It's college ensemble audition time again and unfortunately, they're all requiring videos this year rather than live auditions. Previously, I used my phone camera and a terrible zoom recorder and stitched them together in Sony Vegas Pro.
Recently, I got a discounted base model blue yeti in hopes to at least get some better audio quality. I also downloaded audacity to record to and got Adobe Premiere Pro through my school for video editing.
With that being said, I have zero experience with video/audio recording/editing and would like some tips in the following:
- what settings/gain should I set my Yeti to? There are 4 symbols on the back of the mic and I have no idea what they mean.
- how close to the mic should my bell be to have a clear sound in my full register with a broad range of dynamics?
- should the mic be tilted at an angle or not even pointing in my direction? Should I be in a large, hard surfaced room, or small room with sound dampening carpet and panels?
- are there any settings I need to change in audacity to get the best quality on brass?
- Is there any way to use Vegas/Premiere to record video straight from my Android phone and audio from my yeti microphone and stitch them together, or should I stick to recording them separately in audacity and throwing them together myself?
If I could get some advice on this from my fellow trombonists, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you!

Wanted to get into listening to Jazz a bit more!
Hey bones,
My new year's resolution is to make more tangible strides in my passion. I chose the Black & Blues fanfare for its brevity to try and make it through the whole process from concept to video - so I know it's not perfect (the original stand videos have some die-hard fans for sure), but it's my first shot at it.
I'll try to take the criticism in strides too.

Anyone know about System Blue trombones? My son got this at the WGI percussion championships in Dayton, Ohio. He's looking for a large-bore trombone with an F attachment and was wondering about this model.

Hi, I'm currently teaching my first beginning trombone student, and am trying to put together a small recital for her in a month or so. We currently have a classical duet as well as a folk style trio piece to play, but I was looking for maybe one more in a more high energy modern style. Was wondering if anyone had recommendations for something rock/pop/blues (or anything just fun and a little more up-tempo)?
