Mechanical keyswitches closest to buckling spring

I spent a lot of time playing with various keyboards during 2020 pandemic boredom. And I learned that the two switches/designs I likeed the best were Alps/Matias switchesd and Buckling Spring Switches.

I had a chance to extensively use Cherry MX Blue, Brown and Logitech Roamer G switches.

I also used a few Cherry MX Blue clones.

I have not been a fan of ANY of the Cherry MX switches I have tried. My first exposure to Cherry MX switches was Cherry MX Black. Those kept me away from mechanical keyboards for close to 2 years, I hated them so much.

With the return to office coming up, I find myself needing to get a small mechanical keyboard I can take back and forth to the office.

For people that have experimented with all the different Cherry MX clone varieties out there, what switch do you think comes closest to the feel of a Model M. I had someone recommend box navy switches a while ago. I wanted to buy a key switch tester but I could not find one that had box switches on it.

[CA-BC] [H] Edius V4 Topre Keyboard, 1993 IBM Model M Buckling Spring, 1994 Model M122 RUBBER DOME [W] Local Cash, Paypal

Hi all,

Unfortunately I am in a tough position IRL so I need to sell off things from my collection to make ends meet.

Timestamps: https://imgur.com/a/5BYxB2F

Not looking to make any more money than what I paid for on any of these, selling for 20-50 below what I paid for on the Edius board after shipping + import fees. Prefer local handoff but am willing to work with shipping.

Item Description Availability Price
Edius V4 Topre board Really cool board I imported from Japan, keycaps are pretty unique so if you have an HHKB you can toss these on. Available $225 + Shipping
1993 IBM Model M In very good condition considering it's age, amazing to type on. If you go through my post history I have a video of me typing on it. Available $80 + Shipping
1994 IBM Model M122 Bought this off a guy locally and was surprised to find out that it was a rubber dome. It's actually pretty cool to type on, super tactile rubber domes. Just takes up too much space on my desk to use consistently. Available $80 + Shipping

Buckling spring keyboards: Are they as good as everyone says?

I recently got the Unicomp Model M keyboard after wanting to try it for a long time (I think it was their "New Model M" one), and I have to say, I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. Given the semi-legendary status of these keyboards, I was expecting something a lot more amazing than what I got. It's not bad, by any means, but it's also not as satisfying as a I thought -- the clickiness of the keyboard sounds kinda hollow, and the tactile feedback has a sort of rubbery quality to it. It's pretty much as loud as all my other clicky keyboards (which is my preference), but the sound itself is less pleasant. The plastic build-quality is also not great, but that part I already knew.

As it stands, I'm 50-50 on whether or not I want to keep this as my daily driver. Perhaps the keyboard is fine by my expectations were unreasonably high. Or perhaps it is the kind of keyboard that you need to use for a while before it grows on you.

Does anybody else feel the same way, or is this keyboard as universally loved as it seems to be?

ps: on the plus side, it's pretty comfortable to type on.

Are Membrane/Rubber Dome Model M Keycaps interchangeable with buckling spring versions?

Title. I recently purchased a Model M122 that's a rubber dome board (not intentional), got too excited and saw the price and was like damn you don't see those too often locally. Well, my eagerness worked against me and this isn't a buckling spring board sadly. It still feels good for a membrane, but not the same. Either way, the case is interchangeable (from my research), but the keycaps are in amazing shape. Was curious if I could somehow use these with another board.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!
