15 others and I went canvassing around Bed-Stuy today. The consensus among the group is that almost everyone we spoke to (although the majority were not home) were Bernie supporters. I didn't hear the word Hillary from a single person whose door I knocked on. Anyone who wasn't home got a couple fliers / door hangers on their door.
That said, the app targets YOUNG registered Democrats; no one has been over the age of 35 in the system once. So our experience is likely pretty skewed.
There were Bernie signs and posters all over the neighborhood. No mention of Hillary anywhere even though I know there is strong support among the older residents in the community, and that many of them are consistent voters.
The woman who organized the canvassing has been running canvas and phonebanking events here in Brooklyn since December. She says there has been a clear shift in the past several months from mostly reaching Hillary supporters to now mostly reaching Bernie supporters. She says when they phonebank it's almost all Bernie supporters answering the phones.
I'm still having a hard time getting my hopes up about NY because of our ridiculous closed primary and how many Independents I am meeting who support Bernie. But, things are definitely looking good. There was also a 5-10k person march for Bernie in Manhattan today.
