What does "exasperating your kids" really look like? Great BEMA podcast to explore that question and depressurize parenting.

Mindful parenting, don't exasperate your kids.

Great conversation here about depressurizing your parenting to raise stable adults by your example as much as your active parenting.

I'm attempting to decompile their firmware. I can unzip the firmware (.hex format) with 7zip. Results:

Path = Poly2_2.05.hex
Type = IHex
Physical Size = 273685

----------
Path = Poly2_2.05
Size = 97288
Virtual Address = 0x0

I opened it up to see if I could discover what microcontroller it uses but at this point I can't go any further. Maybe tomorrow evening I can.

Experience with BEMA Discipleship / Marty Solomon?

While gathered for a family funeral a few days ago, one of the folks there suggested I take a listen to the BEMA podcast hosted by Marty Solomon.

I have never heard of this before and I've begun listening to the first few episodes.

His premise seems to be thus: we (as western Christians) have a different perspective on the bible because our patterns of thinking are different. We are interested in facts and information. But, he explains, that is not merely what scripture provides. It provides a story: it provides pictures and relational information. So while we have one perspective, the Jewish people at the time of Jesus had a different way of thinking and applying the scripture to themselves personally. It was more relational and poetic and experiential than we would understand it today.

This is a gross oversimplification (possibly even missing some key pieces) but you'd have to listen to it...

Anyway.

I've listened now to a few episodes and I have a few thoughts:

  1. While he definitely has a unique view in to, say, the Biblical narrative, (a chiasm with the splitting of things the first 3 days and the second the positive creation of all things, with both chaotic void on one side and rest on the other, as one example), his argument here is that we shouldn't be looking at creation as a narrative event, but as a poetic depiction of what happened. That is, no literal 6 day creation here (no matter what the text says).

  2. It seems as though his position relies upon reading and understanding Hebrew. If this is the case then... what do we do with everyone who cannot read Hebrew?

  3. In one of his intro shows he says something like: "If you ask a westerner, 'What is God like?' They will say 'powerful, might, sovereign, kind, etc.' But an easterner would say 'God is a mighty fortress. He is a good shepherd.'" I see somewhat what he's saying, but aren't those two basically the same things, said differently? Wouldn't both easterners and westerners affirm those truths? Even if expressed differently.

I'll probably keep listening, but (thus far) I feel like anyone who simply pays attention to scripture (in english, or any other language) would be able to see most of what he's saying.

Anyway, what says /r/reformed?
