Cardboard Gangsters Puns

I really love these gritty non-Hollywood Indie dramas. They’re usually, but not always, made in England, Ireland or Scotland. Just a simple premise, amazing story and subdued acting. Usually have some sort of crime element. All of these movies were fantastic (I highly recommend them if you haven’t seen them.) If anyone has recos similar to these, I would greatly appreciate it. We all know about it, we've all heard it, and maybe even talked about it. I think now though, playing as long as I have, and discussing it with a friend, I want to tackle a common critique of Back 4 Blood that's bothered me more than some of the others. I think there should be more positive talk of the game to give a more accurate depiction of how it actually is.

Anyway, this will be about the cast of B4B and why people actually sleep on them quite a bit.

"Back 4 Blood's characters are generic and boring compared to the L4D cast"

When I hear this point, it's usually from someone who has not put much time into Back 4 Blood, which is a serious problem and creates a skewed view of its characters. It's dishonest at best and I think people sometimes allow opinions like this to pass. While you are allowed to express yourself, you do once again, risk creating an inaccurate take on the product.

Anyway, to actually address this critique, the characters clearly are more than their archetypes, you can figure this out simply by putting time into the game. If you look at them as cardboard cutouts and do not put time into the game, that is precisely what you will get from it.

I can do the same thing, watch:

Bill = The grizzled old experienced veteran

Zoey = The school girl

Louis = The everyman

Francis = The gangster (biker sounded too specific)

Not fair is it? It's both a dishonest and inaccurate view of the characters. You learn more about the cast by playing the game. Maybe its more generic in terms of the combination of archetypes? Even then, I would say the cast is just as interesting and diverse.

Hoffman = The Doomsday Prepper

Karlee = Street Kid/ Edgelord

Walker = The veteran/leader (surprise! its just like bill!)

Doc = The healer, of course

Jim = Another veteran!

Mom = The parental figure

Evangelo and Holly = Both are more or less the 'kids' of the cleaners I'd say.

This isn't to say Back 4 Blood is some revolutionary piece of media, but the cast isn't all that different from L4D if you look at them at a very basic level. This is subjective, but to suggest a combination of a Doomsday prepper, a veteran, a doctor, and a street kid isn't at least somewhat interesting is kinda weird to me. This isn't the only possible combination of characters!

I always found it odd that my friend has more information regarding its characters rather than the wiki, so it's not even that the information is all that accessible without playing the game.

Jesus lads, just sitting here watching it now for the first time. Powerful stuff, touches on some very uncomfortable subjects and just feels a very familiar motif in the social aspects of it.

Also the instrumental side of things is just class, the piano/synth chords that play through the more difficult scenes is brilliant. The soundtrack in general is very good.

Side note then after reading a bit about it, your man Cosmo Jarvis that plays the main character has done an immaculate job with the accent, couldn’t believe he was English! A side note from that then, Keoghans acting in it is shite, accent is shite as well! Plus I know him to be a prick himself from personal experience.

All in all what a show! Any other new Irish movie releases I might have missed that are worth a watch?

Daniel Park:

If Daniel is your favorite character, then you are probably addicted to kpop/kdramas and get way too emotionally attached to Daniel despite him being the blandest and most inconsistent protagonist. In addition to the Jiho hate comments you bust out, you also post stuff like “OMG Daniel’s fat body looks like his big body. jUsT mAKe hIm sKiNnY aLrEaDy” and “Daniel is so incorruptible, what a pure-hearted soul”. Ah yes, attacking a group of people without trying to reason with them because they are allied with a deplorable company while also conveniently leaving out the detail that this group of people rebelled against the company to save your life -> Totally incorruptible.

Vasco (Euntae Lee):

If Vasco is your favorite character, you workout every single hour to get his physique and binge watch Athlean-X, Greg Doucette, and THENX for “muscle-building tips", but then eventually just give up and resort to the One Punch Man challenge. (which you don't even follow consistently)

Zack Lee:

If Zack is your favorite character, then you are severely addicted to shonen anime. Also, you main Little Mac in smash. You keep saying shit like “WTF JUST MAKE ZACK WIN ALREADY HE HAS NEVER WON” when your dumbass clearly didn’t read the God Dog arc, where Zack beats up Scott Kwon. Whenever Zack goes blue eyes mode and sacrifices his principles to unlock an extra couple moves, you say “LETS GIVE IT UP FOR ZACK’S REDEMPTION” when it’s clearly not a redemption arc.

Jay Hong:

If Jay is your favorite character, Vanilla is your favorite ice cream flavor, you have a matching tattoo with your ex, you order Pumpkin spice at Starbucks all the time or if it's not available you don't drink coffee, and your favorite color is cardboard. Every single time a new iPhone or new MacBook comes out, you impulsively spend your money that you got from running a twitter feed for a NGO. You also fight with other Jay stans to get top comment, explaining how great Jay is even if he is not even in the chapter. You keep hoping for his backstory, but let’s be honest: it’s probably going to be as cliche as most rich family stories.

With a population of 29 million, Nepal has a newly formed Democratic Republic since 2009. The 240-year-old Hindu Monarchy was abolished in 2008 but not before decades of civil unrest & chaos in the landlocked nation. When the King Gyanendra was in power, the rebel groups were working with fire in their bellies to free the people. However, there were also several criminal organizations that took the guise of rebel groups in order to steal, rob & commit crimes with impunity. Kidnappings was a major fundraising activity for these groups & was at an all-time high during 2006-2009. Kidnapping gangs didn’t target the rich & influential as you’d expect though, they targeted the middle class & upper middle class instead because they would not be taken as seriously by the police & would be less likely to have connections with even bigger gangsters themselves. Victims were almost always returned safely once the ransom was paid.

This crime takes place during some of the more tumultuous years in the country when crime was rampant & kidnappings were common.

Royal Oud

Received a lot of request to split this one again, so here we are. Creed Royal Oud, is one of my favorite scents from the house and perfect for all seasons but this fragrance really shines in the fall/winter months. This is pure opulence in a bottle if I had to describe it myself. Very versatile and can pretty much be worn all year and for any occasion. I would also note that this scent is a grown man's fragrance but I mean that in a good way.

Similar to Aventus, Royal Oud also has batch variances but I will say the batches of Royal Oud have actually gotten better over the years meaning these newer batches have managed to catch up in smell with my vintage bottle.
