academia and a multitude of age groups, representing groups from the millennials all the way to the Silent Generation (our oldest member being 97)!

There has been growing dis-information globally in the last 20 years. Today's global interconnectedness, while being hugely beneficial for making information easily accessible to everyone, has made it ever more difficult to determine 'truth' and who to trust. As an independent charity, not affiliated or biased to any particular group, but with broad knowledge we are here to answer any questions you may have and to hopefully point you to further reading!

Our goal is simply to answer as many of your questions as we can - but we aren't able to give advice on things - sorry! We will also be clear where what we are saying is the experience-based opinion of someone in our team.

CSES will draw from its large pool of volunteers to answer your questions, however the people standing by to answer comments are:

  • Vic Leverett OBE: 40 years' engineering experience with previous director-level positions Europe's largest defence/engineering companies. Honoured by The Queen with an OBE for services to engineering and defence.
  • Professor David Humber: 30 years' experience as a researcher, lecturer and senior university manager specialising in immuno-biology and the life sciences.
  • David Whyte: Technologist and Chartered Engineer with 10 years' Research and Deployment experience and 15 international patents across a wide range of technologies.

I love how blockchain technology is and has disrupted many different industries and institutions. What are some crypto projects that are alternative to their centralized counterparts that you guys have heard of that seem promising? Preferably projects you have used. If there is more than one alternative why is one better than the other? I am trying to leave as many centralized products behind as possible

For example

Spotify = Audius

Http = ipfs (Filecoin)

Aava = Banks

VPNs = Orchid

Google Drive = ?
