What are the differences between working for the Big 4 and other top firms such as RSM, Grant Thornton, BDO, Crowe Horwath, etc.?

I understand the major difference will be compensation simply because the Big 4 brings in much more revenue, but...

  1. What are some differences in daily work life?

  2. Are any of the other top firms different among themselves? What makes them different?

  3. Why does the Big 4 bring in significantly more revenue vs the other firms?

  4. Is it possible to apply as an established professional to transition from a top 20-5 firm to the Big 4 mid career? Has anyone had experience in doing so? Was it difficult?

  5. As an established professional, how hard is it to move from a small to mid sized firm to the Big 4 or other top firms?

  6. Anything else that I am forgetting that you feel should be mentioned?

I ask simply because it is looking like I will end up at one of the other top firms post college. There is a chance of taking an offer at a small to mid-sized firm (about 50 employees), simply because it has sounded more appealing. However, I worry that if I do that and don't like it, I wont be able to go up if I wanted to. I think I am ruling Big 4 out post college, however I still might have a chance with one of them.
